Yep, agree with everyone else. Really nice job Janet. You're starting to get this stuff down now and your consistency is holding. Whatever you're doing, keep going. Do I hear a thinner piano that isn't engulfing the stereo field? :) You could have probably gotten away with a little less thinning on this one due to itnot having lots of other instruments to share with. But at least you're keeping it in mind to play nicely with others. LOL! Way to go Janet! :) -Danny

Beautiful, Janet! Your playing and arrangement are becoming increasingly more sophisticated. Did you program the drums? I like where your music is going. Keep up the good work.

Very nice - good focus on the piano with the orchestra really just adding a bit of body to the overall. I really enjoyed it! Cheers, Terry.

Thanks Robby. :) Paulo...that's the way it sounds best. :) Thank you, Dave! Danny, you know what? I was sitting there thinking, 'Now how would Danny do this piano?' And I mean, I dialed that thing every which way for just hours...and then I came up with this and thought, 'well, it's close...maybe he'll notice that the piano is thinner.' And it worked! Actually, you know me...I never even gave that a thought...just played it, fiddled with the volume levels, the reverb and edited the drums a bit (thanks to Rik)...and here it is. But I sure do appreciate your confidence in me. :) (and glad I got lucky on this one!) Thank you. :) Thank you, Lynn. I just chose a preset from Session Drummer, then edited them here and there. It helps that I'm a bonafide drummer now. Well, maybe. lol Thank you, Terry. :)

Janet Danny, you know what? I was sitting there thinking, 'Now how would Danny do this piano?' And I mean, I dialed that thing every which way for just hours...and then I came up with this and thought, 'well, it's close...maybe he'll notice that the piano is thinner.' And it worked! Actually, you know me...I never even gave that a thought...just played it, fiddled with the volume levels, the reverb and edited the drums a bit (thanks to Rik)...and here it is. But I sure do appreciate your confidence in me. :) (and glad I got lucky on this one!) Thank you. :) Hahaha, too funny! I may not always comment, but I'm always listening. :) Yep, I definitely noticed. In some things Janet, you can leave it the way it sounds best to you. You only have to thin it up when you have a bunch of other things going on...and even there, it depends on what else is there as well as whether or not your piano is a focal point or not. The other thing that makes it tough is, you PLAY your piano where most of us sort of just accentuate little lines here and there and may do arpeggiations etc. This in turn, for we that do it this way, makes it easier because we usually don't have as much left hand orchestration as you do. That's really where most of the problems come in because your left hand is walking in bass guitar land, so you either have to tame it.....or mr. bass is going to just be this low end instrument masking or maybe even dissonantly (is that even a word? lol it is now!) screwing things up due to the lower notes being all mixed together. Especially if you're octaving on the left hand. If you don't thin out the piano, we're going to get mud and too much low end pushing through. But in a song like you did here where it's not loaded with other things, you can get away with that big piano sound. Just for your head, here are a few things to watch for in the future. 1. The more low left hand you use and the busier it is, the more it can mess with a bass guitar. Especially if it's a walking bass line. 2. If you use lower strings or a cello or something, again, low notes need to be controlled or you won't be able to tell which is which. 3. When you have guitars in the mix...whether they be clean electric, dirty or acoustic, you may need to thin out the piano in the ranges where the guitars may be crossing your path frequency wise. This is where automation is your friend. If there is an important guitar line going on where you are playing in the same register, you need to determine which instrument holds precidence. Whichever it is, you need to thin out the other or at least back down the non-focal point instrument using your volume fader so they don't fight for the throne. 4. When you're all alone or coupled with another instrument that doesn't share your piano range, you can allow for bigger instrumentation on all fronts. It depends on which instruments you're using and how often they may cross each others paths. So just keep that in mind. 9 times out of 10, if you are trying to mix and notice you keep raising a fader on something to hear it, then raise another fader to hear something else, then raise the other fader you just raised, you're experiencing frequency masking and something needs to be altered. Once you remove the frequencies that may be the same in two or more instruments, the whole mix opens up for the better and the clearer. So just remember that in the future as it can really make a difference for the better. :) I'm proud of you for what it's worth....you're definitely growing artistically as well as in your production skills. :) -Danny

Hey, you just reminded me of something! I DID eq that piano differently! I'd forgotten I'd done that until you started talking about the bass lines. Now I remember that I DID that...and it must have been because of you mentioning it...way back in antiquity. Must have said it enough times cause it finally got through and I actually remembered it! I pulled the bass way down and the treble up (which makes it sound yucky on my laptop, but sweet on my DAW...oh well.) (sorry...I can never remember the correct terms for eq'ing stuff..) Anyway, I thought that in your first post you were talking about actually narrowing the stereo image with channel tools or something. But now I think you meant eq'ing. And I DID IT! Yay me! (for once!) And thanks for explaining automation again. That just may help in the future when I have busier mixes. Thanks again! :)

Yep I meant eq'ing it....as well as the stereo spread thing. Sometimes thinning out needs to be done in the frequency range, other times you need to narrow things up a bit. It's situation/instrument dependent....but you got the right idea now. You just have to know when to do certain things. Sometimes it's a crap shoot really. :) You done good! :) -Danny

Beautiful melody, Janet. I read the lyrics. This could be a hit in the pop or country field IMO. Get a great singer and great producer to record this and it could go all the way.

Janet this song is so good I had to listen to it twice. I am struggling to hear the strings when they first come in, but then again I am listening to it on my lap top. Awesome Job!

Thank you so much, Marcus. This one sorta wrote itself (the tune, that is). I was actually leaving my oldest son's house and thinking that I sure hope I get a chance to tell him one more time how much he means to me. The lyrics morphed from there (lyrics aren't my strong point anyway), but I couldn't get the tune out of my head and had to record it. Or explode. :) Thanks again.

I always like to hear your music Janet. Didn't you recently have another tune on here? I was going to comment but I think it got pushed down the list. This is a very nicely done song as most of your songs are. The pianos are coming through my headphones well but I'm not hearing a lot of dynamics in the strings. Even so this is excellent!

Oh... that was funny.... WWDD? (what would Danny do?) I guess that is one way to look at it. The music is beautiful and well played. I'm with Paulo in post #3... I think you forgot to unmute the vox tracks. I'd really like to hear this with a singer. That's the next step. can't wait.

Thank you, Freddy. :) Well, I'm sure there are some that still believe I can't mix. Or at least well. I'm becoming a better guesser maybe. :) Thank you, Tim. Dynamics in strings...well, I'll have to look into that. Thanks. :) Herb...say what? I guess I missed something there with the WWDD comment. Yeah, I'd love to have a singer for this one. Well, actually, I'd love to be able to sing this one. So, well, we'll see. And thank you!

I didn't know how that piano part would go over..glad you liked it. I'm curious to know why everyone says a female voice in particular. Just curious, cause I never thought about it. I'm using Ivory, like always. I think the only thing I changed is the eq'ing, but it might be something in the reverb. I can't think what it would be...I'll have to listen more closely.
