The Sunday Report...X1 Just as Ornery as Ever

First...Happy Easter to those that celebrate it.  Hope all the chillun had a swell time huntin them dern eggs.

Now to the Sunday Report:

X1 maintained it's "Threat Level 4" rating this week by exhibiting the following behavior while working this weekend.  Infrequent Loss of all audio followed by loud pops (remedied by shuting down X1 and restarting so quite possibly the interface).  The hoary old inserting the wrong VST bug cropped up!  First time with X1.  Tried to insert Kontakt 4 and a synth I don't even have in my plugin manager list (PSYN) got inserted instead (remedied just like always in all other versions of Sonar by rescanning).  Quantized a bass track and then had an invisible "ghost note" that played even after the measure was deleted from the track (finally remedied by deleting the measure then saving the midi data to a new track, removing that instance of Trilian and inserting a new one and pasting the data back into the new instance).  Several stoppages of "The Teleport Server" requiring closing and reopening X1 (lost a bit of work in one of those as stupidly wasn't saving often enough...just a bit tho).  Had one project where my Lounge Lizard and acoustic piano track seemed out of tune...very noticeably out of tune.  Both GUIS in order.  Opened a new project and inserted the very same two VSTs and the very same patches...Yup, IN TUNE!

EDIT.... NEVERMIND RE my Drum Maps.  PEBCAK...hadn't ever copied over all my maps from Sonar to my X1 folder.  Fixed.

Now, where's that chocolate bunny??

Well it is posts like these that keep me on 8.5.3. - it works great.  So why should I take the risk.  I mix out of the box.  I do not need new fancy plugins.  I just want a DAW that doesn't crash, works with midi and audio. sound great, and runs smooth.  So far I have that with 8.5.3.

When I see less complaints on this Board, I will consider another product.

For those happy with X1B, and there appear to be a lot of them, I think that is great.

    Best,
    AB

Hey yourolpal, I have the solution. As I just noted in another thread, Sonar is not broken, it's possessed. Track interleaves change, mouse and keyboard input may be ignored or happen on their own. It doesn't need a software engineer, it needs an exorcism.

    Regards, John

If only it were that easy...or crazy.  I'm starting to think that under the hood X1 looks a lot like my garage.

    Hey  Yorolpal,
Slightly OT but listening to your music, I'm just wondering how many of those songs are original? The first track "Everything" which I just love as a song sounds like some old Motown/Curtis Mayfield song, is it yours?

While I do have some originals (in fact I'm hard at work on  my own CD project right now) most of what you hear on the MySpace site are "remixes" I've done for other folks.  I put remixes in quotes because what I do is not really remix songs but reimagine them.  My usual modus operandi is to strip away everything but the vocal...write a whole new and completely different track (many times changing keys and from major to minor, etc...) and then by using my old friend Mel O'Dyne repurpose the vocal to match.  The song "Everything" originally was done by a electro pop synth group from Manila called "Drip" ( http://dripmanila.multiply.com/music ) and sounded nothing like my Motown mix.  I just thought it would be stupid to make it sound like and ol Motown classic.  That, unfortunately, is how I roll:-)  Glad ya liked it, ol pal.

I'm starting to think that under the hood X1 looks a lot like my garage.
I always giggle uncontrollably when I remember all the pre-launch complaining from the "Cakewalk hasn't come out with SONAR 9 on schedule" folks.   My family is starting to think I'm crazy, because I giggle all of the time.

I remember sitting in Atlanta one morning about 30 years ago waiting impatiently for my flight to take off for LA;  but we were still sitting at the loading gate while they made some kind of repair to the airplane.  The pilot came on the PA and said something like, "I know you are all getting impatient because of the delay, but wouldn't you rather be sitting down here wishing you were up there, than UP THERE wishing you were DOWN HERE.

Sometimes I wish I we were still waiting on X1 (Sonar 9?) wondering why it isn't out yet.  It was a more peaceful and innocent time then.
