The Open Road

A bit of summer fun:

The Open Road

I recently got the Ra sample set and thought I'd take it out for a test ride... on the open road.

The basses, guitars and sax are real, percussion is Stylus and the rest is Ra.

Ed - you play sax?? If I knew that I didn't remember... it's really good.. Is that an electric fretless or an upright bass? It sounds great! Really nice mix...

    Btw what is Ra??

Excellent sounding mix. I really enjoyed the song. Love the bass. The sound scape was very well done.

ed - good to hear from you again! the guitars on the right seem just a mite hot (the lead early on and the acoustic). bass playing is sublime as usual. overall the balance is great and the song moves right along. you definitely have multiple gifts for musicianship, engineering and production.

Really liking the chord progressions and transitions in this Ed. Nice unexpected turns and changes with a gentle leading, nicely crafted. Instruments all sound great to me, nice interplay and turn-taking, sort of brings to mind a school of dolphins or something where different critters jump and take the lead for a while .. Bass is stellar in this, really liking that volume swell guitar too, nice touch. I could probably go on for a while .. great stuff Ed, well done.

Island music Ed?? Sounds cool! Sax & bass make this tune. Excellent composition and playing. Everything stands out on it's own in the mix. You're very creative.

    Mark - Thanks!

Dave - Yeah, I bring out the sax every once in a while. The main bass line is the upright, there's a fretless bass that comes in at 1:28 for a little while. Ra is a sample set from East West / Soundsonline - It was on sale a while back.

Tom - Thanks, yep, it starts and ends with the bass for me.

Doug - Thanks, good to know the mix translates well.

Jeff - Thanks, there's even a Chinese Erhu in there for the Beijing crowd.

Jack - Yep, I'm hear the guitar a little hot now. I've been focusing on getting a clear and open sound; have to know what parts to leave out.

Robby - Yeah, I like to jam. Thanks

Bill - I do like to come up with odd chord changes and then try to come up with a line that flows over / connects them. Great images, thanks!

Larry - I was mixing an Indian Dholak beat with a bossa nova; kind of like how that turned out, it did allow for some angular playing.

Top drawer stuff this Ed, just lovely. So relaxed and cool...bass is impeccable as usual, but there are some lovely lead guitar lines too. And sax...phew!

Bass lines on this remind me of John Giblin, another great fretless player.

    WOW

Everything sounds so luscious, some amazing harmonic phrases and a really original vibe.

Not only does the Bass sound amazing but there is a beautiful fluid quality to the whole low end of the mix.

    This is VERY clever stuff.

    notnat - wow, thanks!

James - yes, Giblin is great player, thanks much.

Jon - I do spend a lot of time try to getting the under 400Hz right, the rest pretty well falls in place then. Thanks

Kenny - "like a road that goes some place where you want to go" -- nice.

Toby - instrumentation -- any chance I get to noodle on different instruments is fine by me.

    Real nice Ed.

I'm liking the ambience on this - a hint of Breverb maybe.

Also, from a technical engineering point, the high frequencies sound well-developed. I'm liking the nice open, airy feeling to this.

Ed - This is so excellent, great feel and mix. This totally reminds me of something like Viktor Krauss' "Playground" from his Far from Enough CD. All to say that it's an excellent song. I love the feel of this song, great 'space' as I like to say. Great playing.
