The Start Screen, Six Months Later

Some of you may recall that when the Start Screen appeared, I posted that I turned it off for a variety of reasons. However...six months later, I now use it consistently. The two changes that made this happen was when they increased the speed, and added a list view so I could see more projects at once.

I realized how much I now use it when I rolled back to a pre-Hopkinton version to check whether a feature existed in the earlier version, and was presented with the original Start Screen. What a difference.

I also (finally) started paying attention to notifications and found out about the Z3TA+ update. It's easier to look when opening SONAR than remembering to open the CCC to see if there's anything new.

The reason I started this thread is for those who turned it off several months ago but haven't tried it since then. I think it's a definite improvement over what we had before, and worth re-visiting.

When it first came out. I was not a fan and wrote a replacement. Since that time, I replaced my monitor which helped with the size and contrast of the screen. Adding sort and pin options are an improvement and I too appreciate the notice feature. While I still use my own start screen because it works with all the versions of SONAR installed on my PC and has a few features the Start Screen lacks, I do use the Start Screen and have for several months.

I just wish there was an ability to sort the pinned projects in list view, not by order that a project was pinned.

Is there a way to navigate anywhere else from within the "New From Template" screen ?  I have my own templates in a separate folder, but I can only have only that shown, or some the other factory folder, and I'm stuck with that choice.  To me this makes the Start Screen somewhat useless.

No, there is only one level of project templates supported in SONAR. This is one reason I use a custom location. Another reason is the installer does not automatically update the custom location. I consolidate the few project templates I use into the one custom folder. I often start project from another "shell" project rather than a template. But that is not much help with the current Start Screen.

Mine takes really long to open. I now have Manchester so I decided to give it another go today, but it takes different amounts of time each try. Strange.

My studio has no internet and I have taken all obvious steps like shutting down the internet wlan drivers.

There is no anti virus or anything like that and Sonar is pretty snappy otherwise, especially on startup, which this laggard of a start screen makes to nought.

I just turned it off again, hope the next update brings an improvement, because I really was a fan when it was new.

I'm not sure I "believe" in it, I just find it useful, and certainly more useful than what we had before. However the way it works also fits my mode of working...I'm usually juggling around a half dozen projects with about an equal number of long-term projects, so to have them all available when I start is very helpful. Another feature that I've really come to like is being able to create a test project without having to name it, create a folder, etc. and then when I'm done, it goes away. I also have very few templates, so there's no issue with my opening from the existing templates folder because it has everything I use anyway.

Again, the only reason I started this thread was because I think some people who were turned off to it at first (like me) might find the latest incarnation useful. But if this thread also serves to collect comments for ways it could be improved, that would be a useful consequence as well.

Hi. I have had the SS active since day one. But in the beginning, I usually just clicked Ctrl+O/N instead because it was so slow. But these days I use it more or less exclusively. It has become part of my workflow (if I were to say I had any).
All the best.

Re: The Start Screen, Six Months Later 2016/02/18 15:15:16 (permalink)
Hi (first post - new here),

I've tested Sonar Artist (demo), Steam Edition (demo) and Professional (demo) and, everytime, I realized that even after closing the Cakewalk Start Screen (selecting a recent project or simply closing the window), the respective process keeps running on Windows (see image).
Actually, I realized that the Start Screen opens three processes in Windows, but closes only one.
Is it a bug?

1 - Before closing Start Screen

2 - After closing Start Screen (two processes remain)

Thx

Maybe the process has to remain active in case you want to open the Start Screen again for another project?

That's weird.  On my system there is no start screen process running with Sonar open on a project.  If I select Start Screen in the File menu two processes appear.  If I close the start screen without doing anyhting, or open an existing project, one process remains until I do anything at all in Sonar at which point it also disappears.  If I create a new project in the start screen, both processes go away immediately along with the start screen (which suits me just fine).

You've always been able to do this with CTRL-N. It's how I start all of my projects, because in the beginning I'm not even sure they're going to become projects unless I get a decent groove going

I have tons of projects in my project folder, many of them just scratch pads or simple ideas that I've vowed to expand upon later, and this is why I love the pinned projects so much. I got tired of opening that file dialog and scrolling through a long list of project folders to find the ones I was working on, and in fact before the pinned projects feature came about I was thinking about putting all of my most regularly worked-upon projects in a separate folder. No need to do that any more.

Resurrecting this because I use Start Screen regularly.
Is there is a limit to how many projects will show on the Start Screen?

I ask because my latest project is not showing up...

I just noticed that the Start Screen will display icons or as a list.
The list view had severeral more entries than my icon view (which was static at 25).
I then pinned a project in the list view.  The first few times I toggled back and forth between views there were no changes.  I then exited out and back in to Sonar and my icon view of Start Screen now has 33 showing.

Not a big deal, but nice to know I haven't come up against a hard limit on the Start Screen.

Re: The Start Screen, Six Months Later 2016/10/16 13:16:36 (permalink)
I don't understand what it does beyond what is available from the File menu.  I save a new file name iteration every once in a while (incrementing an appended numeral), and the Start Screen is just as populated by various old versions as the recent files list - if I pin a version, then the new iteration is un-pinned, making a bother.  I start new unnamed projects with Ctrl-N, start new named projects from the File menu, start existing projects from Windows Explorer.

Now I'm thinking about what I would like to see when I start Sonar "bare".

One cool thing would be an instantly available recording mode.  Ideally it automatically would be set to record any inputs (and outputs) which have any level, so that if I want to record something I'm playing or listening to I can do so easily.

It would be cool to see a skeleton of Preferences - plugin managment, audio settings, updates available, elements from the File menu (without the start screen's pictures).  "Quick tips" are OK.  Everything would have to show up immediately, though, as the only reason to have it display automatically on start is to save time / attention.

I'd like to see basic audio settings (like the Record bit depth, which always seems to be getting reset to 16) prominently displayed on startup.  That kind of thing used to show up in a status bar.

It's not necessarily part of the Start Screen, but to help when starting new projects, it would be great to see a rebuilt template creator since it's kind of unwieldy the way it's operated under the "save as" dialog now.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

I use it a lot (don't use the file menu many anymore) and I'd love to see the option in the preferences that it opens automatically if you close a song ... a keyboard short cut would do as well I reckon ...

Another helpful one would be to add a right mouse menu option which allows the Start Screen to "forget" about some projects i.e. when I save manual backups, it would be nice to drop the older versions from the list ...

When you save (save as) a new version of your project, it would be really nice having  automatically pinned this last version in the start sceen and having automatically unpinned the previous one .

The one thing that would cause me to use  the start screen, is to replace the almost useless automatically generated thumbs with my own images.  That way, they would have meaning to me, and visually I could pick out an older project.

Just my 2 cents.
