The first time ever I saw your face - cover forum colab

This is the song made famous by Roberta Flack

The current Mrs Daryl1968 does a great job of the vocals imo, Ed Kocol (Bapu) is on bass, Steve Drewer (StevestrummerUK) is on Lead Guitar and the rest is me.

Enjoy - comments and crits gratefully received

Man, this girl is a great singer! Really, she makes the song. Not to say everything else is not good?

But this woman... She has a gift.

I really, really enjoyed her performance. Thank you.

This is wonderful!!!! Your wife's voice moves me greatly. She gives the song a sweet, haunting vibe and sits perfectly in the mix. Her pitch is spot on, which is more than I can say for 90% of today's super stars.

    Great job by all involved!!!

Fantastic!  Mrs. Daryl has a great emotive voice!  fantastic performance!  great performances by all!  bass is nice, coming thru well.

I'd suggest a little less verb, especially on her vocals and the dulcimer and acoustic.  snare is a little too "sizzly", IMO, I'd roll off some of the high end (and if you have verb on it, I'd take that down a notch as well, or at least low pass the verb to take some of the sharpness out).

performances are just fan-freakin-tastic!  (great solo, strums!)  LOVE her voice!

Great Job by the current Ms Daryl!!!!

Not to derail, but my best friend knows Roberta and has visited her several times in NY.
Roberta just released a cover of Beatles tunes.

PS I remember making " turn the  lights down low mood" mix tapes back in the day with this tune on it,,

    it always worked

I really like this..... so much better than the original.

Vocals are superb.... BGV harmonies are perfect. Instrumentation is good....

The only nit I have, and in no way is this a put down of anything you did on this beautiful and well produced tune. It sounds to me like Mrs Daryl1968's vocals are compressed just a tad too much or she's singing too close to the mic...or a combination of the two....... there doesn't appear to be an "open and airey" feel to the vox. Kinda boxed in, held down by a ceiling. Like I said, this is a nit, not a major issue. It's a subtle thing. Noticeable in the first part of the song especially.

I really like the slide solo in there....... perfect.

She totally rocked this song. Great job all the way around from everyone involved.   You all did a good job and should be proud of this version.

Kudos to all involved in this.  You chose a great song to cover, and your arrangement is just right for this.  I would like to hear this with the vocal nearly dry for a more intimate effect, but this will do.

    really like this version!

i'd like to hear more bass guitar tho...
because there is so much high end on the guitar part, and the voice is so upfront in the mix, it needs a bit more weight in the low end to really pull this mix together.
add a bit of bottom to the kick as well, it's a bit thin.

did you use a ebow on the solo, or just gain/drive/sustain?

    great performances, thanks for that

MM100 - Cool about Ms Flack - I will check out the Beatle stuff. It didn't work for me in the studio with the current Mrs Daryl1968

    Hey Daryl and current Mrs.D
GREAT cover! The arrangement is killer for the vocal delivery.  What a smooth delivery. It can be hard to hold some of those loooong notes but the current Mrs D nailed it. Her voice has a Shawn Colvin quality/vibe.  KUDOS!  Looking forward to hearing more'

Hey Daryl, agree with everyones comments.  The vocals are a little too bright for me, it's making some of the breaths a little pronounced, also the acoustic is a little too bright as well.  The acoustic and the vocals are ocupying the same frequencies probably the hi hat too, its making the master feel a little too britle and bright.

But def the Mrs can sing and well played.

    Peace Ben

    GREAT JOB everyone!!!

    Loved all the performances.

The only question I have is on the Vox, to me sound a little muffled or ??? I get the brightness others have mentioned but theres something I just cant put my finger on that stands out to me.  Wish I could explain it LOL

Don't know the original, but this sounds pretty good to me. I reckon when you move on from the "current" Mrs D, you should try to  keep her sweet - never hurts to have a good singer on hand ! I like the sound of her voice a lot, but it's too prominent in the mix for me and mebbe a little bright overall.

    Nice work all.
