The Speed of Life

My latest effort completed.  It seems like I always have about a half dozen songs in process.  Every once in awhile I seem to get one completed and it floats to the top.

Mix and other comments appreciated.

The Speed of Life - (Words and Music D. Crowley)

In a One Room Shack at the Edge of Town
A Man Lives All Alone
No Wife, No Kids, No Dogs, No Cats
No One He Can Call His Own

He Don’t Party, He Don’t Hang Out
He Likes To Stay at Home
He’s Got No Friends to Stop or Call
He Ain’t Even Got a Telephone

No Romance No Rendezvous
No He Don’t Even Try
But Then Again He Don’t Have To Worry
About Having To Say Goodbye

Chorus:
Time Flies By at The Speed of Life
People Come and Go
Don’t Drop Your Guard - Don’t Take a Chance
Remember To Just Say No
But Late at Night When He’s All Alone
He Often Wonders Why

(Lead Break)

You Can’t Miss What You Aint Got
And He Aint Got No One
Better To Keep All To Yourself
Than Have To Trust Someone

An Empty Man in an Empty Room
With an Empty Glass in Hand
Tries to Forget His Empty Life
And a World He Don’t Understand

The Speed of Life was Far Too Fast
The Silence Now Like a Stone
Too Late at Last He’s Realized
In the End He’ll Die Alone

Chorus:

Refrain:
The Speed of Life Was Far Too Fast
It’s  Far  Too  Fast
The Speed of Life Is Far Too Fast
It’s  Far  Too  Fast
The Speed of Life Is Far Too Fast
Far Too                  Fast

Thanks Herb.  Evidently you are about the only one that doesn't find it too dark.

Kind of a Roger Miller vibe :-) I like the change in to the lead break, and like the tone and performances on the guitar. And the harmonies on the chorus, very nice. Nice clear mix. Good job all the way around.

Such a sweet guitar, fun lyrics, and a very clean production. I would have like to hear a bit more emotion in the vocal. every body came together on this song, well done

Your guitar is sweet as always but this is probably my favorite vocal tune of yours. The vocal layers on the chorus were nice. Great job man!!

    Daryl,

Beautiful song.  I love the whole construct.  The mood is so effective and the smokey indigo colors of guitar are outstanding.
How did you do that rhythm guitar?  Is it 2 panned evenly with an organ pad underneath?   Whatever...it's sweet stuff as usual.

Best thing i have heard from you yet, Daryl. Drums sound terrific, and the composition is the cat's pj's. Those dual guitar line harmonies are spectacular and sublime.

I like the happy darkness of this tune. It totally works.

My only advice would be to slap a multiband on the bass, as it is totally booming somewhere between 300-500hz.

Yeah, definitely a way sweet tune, Daryl.  Not too dark for me.  Sort of an bluesy feel with a touch of New Orleans in there.  I enjoyed this very much.  Excellent guitar work as always.

Very cool intro with all that shuffling. Love the unexpected change @ 2:10 (near the end of the lead break, which is very subtle). Theirs a "complicity" between the vocals, rhythm and lead guitars during the chorus which is captivating. Excellent drum patterns. Lyrics are also notable, and describe a condition that occurs too often, I'm afraid. Mix is excellent, speakers and cans. Overall, this production is impressive. Bravo!

James -  The bass.  The bass is actually TWO bass tracks.  I recorded it twice and I liked them both so I attempted to combine the two tracks.  I will check out those frequencies on those tracks.  Thanks.

Nohow - Your ear is good.  There are two rhythm tracks, both done with a Strat, one on neck pickup, the other on the middle pickup.  They were EQ'd differently and panned right and left to bring them back to the middle.  The tracks were recorded independently and are not clones of the same track.  And yes there is an organ track used primarily as a rhythm pad.

Terry, I agree about the vocal emotion.  I just ended up having very little physical range in this tune so I couldn't really stretch the vocals without breaking them.  Good observation.

I sang for years in an Eagles type cover band, and in those days I sang all the high harmonies.  Later I was forced into lead vocal roles, and at age 27 (I will be 60 in March) my voiced changed to a much lower timbre and there is no chance in Hell of me ever singing high harmonies again, so I live with my limited range.

Thanks all.  Glad you liked the guitars.  I love doing vocals and I love lyrics but there is no doubt that first and foremost my songs are a thinly disguised vehicle for opportunities to play the guitar.

