The Same (new mix and vocals 10/8/14)

I just have a rough mix here of The Same. Being close to it I probably missed a bunch of things and would like any feedback, good or bad, about the track. The vocals aren't great and could be better if someone else, who can sing, sang the song. The section before the lead is supposed to have an upper harmony part but I seem to have lost my Bee Bee's signature series vice grips so I can't sing them. ;-)

The song is about the duality of man in relation to politics and religion and all that stuff. I also kept one half like the other. I use two key signatures and interchange them at different spots throughout the lead. The lead is sort of free floating so it may seem off but it's supposed to be that way.

Enjoy!

This remix has Rick, rwrenolds, on vocals. He did a very good job!!!

I hope you find a vocalist. It needs at a much stronger vocal performance.

The rest sounds good to me.

Thanks Ed. I hope I find someone as well.

Anyone willing to give it a shot? I have the melody written out so you can either sing against the piano or read it.

I really like this song and the way you arranged it.  Your guitar work is very nice.  As for the vocal, if you're willing to be flexible with the melody, I think you might be able to pull it off if you started about a third or fourth higher and sang in a higher register.  I can hear it in my head.  Best of luck with this because it deserves the best!

    Robert,

The backing track and song is really good.    No shortage of singers out there so you should be able to find one, plenty of good singers here on the Forum too.   I liked the song and guitar playing.   I could almost hear a Steve Perry'ish style vocal on this song.

One of the first songs I ever made with vocals was called "The Same" too haha.

On that note, I think the music is great. Not that big on the vocals though and would love to hear it with a singer that matches the music better. But very good tune.

Thanks for all the good words everyone! I appreciate it. Hopefully I'll get someone who can sing the track.

Here is The Same V2 with different vocals. It's more where I want them to be. I only sang them lower as it's more comfortable for my voice. Ironically, it's easier singing on key when I sing higher than I should. Though I still sing flat. This version is also V-Vocaled.

I really like it Robert. The song and the subject matter.

I'd like to take a shot at the vocals if you think my voice is right for it. Here's a link to some covers I did a while back. Very simple and crappy recordings but I think the range is there for The Same... Tell me what you think.

Always enjoy your guitar playing Robert, you have a knack for memorable riffs, the kind that make you wait for them to come back around. I'd be interested to hear this with Rick singing.

    Hi Robert!

What a nice rock mix....love the choice of tone and the solo work. If you're asking what we think I can tell you my OP on how it might be made even better....

I would load the original file back into your X3 and if you have a mastering plug-in I would start by setting it to a rock or indie rock setting and tweak for the mix from there. If you don't have a mastering plug-in, I would use what's in the pro channel. There are some decent mastering settings in the PC folder. Basically limit or light compress the entire mix. But not much. This has a few benefits, for one thing it gives you another gain stage before mastering and the light compression or limiting makes the mix slightly more aggressive.

If it were me I would take the opportunity to balance out the EQ by giving the mix a bit more mid range bite. The multiband compressor in Sonar is great for  adding bass and midrange boost while letting the rest of the mix untouched...I have a bit of an indie bent, so maybe you like the mix as it is...I tent to like a little bite and clarity with  more agressive bass. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I did not master this yet as I wanted feedback about the mix. I have a new mix of The Same with Rick, rwrenolds, singing the vocals and he did a great job with it.

Listening to the link in Guitarpima's last post sounds OK though for me personally the kick could do with some more punch.  Other than that sounds like a good tune with some interesting lyrics and some nice guitar playing.

    Robert,

Sounds much better, the backing track is clear, however, I find the vocal track hard to hear.   The vocals are good but muffled to my ear.  They need some more presence in the mix.
