I remember one of the guys in Yes saying Rick showed them the paint roller thing when he first auditioned with them and they didn't quite know what to make of it.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Maybe it hurts his hands to run across the keyboard like that.

Those keyboard players are an odd bunch, aren't they? Here's K. Emerson stabbing his keyboard (starts around 1:15). Same timeframe (1971). Who came first? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xggFzkyd288 Maybe R. Wakeman just wanted a more gentle, humane treatment of his keys.

Funny bloke is Rick, his 'Grumpy Old Rock Star' books are well worth a read. Had to have a listen to 'Lay Down' after watching this, love that song, although I know it's not really representative of their output.

I have a theory that the the paint roller was Rick doing a parody of Keith and his knives.

Glascock and Barrie Barlow...one of the best rhythm sections IMO.

Dang. That's one big guitar. (Or Sir Douglas is really small). Love the ending. Trini says "Believe it or not. These guys are all from my home state of Texas". Dead silence from the audience. Then the follow-up "Isn't that amazing!".

Heh...funny you should say that..see the guy pretending to 'conduct' the band? That's David Palmer, the 2nd keyboard player/strings arranger in the band at that time. She's now 'Dee Palmer' and yep, wears a dress.
