The Wall - another Kansas tune
This is one of my all time favorite songs. Kerry Livgren is a genius. It is my 2nd project using GPO, which took me a few hours to get the orchestration down. it was again inspired by larry baird's orchestrations for the live Kansas concerts. My mastering settings are warmer than my previous projects. Same with the vocal processing - thanks to feedback from this great forum. http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9429511

Very nice, G-Trek! This is the entire package done expertly. The snare in the section beginning at 3:58 seems to be a little to out front though IMO. Maybe drop it back down into the mix a bit. As I said, it is only my opinion.

great effort! agree with scotty, the snare is a bit intense, it's just a bit too loud, from being totally dialed in. always loved this tune, i guess it's a religious slant... but could be applied to about any endevour. you should send this to scotty! let him put one real violin melody on top of it, to go with the orchestration. no matter how good the source, now matter how good the programming, the real thing would put it over the top. some of the extraneous guitar riffing, for the sake of speed, seems unnecessary.... a long sustained beautiful tone, would work better than the psuedo yngwie riffs. honestly, a great version overall.

rrnpub - thanks! scottytunes - thanks for the tip on the snare batsbrew - thanks for the comments. I never thought of the religious angle - to me "the wall" represents a self imposed barrier, but I can see how it could have religious meaning. guitarhacker - thank you alkie - thank you.

OK stop it! You're making the rest of us look bad. Great production man, you really are an excellent arranger, great mix, I'm with Alkie - I want your voice, or at least one that works that well. Nice rock guitar tone and well played. Very impressive, really. Daryl

Excellent! This is also i one of my fav Kansas tunes. Sounds so clear. The only thing I would change is maybe a little less room reverb on the snare but thats just me. Excellent performance and recording.

Particularly liked the Orchestration and Drums. This is one of Kansas's finer tunes, I was a huge fan of theirs when they were active with their original incarnation...Probably saw them a half dozen times at their peak....nicely done indeed.

Very nice! Kerry would approve. I've known of Kansas since they were known as White Clover out of Topeka, KS. in the late 60's. This style still speaks to me. All the best, Lynn

drumstixkev - thanks for positive comments. I had fun with the orchestration. soundtweaker - Thank you - yes my favorite kansas tune too rbh - thanks. Yes that original kansas line up was the best. The live Bluray that just came out is pretty cool - but unfortunately robbie was missing larry - ah but you are not too old to develop an appreciation for fine distorted guitars! give it a little time. geeare1 - thanks. Kansas music kind of transcends the ages - just plain great music. lynn - thank you. freddy - thank you!

Nice work Geno. Always loved this song, and Steve Walsh is one of my favorite singers from back in the day. His solo album Schemer Dreamer is a great record nobody ever heard. You did this one justice. Randy p.s. Curious about your vocal chain that you used on this. If you get a chance, I'd like to see what you used. Really great sound.

Randy - thanks - I love your version of Lazy! that machine head album was huge for me when I was growing up. The vocal processing for the Wall (and my other recent projects) is really simple: I record using a Sure KSM27 through Line6 UX2 recording completely dry. In Sonar the only thing I am using is the new Cakewalk VX64. All I'm using from that plugin is the Compander, and a roll off of the lows on the EQ. Otherwise the EQ is completely flat. Perfect Space for reverb. So that's it - in a nutshell the only processing is the Compander from VX64. I have to mention also that I record vocals using a reflexion filter which simulates a vocal booth and lets me record a vocal signal that is not influenced by the room. This made a huge difference in quality from years ago when I would record in an open room. I really like the sound, and I wish that I recorded my earlier projects with dry vocals, but I recorded them with a pre-amp. Now I want to re-record my previous projects dry so I can use this chain. Freddy - thank you so much for listening and commenting!
