The Tragedy (with vocals)

Here's "The Tragedy" with vocals.  As I mentioned in another thread, a singer/lyricist had joined my Dreambliss project and he finished laying down the vocal tracks today.  I integrated them into the project and made tons of tweaks, etc.  Please let me know what ya's think of the vocals and how the mix is balanced, etc...

Check it out here, it's called "The Tragedy":
http://www.reverbnation.com/dreambliss

I've been quite busy lately with non-music stuff, and just recently music stuff... so I'll be trying to get back on here to listen to more stuff.

Lyrics:
Howling wind blows through the room,
the temperature decreases
One of you is leaving soon,
his spirit will be freed.
I am having trouble breathing
I can't hold on for long
But before I leave here
Will you help me save my soul?
With all the best intentions,
I journeyed through the darkness
Into superstition,
out of innocence.
How you left us so afraid of secrets shared beyond the grave...
We see all you are and could have been.
Release your soul into the afterlife?
You decide.
I will not be the one to.

wow very different with vox, really adds an extra dimension. not sure i would have effected the vocals quite as heavily as you have; for me there's too much verb on them, especially with all the delays and call-and-response stuff. this is really gonna take your project to the next level though dude, can't wait!

    Luke,
Lots of creativity here.  The arrangement is stellar. EVerything is clear in the mix with plenty of punch.  Vocals give a nice contrast to the edge of the music.
    Very nice production.

Cool song! I like this very much.

I think the Vocals are hard to understand. Maybe bring them up a bit or eq some frequencies up while taking away from others giving the vocals more room. ie: bring up 900hz in the vox while taking 900hz away from the guitars and keys.

    Excellent work!

@mgh – Thanks Mark!  The vox will certainly bring my project to the next level and I’m excited!  Dan, the singer, did a stellar job.  I appreciate your feedback.  I normally wouldn’t have processed the vox as much as I have, but due to the story behind this song, I thought it was fitting.  I’ll check on the verb, though.  It might be a bit too much.

@No How – Thanks Rick!  I love the progressive song structure, keeps the song interesting all throughout and I like to trickle things here and there, and make change-ups and even bring back melodies with different instruments but add a slight deviation, etc.  You will notice that type of stuff in my other tracks.  I worked hard at getting the production where it is, so I appreciate the feedback.  The vox really do contrast the music yet fits it brilliantly.  I’m still floored by Dan’s addition!

@Guitarpima – Thanks Robert!  I appreciate your feedback.  Perhaps since I know the lyrics so well that I hadn’t noticed the vox might be a bit hard to understand.  I will definitely look into that.  I’m glad you enjoyed this!

    Hi Luke,

Sounds great, man. The vocals definitely take your, already outstanding, music the another level.

    I liked this a lot.

Wow...this is great, Luke!  (sorry I'm so late...just getting caught up around here.)

Amazing how much vocals bring to a piece.  I agree, they're a bit hard to understand, but after a few times through I imagine I'd get them.  Great job here!

I gave a listen and  there might be too much reverb (I thought I posted already but don't see it !). Perhaps that fits the genre. Here is another link I was listening to this morning from the Songs Forum that is done with a well done vocal track:

    Hey, Luke,

I'm late to the party on this, and I think I remember the original instrumental version, but I have to say Dan did a killer job on the vocals, and they really bring the song to life!

Excellent musicianship, as always, and I think the mix is really perfect for the genre.  The vocals add an entirely new dimension to your outstanding music.

    Great work, Luke, fantastic stuff!

Nice work, mon! A pretty ambitious piece to take on. The drums are uber compressed, but I guess that's par for the genre. The vocals are nice. I don't mind them being a bit obscured, and I think that's actually a good thing, unlike today's style of hyper up front, hyper automated vocals. It leaves something to the imagination, as did many great albums of the past.

    Holy Fantastic, Batman!!!

This sounds great!!!!  The vocals are excellent and could stand to come up a bit. The lyrics are getting a bit burried by the mix during the heavy parts.

@geeare1 – Thanks Gary!  I appreciate the kind words and glad you enjoyed this!

