The Weavers' Waltz

Here's a tune I wrote and recorded for some dear friends of mine, John and Sandy Weaver.

Loved the melodies and phrasing...  Great pitch too.  It all sounds "just right".   For me your playing comes across as having a great level of control, something I very much appreciate.

The only real question I have is why are you playing percussion and wearing a mambo shirt?

I love this tune! I'm now one of your followers and I'm so happy I'll get to hear this song many times.

My grandpa was a Scottish fiddler (who used to order one or the other of his six children to "chord along" with him on the piano and rebuke them for every misplaced chord) and this brought back wonderful memories to me of sitting in their living room with all the relatives, and singing along or just listening together.

Everything "fits" in this song just right - the song sounds like it's always been here. That's something I'd love to accomplish in my own songwriting some day.

The melody is just lovely, and when you came in with the chorus in sweet harmony near the end, it almost brought me to tears.

Hey, Scotty,

Great to see you on the forum!

Excellent job on this beautiful piece of homespun Americana!

It's always a true pleasure to hear your phenomenal fiddle work, and this is a full, rich sounding pro mix that sounds perfect for a classic waltz.

Dynamite stuff, brother, and I hope your father-in-law is doing much better after his accident and surgery!

Have a great week, Scott!

Boy that sure hangs together well. I like how the bass was present yet controlled, the supporting piano and acoustic guitar? autoharp?  were both there as a foundation for that _amazing_ violin performance.

I think your lower piano note and the bass were 100% in unison the whole time. Very nicely done!!!

At 3:42 / 3:43 you might check one of your acoustic guitar strums, just a tad off maybe? Something comes in a bit early. Or, let it go, no one will care :)  that's how completely awesome your song is.

The ritard at the ending shows you really know your stuff.

cheers,
-Tom

Hi Laura,
I'm real glad that you like the tune. My father was also a Scottish fiddler as well as a classical violinist. I used to love hearing him play tunes from Winston "Scotty" Fitzgerald's LP. Many of my tunes, I like to sound "authentic" and with others, I like to break the tradition and rock them up a little bit. As you could see or hear, this one was on the "authentic" side.

My father was the same with my sister and I, demanding that we stop what we were doing and chord with him. My sister would sometimes cop an attitude causing my father to tap the top of her head with the tip of his bow. It was comical to watch.

Thanks for listening and for following me. I'm now following you too.

Have a great holiday week!

That's just fantastic Scott. I love listening to the brilliant Shetland Isles fiddler Aly Bain, and this reminded me of his playing. The connection between Scots/Irish and US folk music is plain to hear. Beautiful playing and composition.
