The Old Guitar Player - New! Bapu Mix

Wrote this for all the old guitar players. Guitar, strings and vocals by me. All other tracks by Band In A Box. A friend of mine did the mixing (Buddy Stephens). And it's a waltz. Don't hear many waltzes in country music anymore. Used to be a staple. All comments welcome. Thanks.

https://soundcloud.com/sp.../the-old-guitar-player    -  See post #14 for Bapu mix.

An update on the song is available. Turned the vocal down a little and a little rearranging. Hope you'll give a listen and some feedback. Thanks.

Nice song. All of the vocals seem a bit muffled to me. Maybe too much low end? Drums could be a tad more present IMO.

    Overall nice job.

A waltz! I heard that actually before I read it. I had an image of people dancing to it. Nice. People can get some pretty amazing results out of that box.

teego, thanks for listening. Someone pointed out your song about your dad to me. Really great. Sound quality is very professional.

Bapu, thanks for listening and your input. Will look into your suggestions about the song.

The Band19, yes, waltzes are a thing of the past. Don't hear them much anymore except from old guitar players. BiaB can produce some nice results. I started out doing the recording but wanted steel and fiddle for the song so I drug out BiaB and got this. Thanks for listening.

Well done!  Great performances all around.  The waltz sure does give it a classic feel, and very appropriate for the song.

Mix-wise I'm with Bapu - the vocals sound a bit phasey and/or over-compressed, mainly when there's more than one voice happening (are you singing the high backups too?  nice!).   They also seem to be ducking the drums a little much, so a little clarity there could go a long way.

Mix aside, I think it's a great tune - original.

Roy Rogers and Dale Evans would love this, as this fits right into their time in the western world. Very nice execution all the way around and a great mix. Very, very nicely done. Nice dip sound at the end!!

Yep.... they don't make country music like that anymore.

That's the kind of stuff I grew up listening to as a child. Still have a bunch of my parent's old 45's.

    Nice.

The lead vox is fine. The BGV are not clear. Kinda phasey sounding. I'd look at fixing them.

stevec, thanks for listening and your comments. A friend mixed this for me so I left it up to him to do what he wanted. We discussed the song and he was to get back with me, maybe, on another mix. The harmony was done by a friend, Mel O. Dyne. You may have heard of him. Glad you liked the song.

spacealf, yes the 'old guitar player' dies at the end. Dead as this type of music on the Billboard charts. Thanks for listening.

Steve, thanks for listening. Glad you liked the song. Yes, the steel is BiaB generated. They have what's called 'Real Tracks' now, sampled from actual musicians. Paul Franklin plays a lot of the steel that you hear from BiaB (if not all).

Also, a couple of people had mentioned the vocal sounded phasey. I think I have that solved now and a new version is on Soundcloud. The problem, Waves Vocal Rider. Took it off the track and the phasing is gone on the vocal.

Just great - you're getting good at this mastering and mixing game Chas - incidentally, the guitar in the middle reminded me of ONJ's Hopelessly Devoted to You - listen to this and you'll know what I mean:

bayoubill, your comments are the ones I dream of, like the old guitar player. Thank you! Wasn't familiar with the Blue Bonnet in San Antonio. Looked it up and it's a great honky tonk. Played in a few of them myself.

Rimshot, thanks a lot. Glad you liked the song.

Ed, I think we have a few differences but I think we have a lot of similarities as well. Either way, sounds great. Again, thanks for doing this for me.

    mike_mccue, thanks.

daryl1968, thanks for listening and your comments.

Mahavishnu, thanks so much for your wonderful comments. The steel on ONJ song does sound somewhat similar. And I love that song. She sings the hell out of that. The bass player is also awesome.

    Chas,

Great song.  Really enjoyed your performance and production.   You sound a little like Marty Robbins in a few places...

Both mixes are pretty good, Ed's may be a bit more bright/polished but nothing wrong with the original version either.  The only issue I hear is the backing vocals sound a little funky.   I thought the BGV were equally funky in both mix versions,  sounds like they are majorly pitched corrected and then muffled a bit to cover the artifacts or something..   Very minor issue as it is a small part of the song, but noticeable nonetheless.

Markno999, thanks for listening and your comments. Never been compared to Marty Robbins but that's fine, he was a great singer. I guess the BKV needs some work, You're not the first to comment on them. I played around with them and wanted a sound I obviously didn't get.

hey Chas - I listened to both versions, the bapu version is cleaner and has a more pleasing sound.

not fond of the processed vocals - I can't understand what they're saying at all.