Best yet. That lead guitar just sings so sweetly but with a dark power! Love the combination of instruments and the rhythm guitars and basses give real drive to the piece. The lyrics you write are always outstanding and this one is no different. Huge in message and reality. And your vocals? I hear what others say about emotion but I think you have it right. This is not a piece for sentimentality. It's about real life and you sing it as it is.

PS - My glass is half empty. Other than that, you have described me perfectly!

Great playing and you can sing well too!  This song sounds like Steely Dan, which many times sing about screwed up people.   But then somehow we have a bit of that in ourselves.

    Hey Daryl,

Cool song. Really great guitar licks and tone...I like the way the guitar harmonies flow in and out.

Your vocal and harmonies are right on, too and the mix is outstanding from here.

What are you using for the drums? They're swinging pretty convincingly

    All in all, another winner!

Hey Daryl, I really like this one.  Thanks for telling me you posted it.  In fact this is probably my favorite of yours.  I could swear those lyrics are about me.

Nice to hear a bit more grit in your guitar sound.  Harmonies are killer.

BIABDUDE - The drum loops are actually from one of those CD collections you get with one of the recording magazines.  I've never used these loops because they are all exactly 1 measure long, so they require a lot of work to piece together.  But they were what I needed for this song so I put in the time to put them all together in what I hoped would be a workable configuration.  There were hundreds of loops, but every one is only 1 measure long.

Mark, thank you my friend, if anyone knows about guitars - it's you!

Scotty - That's cool.  I would love to do the Untouchables TV theme.

Clifford - Thank you but I will vote for Moondance, a great tune

Janet - I didn't mean to provoke your thoughts, I didn't even mean it to be this dark.  I usually write my song based on a single line, in this case The Speed of Life.  This concept is what came to mind in trying to figure out what the Speed of Life would be about.   I had no plan in the beginning to tell any particular story.

Malcomb - Thank you fellow old dude!

Gary - Thanks - I'm still lost in your Island music!

Tap, James, Vechung - Thanks for the listen.

I post these tunes to get some free feedback and to test how good of job I might have done.  This may be the first song where I have not gotten much in the way of crits.   Don't get me wrong, I WANT the crits, because that's how we improve, but it is very satisfying to do something in which everyone seems comfortable.  Thank you all.

    Spectacular Daryl!!

That solo put a big smile on my face! You really have a signature sound man.

I have to say that the bgv's are the best I've heard from you yet.

Great song and the lyrics caught my ears too.

Like Mark W..I think my fav of yours as well.

I did notice the panned rhythm guitar too..nice.

    Lynn - Thank you.

Larry - Thanks.  Frank shamed me into ignoring my vocal processor.  It's forced me to work harder, which I need to because I don't get nearly enough vocal practice.  I usually have to do vocals late at night when there are no noises around the house.   Thanks so much on the lyrics, I've put a lot of work into trying to develop lyrical skills over the past two years.  I like to think is working at least a litte.

glad i caught this before it slipped into obscurity (page 2!) this could have been in some 70s detective flick soundtrack. io love the rhythm sounds, how the organ pad compliments the guitars, and of course the lead guitars are way cool. enough dynamic change to keep the interest. vocals could actually come up a tad, with them being quite low they get a little buried in that low-mid mids soup - but that is a very minor crit. the backing vox work well. 9/10 dude!

Mark,  Thanks.  Glad you liked the rhythm, I always try to put a lot of effort there as I'm a big rhythm guitar fan, but it's not used as much these days, primarily I think becasue synths are so easy and versitile, plus a lot of guitar players feel slighted by doing "rhythm duty" in the band, but I would LOVE to play rhythm guitar in good stage band.

This song has bounced around the top 10 on Soundclick and while it only got as high as #4, it's bounced up and down within the top 10 for awhile, which is generally a good sign that it's getting played.

You're spot on the vocals.  I was going to try and see if I could squeeze a little dynamics out of the mix as I don't seem to have it in my vocal chords in this key.

    Thanks for the listen.

StudioCat - That is a Korean made Cort M-800 with Gibson Classic 57 humbuckers.  It is a wonderful guitar, and the fit and finish is flawless.  It doesn't have a center block like the 335 so it's a true hollowbody, and it sounds like a hollow body.  It's an obvious clone of the PRS hollow body but I actually like it better. Really.  It's got killer tone and I've used it in 90% of the tunes on my Web site.

Ironically, I just ordered a premium 18" archtop from Mark Campellone and it turns out that Campellone developed the prototype hollow body for Paul Reed Smith (Campellone sent me pictures of the prototype), so it turns out, I've been playing a Campellone "design" for the past 7 years.   Small world.

    Thanks for the listen.
