"The Wanderer", looking for feedback!

Hey all, I'm looking for feedback/comments on this nearly finished mix of this song, "The Wanderer". I'm planning on finalizing ALL of my songs at the end of next week, so I just wanted to get some feedback before I do that. I'm not even gonna bother posting this on soundclick or myspace, but here is a direct link to the song:

The Wanderer, link!

Again, all comments are welcome, and lyrics are posted below. Thanks
-Jeff

When the wind blows, it will take me
To far away cliffs, and quiet cities

And up on the hills
The zephyr will cleanse
A thousand pounds of guilt
I look to the clouds
Their pale luminescence
And I scream so loud,

"What is a place, we call home?"
(“Is this place something more?”)

When the wind blows, it will take me
To uncharted lands, and ancient cities

I look to the streets
So empty, abused
Yet, they are so kind to me
I've gone so far out
Yet, close to my heart
And I scream so loud,

"What is a place, we call home?"
(“Is this place something more?”)

Let the wind
Take your side
Let the earth
Hold your might
Let the clouds
Lift your eyes
Let the moon
Shine through night

Jeff - I thought this was a great piece of music. Liked the simple fade out on the guitar on the ending. If I had one nit, it would be to bring up the vox a wee bit more. To my ears, everything sounded spotless. Excellent tune!

Great tune man, You definitely have a firm grasp on production techniques. The pronunciation of some words threw me a little but I dont think it really subtracted from the overall impressiveness of this track. I love the chord changes under the lead, very creative. Top notch stuff man.

When you are inspired, you can accomplish amazing things… this is definitely an example of what can be realized when captivating lyrics are matched with virtuosity. The build draws you in and does not let you down. The vocal processing delivers the right depth and the harmonies are haunting. The vocal levels become yet another distinctive instrument in your arsenal of musical textures… just make sure you include the lyrics in the liner notes. There is an other-worldly, yet very organic feel to this… especially when the percussion hails the arrival of the hi-hat(?) duet… a move that clearly establishes the width of the third act. I was completely drawn in by the time the guitar broke loose, powerful and full, given plenty of room to take center stage while the vocals weaved their magic in and out… simply brilliant. This is a very emotional piece, Jeff and absolutely lovely.

The slow fade in makes me wonder if this is going to be a concept piece… if so, I can hardly wait.

    it's about the music...

    Hi Jeff,

I was impressed with this song as well. The only crit I have is maybe bringing up the vox, which has already been mentioned - to my ears the this really needs to be done on the chorus - I didn't think there was a problem in other sections of the song.

    Great job,
    Doug

Good song. To me it just seems kinda harsh. I compared it to your other song "TYB" and The Wanderer seems a little harsh (frequency wise) to me. Song structure I like. But my fave is TYB and Get Away.

I agree with Mist. Listening to your other stuff now! I love Pop music!

Thanks everyone for the comments so far. Couple of you mention that my vox in the chorus needs to be louder, and I want to ask...do many of you split the main vocal line between different tracks? Because for the most part, I've been keeping the main vox line into a single track, so that the vocals are at the same volume throughout the song, for consistency's sake mainly. I compress it alot so the volume does remain the same as well. Well anyways, maybe I can just turn down the guitar volume or something, I'll figure it out

Gorgeous music. I love this! I'm afraid I could hardly understand any of the words until it came to 'what is the place we call home.' So I guess I'd have to say I'd like to hear the vox up more on the verses. Great instrumentation and great build-ups, great playing, etc. Beautiful!

Thanks everyone for the comments, and apparently the unanimous-ness of "bring up the vox", lol. I actually think I might've solved the problem, I added another band in the multi-band compressor specifically tailored to the vocal line now, so I think that should help bring it out in the mix.

I could'a done been sworn I'd commented on this already, but I guess not... Anyway, very good tune, maybe my favorite of yours so far. It has a great atmosphere, a great buildup, and a wonderful lo-fi production that really works well. At least on my little speakers it's a little bit sibilant and high endy though.

    Hi, Jeff,

Another outstanding song with great performance and production, really pro sounding. I agree the vocals could come up a bit, and my only other input would be that the lead guitar solo, which sounds dynamite, appears to be stepping on the background vocal parts during the lead. I know the guitar solo should have focus at this part of the song, but maybe you could try separating the guitar solo and the overlapping vocals a little bit with panning or EQ so they both stand out apart from one another a bit more. Just a suggestion, really fantastic song, keep 'em coming, nice job!
