The latency problem

Hi all,
I did a test and found that this: Atheros AR5B93 Wireless Network Adapter
is causing a drop, so what do I do about that?
Thanks
Dan

turn it off when you're working with MC.  don't be on the internet at the same time you're mixing or recording.

Beag is right, being on the net when recording is a recipe for disaster. Imagine the antivirus wants to update in the middle of that grammy winning take!

Turn off anti viruses, and such.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

Agreed. Turn the internet off when you record. My Dell has a switch on the side to manually shut it off.

Correct, I discovered the problem while using a latency tester.

just shutting off the internet will not solve the latency problem inherent in a factory sound card..... just so you know.

no, but it sounds like he used the DPC latency checker which is not an audio program per se, but a checker of the inherent latency in his system.  if it has spikes then that will cause problems with AUDIO (and video) latency for recording.  network cards, especially wireless network cards, are notorious for causing spikes in the DPC latency.  once that's removed, popping and clicking in the audio soundcard will usually go away (unless there's another problem causing them).

I am getting a lot of "buzzing" or "static" sounding noise at the moment.
    Still working on it.

When using a stock sound card, there is a definite limit on how far you can move the latency slider. Moving it too far will cause noises, pops, clicks, maybe staticky noise or full blown audio dropout. The trick is to find the sweet spot where the latency isn't too bad but there are no bad noises.
I never found that spot on my first computer with MC on it.

With the factory card, you will have latency issues... that's just part of the way it works (or doesn't work).... if you work with smaller audio projects you should be able to avoid the major latency issues since they mostly occur with running soft synths.

I've never had that problem but I'm wondering about something. If you record say a drum track..... play along with it (let it run with latency) soloed to be sure it's right.... then BOUNCE it to an audio track and remove the synth..... you have now converted the midi synth track into an audio track that should play OK without major latency issues.

Now the trick is to record the other midi tracks without the "echo" midi track audio turned on... use the keyboard's on board sound to hear what you're doing..... The midi should record exactly where you play it. Now, bounce that track and repeat the process...... that is a work around that I have wondered about...... will it work? IDK..... I've started by getting a really nice interface, but it's worth a try.
