"The Play" v2 (with visuals & yoyo mix)

Ok, so a few weeks back I posted a theatre themed acoustic song named "The Play", that I wrote with a friend of mine. Overall, it received positive reviews.

Here is a version that has some visuals attached. Ok, so it aint high def or anything and I do prance around like a little drama queen but it gives the song something a little extra! In the video, there is footage of the local drama group doing "Oliver Twist" over their 3 night show a week or two back.

Thanks to James Yoyo for giving it a little coat of audio goodness before we uploaded.

The Play

guitar, piano, strings (keyboard probably) and... mandolin?  dulcimer?  what is that other instrument?

this is a good song!  nice and simple.   mixed well.

I would like to hear a little bass of some kind, tho, acoustic bass maybe?  something on the low end would be nice, it's lacking there.

my only other crit is that your mouth is not 100% matching the vocals in the sound - that's a little distracting IMO.  if you can't line them up, I'd change it so that you can't tell you're not singing in sync.  otherwise it seems "amatuerish" to see it not sync'd exactly.

The song is very nice Cian.

The mix sounds a bit harsh to me on my Sennheiser HD600s. Sorry, just need to say what I hear.

Sounds great. Great voice. I thought the vocal was a little loud, too dominant.

    Thanks for all replies everybody.

Frank, thanks for comment and I like the word simple, since that is usually the best way to write songs.

Beagle, I agree the song does lack a little low end and yes the video matching isnt the best but it is what it is, the footage and scope for change was very miniumum.

Tony, brother thanks for dropping by. Im glad I am some competition to you, and likewise, at the end of the day for our own sake we all have to continuosly strive to raise the bar, and you just done that with your last track!Ill be back!!!

bapu, thanks you. No need to say sorry, the track is high end heavy maybe more so cos it lacks low end.

    Garry and Rimshot, thanks guys.

haiser, you are right but the footage is amateur as is so Im not going to split hairs over it, the guy doing the vid has redone it a few times now.

chasemcg, fair enough, I think the vocal at the end of the day is the most prominent feature of this so Im ok with it being a little over the top, wether thats the theatre style or not so be it.

This is a very nice song.  I thought the voice was a little dominant, but the lyrics are good so let them be heard.  I, too, feel the lack of some low end, but the rest of the instruments came through well.  Nice job.

    All the best,

Didn't hear v1 but all sounds good here. Poor syncing in the vid let's it down visually. If there are technical reasons why it can't be lined up better, I would have gone for a different kind of edit that makes it look deliberately so, rather than just not quite done properly if that makes sense.

    Hi, Cian,

I remember your first post of this gem, it really sounds fantastic and the video adds a another great dimension to an excellent musical production!

Your stuff is always amazing quality and your talent consistantly shines through in the songwriting vocals, and musical performances.

    Top notch work, my friend!

    Great song, Cian.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. The song did not have alot of bottom arrangement-wise, so I stayed true to what was recorded.

I will say that the YouTube transfer did make a bright mix even a bit harsh, per Ed.

Lynn, Bob, Paulo and James, thanks for stopping by and giving your comments guys. In fairness, the arrangement was centered at the higher end of the spectrum so was not easy to conjure some low end from nowhere. Fun to create, however onto the next piece!

Great job Cian and James, in this artsy vocal dominant mix!  This doesn't require much low end, IMHO, due to the timid portrayal it invokes.  Its the spooky ballad of stagefright ... all of us ponder.  IMHO, it goes further ... invoking artsy depressions ... like R.E.M.s doleful shame in "Losing My Religion" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=if-UzXIQ5vw) ... which many troubled souls eventually can identify with.

You've certainly captured that neurotic portrait of performing oneself before all ... and placing yourself in the midst of it ... both as a sympathetic observer and, ultimately, as the fearful performer.

Also this reminds me how many of us ... sooner or later ... crush-out the tender fear of performing ... to captivate our listeners at any cost.

Philip, thanks for stopping boy, always look forward to your posts. The initial theme and lyrics came from my friend, whom I'm guessing, sub consciously suffers a little from this very thing and what sparked the thought, I on the other hand don't mind at all, infact the bigger the crowd the better!

when I think of how MY vocals and melodies are progressing in a song I'm gonna post on this forum (and I swear to this) I ask myself "would Cian dig this approach to my phrasing or melody decision?" This joint, like your others, continue to inspire me brother

I think this is the first song I have heard by you (I may be wrong). I am very impressed. Great song writing, great performance, and the recording and mix is great.

    Cheers