@Janet – Thanks Janet!  It’s ok that you’re late, you’re never expected to comment but it’s always a pleasant surprise!    Thank you for the feedback.  I may revisit the vox.

@CLEAN – Thanks Mark!  I appreciate the feedback!  I love the dark/eerie/haunting sound, but I understand it may be too dark for others taste

@SeriousNoise – Thanks Bobby!  I appreciate the feedback.  I sure do love that haunting sound don’t I?

@silvercn – Thanks Charles!  I may make some tweaks yet to the vox.  Thanks for the link.  I’ll take a listen.  I appreciate the feedback!

@Bob Oister – Thanks Bob!  Dan is a hell of a vocalist and lyricist.  He’s quite talented and I’m happy that he joined the project.  The album is going to be pretty wicked now!  I appreciate your feedback and thanks for the kind words!

@BIABDude – Thanks Box Dude!  I guess it does have a kind of Rock Opera sound to it.  Never thought of that before!

@droddey – Thanks Dean!  Yeah the drums are quite compressed, but that’s the genre and sound I’m after .  I don’t like the too upfront vox in today’s style.  The vox needs to sit into the mix but up enough to be understandable.  I appreciate your opinion on the vox, although I think I may revisit them and bring them up a tad, maybe reduce some of the verb as well.  Although I do agree that slightly obscured vox can be interesting.

@Scottytunes – Thanks Scotty!  I’m glad you like this!  I will probably revisit the vox as I mentioned before to get it better balanced.  There are a few other things I feel I need to tweak in the mix yet, just really minor adjustments though.

Definitely a great idea adding vocals to this.  I agree they were a bit difficult to hear at times but so are so many I hear on the radio.  I think that if you work on the vocal mix a bit it might help.  I don't do enough production work to help there.  HOWEVER, that having been said, I really liked it and it's a captivating tune.  Unlike my parner CLEAN, I do like dark side stuff.  This didn't get over that far to me but after all, he's CLEAN, OF THE LIGHT SIDE.  LOL  All in all, this is a very good song.

Luke, this is excellent, great vocals really put the icing on this cake. I might back off the delay in the verses, maybe automate it to hit on the last line each time but that's a personal pref, the whole thing sounds very good as is.

Man this was enjoyable ..... listening to how you wove it all together.

Quite a nice project.  I tend to focus on the guitars and the tone is good.

The verb on the vox IMHO fits the overall groove of the song.

Wow! Impressive! Great song and good vocals.

The delays and everything happening there makes it sound a little more busy than neccesary and is a little distracting to me. But some tweaks and this could be on MTV!!! Really good stuff. Great work on the guitars and drums. Sounds perfect!

Hmmm. I was sure I commented on this already. I certainly listened to it and I liked what I heard.  Just listening agian now to remind myself.....

The vibe and feel of this is really good, much to like. The vocals have the potental to sound great, but need a little work for me as they are not always that clear at the moment. I love me some reverb and delay, but it's all a bit busy for me as it is now. Everything else sounds about right, so a few tweaks on the vox will make it spot on to my ears.

This is Dan - I just wanted to say thank you for listening to the lyrics and understanding the content.  I owe the conceptual inspiration to Luke, but the reason I have pursued music is to share my musings on mortality and our favorite existential questions and I greatly appreciate that you were able to emote with them in the way that I intended.  Luke has provided a brilliant backdrop musically and conceptually for me to ponder over top of and relay the things I've realized thus far during my existence.

I greatly appreciate all of the feedback, and thank you all for listening!

Funny, I was just listening to the new Evanescence CD, and this certainly has that vibe-hard rockin' but melodic. Just like Evanescence, some vocals are there for the mood, and sometimes the words are secondary. Overall, I like this song a lot.

The skill at which you mixed this production was very inspiring. I like the effects on the vocals I just wanted to understand some of the words a little better. Probably just a minor tweak to keep the same effect. Great job!

I didn't like the stocatto vocals in the very beginning, but when the legato part started I was like....oh yes. Very nice.

I definitely like the characteristics of the vocal. This is cool. Something I could easily listen to more than once.
