The audio File .wav has a 32 bit format and can't be used
I am trying to do remote work with a guitar player and when he tries to open my tracks the above is the error that he gets. He told me it is because he has a 64 bit Mac. I did some research and it is because of the bit format, so I have sent him the same waves at 24 bit and I am awaiting can he use those. What am I loosing or gaining by going down to 24bit verses 32bit? I will keep you guys posted if changing it to 24bit works

You don't loose anything, because your audio-device is surely only 24-Bit.
The 32-bit-wave form Sonar is only a container for the 24-bit-file.

You don't loose anything, because your audio-device is surely only 24-Bit.
The 32-bit-wave form Sonar is only a container for the 24-bit-file.
Do you think he will be able to use my files now that they are 24bit?

If you have more problems in the future, it may be helpful in addition to the computer, add the DAW (and version) to the post. Just like you would for questions about your system. There is nothing about a 64bit Mac that is causing the problem, it is the file types the DAW can import.

If you have more problems in the future, it may be helpful in addition to the computer, add the DAW (and version) to the post. Just like you would for questions about your system. There is nothing about a 64bit Mac that is causing the problem, it is the file types the DAW can import.
He has not responded yet but I am assuming he is using Logic, Pro Tools and he is using Garage band

Here is you answer: Imported audio files should have a sample rate of 44.1 kilohertz (kHz) and a bit depth of 16 bits. From the Apple site http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2008

Imported audio files should have a sample rate of 44.1 kilohertz (kHz) and a bit depth of 16 bits.

Thanks for the information but is this the standard? I know a lot of professional use Pro Tools is that the way we would have import your wave files let's say to a Professional to be Mastered? Could the issue be that i am using 64-bit Double Precision Engine? Also when recording if you change the sample rate to let's say 96000 when you export you have to convert it back to 44100 so what is the point of recording at a higher bit rate if you have to turn around and convert it back?

It appears to be for GarageBand 11. What does Pro Tools have to do with GarageBand? Nothing you do in SONAR is going to change how GarageBand works. You raise a few good points to discuss with your collaborator. I thought the guitarist also had Pro Tools and Logic. If so, those might be better choices than GarageBand for this project.

Because he was using a mac I assumed he maybe using Logic or Protools. Will his files work properly when I import them back in if I am using 32bit or will I have to convert them to 32bit first and then import?

Yea, the files will work in SONAR. Given the apparent limitations of GarageBand, if the guitarist is running OS X 10.8.4 or later and has a spare $200, Logic X might be a good upgrade .
