"The Same" (Modern Rock) - First Recording in 5 Months! Mix #2 - 9-28

"The Same" (Modern Rock) - First Recording in 5 Months!

Hi, Guys,

It's been a super busy few months for me, and I haven't recorded anything new since March.  Since then, I setup a new DAW, and have been reinstalling, reauthorizing and updating all my software, plugins and VIs, and have been back up and running for a about a month.

Trying to record and mix gain is almost like starting all over!  I hope I'm able to get back into the swing of things fairly quickly.  Over the last few weeks I was able to "piece-meal" together a couple of songs working a half hour here, forty five minutes there, and so on and so forth.

This song is called "The Same", If you can spare three minutes, please give it a listen and let me know what you think.  As always, any and all helpful comments, suggestions, constructive criticism, input and ideas are welcome, and also greatly appreciated!

NOTE: Mix #2 up now, thanks to everyone for your good input, observations and advice!

After everyone's observations, for the remix, I added a touch of grit with a bitcrusher to the bass guitar, did a little bit of EQ surgery on the bass tracks, beefed up the low end on the drum bus a little bit and low-passed out some of the brightness that a few of you mentioned on the drums.

Hopefully it's sounding better, and the overall volume levels are still pretty even.  Please let me know if you think anything way out of whack!

Thanks again, folks, for your input!
Bob

dude- you're a friggin' awesome metal guitar player w/ an equally awesome voice.  love the stereo spread in this mix.  the deep E string bend-flats remind me of the last Alice In Chains album. vocals have this Ozzy meets Dokken vibe but with your own unique vocal stamp as well. harmonies are sweet and remind me a bit of Ratt. i LOVED this. great tune.  A+

I think Heavy Bob has surpassed Heavy Metal, man that is some serious downbeat.  You get that dark heavy beat but you manage to do it and still keep it musical.  Good job.

    Great stuff Bob.
As this is a test mix, I hope you don't mind me saying - the vocal seems to go out of sync/time with the backing around 2.35 and continues until the end of the song.

    Bob,

Good one, nice hook, love the guitar tone and playing, and you threw in a few Brian May harmonies.  Well done.

I might add a little bottom end to the kick.   Also a little distortion to the bass, I like how a little distortion on the bass adds some harmonics and definition.

Pretty polished for a test mix Bob! Huge sound, really powerful and wide. You've really got those backing vocals down to a fine art now, very distinctive use of harmony and effects. Heavy, but a catchy song, that's always a neat trick to carry off.

Thank you so much, man!  I really appreciate you taking time to check it out, and also your very encouraging comments.  Especially because I was very hesitant to post this, because I feel like I lost my chops after taking such a long break from recording and mixing anything.

Thank you, good sir, I greatly appreciate you checking it out, and also your input and  very kind words!

I will definitely take a closer listen to the vocals at the area that you pinpointed, most likely something might need a nudge or two.  I may have hit the vocals slightly too early coming in for the last chorus.  Many thanks for pointing it out, helpful observations like that are what make this forum such a great place!  I always find that after mixing and listening to your own songs for multiple times on end, it's easy to become "immune" to some of the little details and tweaks that need to be fixed.

    Thanks, Daryl, and best wishes!

How are you, buddy?  Hope you're doing well!

Thanks so much for checking it out and for your kind words and good input.

I'll will definitely take your advice and try giving the kick a little more "thump" for the remix.  I always bi-amp my bass through two different amps to two  separate tracks, one track setup for sub lows and low mids, and one for higher  "clackety" upper mids, neck and fret sound to make the higher notes "pop", and then blend them together to taste.  I usually use a bitcrusher to distort the upper mids track, but ended up taking it completely off on this song because most of the verses are mainly just bass and drums under the vocals.  I guess maybe I'll try adding the bitcrusher back in ever so slightly, to add a little more distortion back in.

Thanks again, Mark for your helpful input and suggestions, as I mentioned to Daryl1968 above, it's these little points of focus based on other people's input and observations that can really make a difference to increase the potential of a mix.

    Have a good one!

