The new Cosmos TV show

Interesting thread on GS about Cosmos, with extensive participation by the guy who mixed it.

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/post-production-forum/913767-i-saw-cosmos-tv-narrators-voice-quality-all-over-place.html

A couple of interesting nuggets:
- he used VoG on the narrator's voiceovers (and I was under the impression it was useless!)
- one station in Oklahoma self-censored the mentions of evolution

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

We loved the show and are DVRing the series...however...I still think Carl's was better for its time. I shore do miss that ol feller.

As to Henchman's work I thought it was fine. Like he says it's not a day at the park doing this kind of work. We've done the same for lo these many years. We had to match location recorded dialog for the Cohen brother's True Grit, and got pretty dang close. But I can hear it plain as day when I watch. Sigh.

Strange that we still live in fear of the E word. Well, certain parts of the planet anyway. Imagine what it's like in a country where thoughts can get you killed.

Loving the series, but the new guy reminds me of a very brilliant lounge singer. Sorry Neil, just miss hearing Carl say "biwions and biwions"

I like the new show.  Tyson is pretty good.  Even if he isn't Carl Sagan, those are huge shoes to fill.  I'm glad they've remade/rebooted it.  With all the changes in science, it really deserves the update.

I once joked about that TV ad with my doctor. He said "it's not funny" and proceeded to explain what they do to you when you walk into the ER with a 4+ hour boner. I'll not describe it, because once you've heard it you can never un-hear it, much as I wish I could. Let's just say I've not joked about it since.

There's a story about Sagan that I'm reasonably confident is true.  Apple was developing a new operating system a year or two after the Cosmos series first aired, and the developers gave it the code name "Sagan".  They were contacted by Sagan's attorney who told them they were not allowed to use "Sagan" and that they'd be sued if they persisted.  So they changed the code name to "butt-hole astronomer".

Interesting.  I saw an interview Tyson as part of the hype for the new version.  As a teenager, Tyson met Sagan and spent a day with him.  He even had Sagan's autographed calendar which indicated the date of their meeting.  Tyson does, indeed, follow in the great man's footsteps.

So he intends to sue that food merchant and we'll all forced to buy butt-hole astronomer chicken from then on?

A seemingly random reference made in a single post can have huge implications in the course of the history of thread.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I watched episode three last night and realized there was something quite disconcerting about the show.  Don't get me wrong, I think it's up there with the very best of science programming that I've ever seen - I'm totally engaged.  But there are commercial breaks.  This show is *so* PBS-like that it only takes a minute or two to get into a no-commercials state of mind.  Every time there's a scene that fades to black, I don't even think of reaching for the remote control to turn off the sound of the commercial!
