The Why Thread.....

Why is it that if you send something by ship it's called Cargo and if you send something by car it's called a shipment?

Why is it when someone starts a thread in Coffee House that the very first reply takes it off topic?

You're supposed to unplug it first, then it'll retract.

Why do drivers merging onto the freeway cross 5 lanes to go 50 mph in the "fast lane"?  They usually cut me off in the process.

I've driven east coast.  I grew up in NJ.  Yeah, there are plenty of bad drivers there too.

I used to commute to San Diego and I've seen some scary stuff.

I used to wonder if the prevalence of freeway shootings had an influence on the driving out West.  I always noticed, after a shooting incident, a pronounced upsurge in courtesy.  I also think the road system is, in general, better thought out there, so you don't often have to cut someone off just to get on the freeway, as is pretty common out East (i.e., the "Mixing Bowl" in Washington D.C.).  And, I think, being cut off tends to propagate, just as being treated courteously does...

Good points.  Sometimes we're too courteous out here.  I'd rather see drivers be a little more decisive and consistent.  Yeah, I know, I can dream can't I?