Hi, Ed, how are you, buddy?  Hope you had a great time fulfilling your duties at Mooch's wedding this past weekend, that must have been a lot of fun!

No worries, Ed, some overzealous antivirus/antimalware programs (and unfortunately sometimes even the almighty Google), see the Page Hit Counter on my music website, which is actually based on one of my business servers, wrongly as some sort of intrusion, because the Page Counter resides on a different server than my website does.  There is ABSOLUTELY NO MALWARE ON MY WEBSITE.

This is easily verifiable by entering www.BobOister.com at http://sitecheck.sucuri.net , which is an industry standard for checking websites for malware infections.  My website will come up as "Verified Clean and Not Blacklisted".

My website (and the page counter) is still the same as it was for over four years and still gets hundreds of visitors every week without any problems.  I'll be more than  happy to slap the song up on my SoundClick page too, if you or anyone else is still nervous or have any worries about visiting the website.  Just let me know!

Thanks again, Ed, for trying to check the song out, and for letting me know about the false warning, which I'll try to remedy soon.  I hope you'll still check the song out and let me know what you think, because your input is always invaluable to me, and I always look forward to it.

    Have a good one, buddy!

BTW, Bob, as Ed (bapu) said, going to your site via Chrome, I got a virus warning from Chrome.  I switched to Firefox and was taken directly there with no problems.  I bring this up because it might lower the number of visitors you get from Chrome users, and this song deserves a huge audience.  Other than that, please get busy and start writing your next opus.

    All the best,

Just listening now in IE Tab in Chrome.

Great song Bob as always. This is an observation, not a crit, but the guitars seem darker than your usual offerings. Not bad, just darker. Vocals are superior as I've come to expect from you.

    Lynn:

    Hey, Lynn,

Thanks for confirming my original suspicions about it possibly being an overzealous Chrome filter situation!

The funny thing is that both Firefox and Chrome use the same Google page filters, but Chrome's defaults seem to be much more critical, causing many more false alerts from ordinary things as common as Java based shopping cart systems, certain types of Flash objects, and simple page counter scripts, etc.

Either way, I just removed the "offending" Page Counter Script that was causing the False Alert in Chrome, so all should be clear for all three major browsers from here on in without any suspicious warnings.  I really do appreciate Ed bringing the Chrome situation to my attention, and also your help following up and confirming things.

I also just threw the song up on my SoundClick Page and added the link to the original post, in case it takes a few hours for Chrome to clear the warning, and just to make things more comfortable for anyone who might want to listen to the track.

Much thanks, Lynn, and I hope you have a spectacular Labor Day weekend!

    Excellent Bob.
It did seem to me though, that the last chorus went kind of out of sync or something. I couldn't tell what the offending part was.

Bob, you've heard me say it before: I love your guitar tones. Drums and bass are terrific together. Your vocals have never sounded better. What's your new DAW? Between this and the few I listened to a couple months back, I really think you're doing your best work. Great job.

NEW . . . DAW/reauthorizing/updating !  What a pain!  Something I need to do myself here soon.  WOW! . . . LOVE this piece and the chunky guitar tones. Piece really has a smooth flow and killer break at 1:19. Your vox and harmonies are stellar as usual.  GREAT song to break in the new DAW.

Getting back to recording must be like riding a bike for you --- you never forget how.  The mix sounds great, your playing and vocals are perfect, and the song is nothing but cool.
    Great stuff Bob!

That sounds great - big and powerful.  I love the sound of the bass guitar and how you have it mixed.  I agree with Tim on the last part of the song.

Sounds pretty darned good. I like how everything fits together so well. There is one one small thing I noticed. The ends of a couple of phrases sounded a touch flat at the tail end. Happens to me all the time. Now I don't hesitate to use V-Vocal on them. I V-Vocaled the heck out of the last couple of songs I posted. Can't really learn to use it until you've done it, I thought. Anyway, great stuff (yours, not mine).

    Hi Bob,

This sounds great, man!  Nice combination of heavy guitars/riffs and melodic vocal lines. Mix sounds huge and professional.

    Excellent.

    Classic Oister goodness.

Now that your album is out, will you finally let me do the drums for one of your tracks?
