The Thursday Report...Where is my revolver??
This automotive project is kickin my rusty butt. And, dern it's ol hide, so is X1. The latest twist is that during todays project about 8 or 9 times my audio playback just shuts off completely and I then only get random pops and silence when trying to play back. The only thing that will get everything back to normal is to shut the project down and then reopen it. I can save after the audio shuts off...thank goodness...just fine. So I haven't been out any work. Just sheer unerving trauma and stress everytime it happens. Mostly at critical moments when I'm just finsihing some intricate edit...natch. Made it through though and got the two files needed today to my client...so I'm off to buy some Broker's Gin and some vermouth and make myownself an extra large martini. Sheesh.

Well Rob it's certainly not the norm from what I and most people posting here seem to be experiencing. Sounds like a drag, to be sure, but it also sounds like there might be some plugin conflict going on.

Heck, 8.5 users like Rob, who posted above, hesitate to upgrade because of your post. However you offer no specifics, logic, or reasoning behind what is happening in your posts, and that is concerning. Without posting specifics of your project or your system, how do we know what is actually going on, how can we help, and how can other users or prospective users get a true assessment of what X1 is really like? Without the project and system specifics that are required to address oddities like those that you are experiencing, and simply posting these "reports" as self-admitted "vents", these posts will have to be moved to the Coffee House. However, if you want to provide the aforementioned information so we can help, these posts are more than welcome here in the X1 forum. SP

Hi Seth- how can other users or prospective users get a true assessment of what X1 is really like By releasing a demo? ;) I just started a CH thread about this since we haven't heard anything about it since the end of March when it was still "firmly in the plan". Any word? Thanks- -Susan

Susan G Hi Seth- how can other users or prospective users get a true assessment of what X1 is really like By releasing a demo? ;) I just started a CH thread about this since we haven't heard anything about it since the end of March when it was still "firmly in the plan". Any word? Thanks- -Susan Soon. Very soon. My point in the above post is that people look at this forum for advice, and to see what's working and what's not. That affects people's decision to upgrade or not, and in turn that affects our bottom line (which in turn affects my ability to have a job). If something is broken or sucks and the poster shows how something is broken or explains why he/ she would prefer a feature to work differently with constructive criticism, that's all good. However, blanket statements without reason or facts to back them up are not constructive. I'm not trying to be a bad guy here, just saying what needs to be said. "Reports" form a user are cool and I know many people find them interesting. All I ask is that the OP explain the issues at hand rather than use this forum as a space to rant, which i not allowed. SP

We have gotten an actual real life assessment from our olpal. It's evident that you can have a system that runs all your plug ins and stuff in 8.5+ 100% rock solid and yet when you run X1 on the very same system with the very same plug ins and stuff you can not trust it to do real work. I gave up using X1 in January. I'm sort of hoping X2 will be even more most successful ever than X1 so that I'm not stuck on SONAR 8.5 for too much longer. best regards, mike

Was that exact project tested in 8.5 with the exact same settings in X1? I doubt it, but we can't be sure since there were no specifics given by the OP. Have you considered that the OP's settings in X1 may vary from those in 8.5? Or that perhaps new plugins/ synths have been added to the project since it was opened and worked on in X1? Or perhaps a specific third-party plugin that worked in 8.5 doesn't work in X1 for some reason? We have absolutely no idea since we don't know what's in the project, what the system settings are, or if said project has even been tested in 8.5. Until we get that info and the testing has been done, this post will not be a real-world assessment of X1, but rather a rant. SP

However, if you want to provide the aforementioned information so we can help, these posts are more than welcome here in the X1 forum. SP Well let's see...now that I've had time to catch a breath...where to begin? First, I went back and did a cursory count of the plugins in that particular project...it numbered well over sixty. You asked me to itemize each one. No...I won't. Nor should I have to. Suffice to say that they are all from reputable known companies like Cakewalk itself...i.e. UAD, FabFilter, Waves, Slate Digital, Toontrack, Nomad Factory, etc....... If everytime there is a problem with Sonar your expectation is it is due to a third party plug then why even sell Sonar to all us dimwits who own so many?? And, if that's the case, why doesn't Sonar have a "bad or problematic plug" reporter so we would know which of the eleventy jillion we use is the culprit?? Why is the onus always on us and not you?? Man up, will ya? And I'm not overly complaining either. I post this kind of stuff on this peer to peer forum in hopes somebody else has had a similar problem and JUST MIGHT have an answer or a workaround. I also post positive things if and when they happen. Go back and read some of my other threads if you don't believe me, ol pal. Should I make my posts in the form of a question like on Jeopardy?? Would that make them more forum appropriate? You also asked me to post my specs in a previous thread...which I did...did you not read them there? Or did you just not return to see? I'll be more than happy to post them again below as I'm rather proud of them, especially the purpose built computer that my friend Jim Roseberry built...it's a hum dinger! And again, I'm using X1 daily and learning more and more about it as I go (and there is much I like very much) but it's no bed of roses. So what? What is? Rock on, ol pal. Rock on. MY SPECS: Sonar X1b build 246 Producer Edition 64 bit running on a Studio Cat Pro System Win 7 64bit 2.8ghz Core i7 with 12 gigs ram. Three Hard Drives 650gig, 1 Terabyte, 1 Terabyte. Focusrite Pro 24 DSP interface. Focusrite ISA One mic pre with an RNC1773 compressor. JBL MSC1 montior controller. Event TR6.5 and sub monitor setup. Really really big screen TV thingy. Little "day-of-the-dead" man playing tiny piano at base of really big TV thingy. Steely Dan's Two Against Nature CD currently laying at a jaunty angle on desktop above itsy little Korg nano kontrollers. Brindle Boxer named Buster snoozing at my feet as he is want to do. Double martini made with Broker's Gin chilling in fridge...awaiting pickup.

I think what Seth is trying to get at is what were the circumstances that led to this "8 or 9 times my audio playback just shuts off completely and I then only get random pops and silence when trying to play back". And, are you saying that every time you open this project, eventually it will do the same thing? His approach is completely legitimate.

Maybe it would help if you put your system specs in your signature? When trying to help someone I'm not going to go searching for some other thread to dig up someone's system specs. I just don't have the time for that with all the threads I monitor here. I'm not blaming the issue you are encountering on a third-party plugin, and I certainly don't need to 'man up'. I'm just trying to figure out what is going on with your system and why it is experiencing what it is experiencing. It's up to you if you genuinely want to receive help or if you just want to rant. If you want help, the best way to get it is to be as specific as possible. After all, we can't reproduce an issue/ bug without an exact recipe.
