"The Werewolf Song" - classic horror story re-told in rock style

first off, happy halloween folks!

working title: "The Payment"

http://soundcloud.com/bat.../werewolf-song-2012-eq

this is a brand new version of an older demo i did a few years back.

story:

it's a little ditty about 2 brothers and a lycanthrope.......

it's loosely based on the original wolfman movie, the one where larry talbot gets bitten by the werewolf, and he see's the pentagram in his hand; he knows he's phucked, so he goes to the old gypsy woman who knows about these things, to find a cure, and she basically tells him the only thing for him to do, is to kill himself......
what a bum deal.

anyway, these 2 brothers have been partying all night, drunk as skunks, and one of them staggers out into the moor, and proceeds to meets his maker.

the remaining brother wants revenge, but has sobered up now,  and has figured out that he'd better get some kind of ammunition...

....so he goes to see the gypsy-witch, to get some aconite (wolfsbane) and a spell here and a prayer there, and believes that he's well prepared, and he goes out to the moor to get his revenge.

but that's not what he gets......

“The Payment”
Written by RF Gilliland

Nightime, on the moor
drank up all the mead
mist is in the air
full moon, did the deed.

never saw the evil...
that poor ole son of a b!tch
felt the claws that gripped his throat
yeah, he was dead without a twitch.

"it's your brother down on the moor,
with his head down at his feet!"

drink the aconite, tonight
toast the witches curse
pray to whoever you believe in
to pass over you the worst

it's your brother on the moor,
with his head down at his feet
and the debt has not been paid in full
will you, your maker, meet?

run into the moor
and see the evil eye
upon you, cast a glance,
and the payment, it is nigh.

Bat, you're always different, and always excellent.  This is the kind of song that should have a movie written around it.  You're one of the better lyricists around, and this song satisfies on different levels.  Your vocals and guitar work are superb.  Can't wait to hear more from your new studio ( you do have a new studio, don't you?).

    All the best,

DAng!  I like everything about this song!  I don't normally listen to this flavor, but it's a great mix Mr batsbrew.  LOVE the acoustic guitars' treatment, as also the vox.  I think you have this one dialed in.  I did notice a bit of sub-low end on that kick...it shook the picture on my wall.  Maybe a little rolloff around 50Hz is in order?

Unique!  Fitting!  Ghoulishly fun.  Thanks for sharing.

    Cheers!

    Perfectly crafted and produced.

but I will say that for me there is too much going on and would have liked to hear more prominence on your starting riff throughout.

    That is all!

Very creative Bat. I liked the underlying guitar motif going on here and the dual guitars at 1:52. As always you're tearing the guitars up in a good way. Thanks for sharing this!

    solid halloween songs, check!!

    LOL
i guess i know what you mean, but it's such a very small, tight genre...
    draculas bites.........
    mummys relentlessly slow-chase......
    black lagoon creatures swim.....
    frankensteins rage.....

sounds like rock and roll to me.

    Lynn
    thanks for the kind words..
well, yeah, a movie around it is close, but for me, it's really about putting music or 'soundtrack' to all the best werewolf movies i ever saw....

and yes, this is from the new studio setup, yes...

here's a shot of the session for the werewolf song, minus my acoustics:

the middle section (the scary middle spooky bridge part) used all these guitars to create all the ambient noises, the feedback in harmony, the psuedo screaming parts...

i've got feedback harmony happening in major and minor key, and they continually overlap each other, to create some tension and dissonance

the main rhythm electric parts were done with the '77 Ibanez artist

thanks for listening, glad you dig this one!
sub lows, well, when i mix, i do a 35 hz roll off on the low end on the master bus...

then when i master, i do a similar thing, so i try to take care of real SUBS.......
but i do like a full low end, that's the hardest thing of all to make the call on.

most systems can't even do below 80hz, so for the majority of playback systems it's probalby not an issue, but with anyone using a nice low end enhancement, it may be too much.
i've thought about doing higher roll-offs, it's something i'm still experimenting with quite a bit.
    every mix adds up.

    "too much going on"....?!
    poppycock!!
heheh, well, i like a full production, that's for sure....
it'd be easy to strip this down all the way to one acoustic guitar and one voice..
but i don't hear it that way.
originally, i had this 'marching' effect on the very first version, almost like a drum beat for a funeral procession.
    it sounded quite ominous.
over time, it's been whittled and whittled, but there's nothing to say i can't whittle some more.

    thanks man....
that guitar motif, i guess you're talking about that plaintiff melody that starts high and moves down, against that drone tone that i'm playing behind it?
that was fun to suss out, it's kind of spooky, kind of melancholy, and kind of foreboding, without being aggressive.
at least, that's what i was shooting for.

it's supposed to represent the time period between when the 2nd brother finds the 1st brother's head on the ground, and has time to sober up, and come up with his plan for revenge.
