The Ultimate Acoustic Song Set List

Ok, So I know this has probably been done to death a million times over, but I would like us to put together a set list (database) of some brilliant cover songs that can be done on the acoustic guitar (solo/duo).

Here's three that I want to start with: -

1. American Pie
2. Heard it Through the Grape Vine
3. Waterloo Sunset

"Expert in novice advice"

Sonar PE 8.5.1 (pre -5,6,7,8) - Logic Pro Studio 9.1.6 - Windows 7 32bit - Mac OSX Snow Leopard - MacBook Pro 13" i7Core 2.7GHz Sandy Bridge, 8Gb Ram, Intel 520 SSD - Edirol UA-25 - Blue Woodpecker Ribbon - Rode NT5 Condenser - Shure SM57 --- Fender 52 AVRI Telecaster LH - Ovation Special Balladeer LH.

although they don't fit the genre of most of the songs on here:

green day - time of your life

    coldplay - green eyes

tonic - if you could only see

    dave matthews band - crash

the 90's alt rock scene didn't really create a wealth of saturday night standards...

I know what you mean about cliches Monk, but try some of them in front of the right audience and they love to hear them. I am currently playing drums in a local party / events band although we are getting pub gigs also and it's hard to turn them down. If you saw our set list you might groan and think "oh no- no originality there at all" However I have been thrilled at the reaction we have had in our first 3 gigs to date, folks just love to hear live renditions of the formative years of their musical memory. Sometime I think putting in the more obscure stuff for the wrong audience is a bit self indulgent and done more for the benefit of the performers that the audience. Just my 2 penny (cents) worth on the subject. Depends on what the audience is expecting of course.

    Peace Love and Understanding

Oh no, I get it. They're cliche for a reason, because they're popular. It's just nice to see that everybody's list so far has a lot of thoughtful choices!

Wow, I'm impressed, seven straight answers before it starts to de-rail. Just some light hearted fun and hopefully nothing to ponder too deeply on. It's also great because I get to expand my taste in music from your suggestions.

    Here's three more;-
    1) Strawberry Fields Beatles
    2) As Long As I Can See The Light CCR
    3) Factory Girl Rolling Stones

All of these songs I have managed to play live on the acoustic for what it's worth.

Elvis has done it numerous times later in his career as an acoustic cover.
But you are right it was a beautiful jazzy electric number when first recorded.

Interestingly...Sting claims that Allison ( a mushy love song with a girl's name in the title) gave him the courage to bring Roxanne to the Police.

It doesn't matter if it was electric originally. In New Orleans in the 70s, I listened to a young lady doing Frank Zappa on acoustic

I used to play an acoustic version of Hurt, by nine inch nails, years before Johnny Cash did his brilliant version.
I heard an acoustic (solo) guitar version of Irish Heartbeat by Van Morisson that was just heartbreaking.
Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones.

    Hey Taylor,

    Nick Drake - "Pink Moon"

I love playing Nick Drake stuff but you need a spare guitar or two because of his tunnings. I once played "Which Will" live to an audience of around 30 people or so, and I've never ever experienced an audience to become so relaxed during a song. I honestly nearly s^*t myself because of it.

I've only played "Pink Moon" myself - "Which Will" is a good song though.
