The Official Sonar Workflow Enhancement Thread

This thread isnt for posting bugs but for posting ideas that will enhance Sonars workflow. Thank you for your contributions.

1st. I think you should be able to hit the preview buttom in the browser more than one time when auditioning sounds in the browser like you can in FL Studio or Geist.

2. It would be nice if the tabs in the multidock view were rearragable.

3. Every instrument should be able to be docked in the multi dock. Im not quite sure why some instruments cant be docked.

4. Make the undo buttom available again in the ACT controller programing section.

5. Midi notes should automatically show up in the PRV. Having to hit fit midi notes to view in the view tab is crazy.

    I'd like:

    1. Clicking on a docked tab expands it, I think clicking on it again should collapse it.
    2. If you close a docked window the dock shouldn't jump to another tab and expand it.
    3. I would like too see the Pro Channel as a Fly Out like it is in Console View instead of a tab on the Inspector.  When in the PC you can't adjust volume, pan, etc, in the inspector

I know it's been said a lot lately, but Melodyne ARA would make an ENORMOUS difference to my sometimes trying days in the studio :-)

I'll have three fingers of Glenlivet, with a little bit of pepper... and some cheese.

Process/Effects/MIDI FX should be available from the main (top of the screen) menu option 'Process'.

Yeah, I'd like either that option, or some more controls on the main pro channel module, whichever.

This has been banged on about in the past, but I'd really like an option to double click on the EQ plot and get a larger floating plot for fine tuning. Could get a bit more information on it, visible nodes with floating numbers and what have you.

Channel tools built in the console view would be sweet. I wouldve like a button for X-RaY built onto the VS-100. i know that cant happen now but its just a thought. i wonder can i assign it?

Since I'm thinking about console view...

Would be good if it would spread across two monitors more intelligently, without letting any channel appear across the split between the two monitors.

Also, I'd like some really basic navigation stuff at the top of the console view. Current time, and a clickable timeline showing markers. Once I'm mixing, I'm usually only really using the console view, so would be nice to be able to work more fully effectively in that view.

You can create a Screenset showing only Console and part of a time line so you would see the markers and measures.

I posted this in the wishlist thread, but it fits here...

    - easy Track color grouping in both console and track views (see protools)
    - sends and buss viewing. Clicking a send in track view would show the corresponding buss in the track inspector. Clicking the track sends on the console would offer the option to open a pop-up window displaying all the sends for that track.
    - Pop-up window for fx bins to edit or replace fx. Currently we have to expand the track in the track view or scroll in the console view
    - Global view window for all of the project's fx and corresponding tracks (ability to edit and replace)
    - ability to rename an instance of a fx per track
    - Pop-up larger window option for the Eq plot on pro-channel
    - drag and drop buss/sends routing, and routing view window

The ability to alt drag items in the track header to create a custom layout

The ability to set the colour of items in the track header (and envelopes that follow the colour of the item they relate to  ie. insert a send, make it green and the envelope is green)

Phase and interleave controls in the track header

    1) Better colors
    2) The narrow console view is just a tad too narrow.

    1. [Update] button in the Plugin manager that saves the currently loaded plugin menu list without all of the normal file save/warning dialog boxes popping up. After you click [Update], changes should be saved automatically and the window should close with no further interaction needed.
    2. Optional single-window plugin editor mode (ala Pro-Tools,Studio One)
    3. Standard bypass button on all Effects windows. Should function exactly like the bypass buttons in the Effects bins
    4. Better integration of Bitbridge plugins, specifically windows should look and work like other plugins windows and not stay on top. You also shouldn't need to use special keystrokes to use ACT features
    5. 'Repeat Last Export' option, should re-run the most recent export operation without opening any dialog boxes. It should also automatically select and reuse the previous selection criteria
    6. Option to use Friendly plugin names in Effects bins
    7. Indicator (eg. bold/italics) to identify if a plugin is already included in the currently loaded plugin menu.
    8. Indicator or filter to identify newly-discovered plugins after a plugin scan completes
    9. Option to follow transport Play/Stop commands for Media Browser
    10. Support for more (currently supports about 730) items in plugin menus. I like to keep some plugins under multiple sub-menu categories. For example, the same EQ plugin may be listed under the EQs, UAD & Mastering sub-menus.
    11. Ability to backup friendly plugin names or ideally the ability to retain them after a full re-scan or installation of plugin updates
    12. Auto-Expand for Narrow mode. The selected channel should automatically expand to full size when selected. Optionally, the Pro-Channel could also be opened/closed when a channel is selected
    13. Volume control on the Media Browser (ala Logic, Ableton Live)
    14. Ability to Rename a project, and have the program also rename the underlying folder when using per-project folder. Ideally, it would create a new folder and move the current project and audio files to it. It could then optionally leave the old folder (and project files)  if you want it to.

I agree, the PC also needs a better preset selection mechanism than the standard Windows file dialog box.
Now that I think about it, this is at least the third time that I've requested that a file load/save dialog box be eliminated in SONAR in this thread. Maybe CW should just go through the entire program and look for opportunities to eliminate unnecessary file dialog boxes.  ;-)

Bring back the midi tools customization options from 8.5. Smart tools do not compare to the ability to modify the tools to suit your own workflow. Have the midi notes show the note names - like C3 written on the note. Gapless audio.... counts as a workflow request.

Hey John T, it almost looks like I made this for you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPjsHkTaC5E

I'd like it if the Control bar was resizeable as well as floating. i.e. I could drag it into a taller, wider rectangle.

Of course more screensets with a library/manager for easy saving & loading of individual ss.

Ability to have a window sized independently of others while in the multidock. For example I'd like to have the big time showing at the top of the console view so I can see meters and time while working at a distance, but then not get sent to the back as soon as I click in the console.

Yeah, I've been looking at you videos with much interest. I've not really made any use of screensets to date, but then, I hadn't really thought about it like this, which is a sort of "design your own views" feature.

This has been banged on about in the past, but I'd really like an option to double click on the EQ plot and get a larger floating plot for fine tuning. Could get a bit more information on it, visible nodes with floating numbers and what have you.
