The one thing we have'nt been able to fix......
.....after several months of chasing around this phantom, intermittent crash of the PCS-BusCM.dll module, we finally decided to ditch everything and return the source. A completely fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit SP1 and a completely fresh install of Sonar X3e and absolutely nothing else. No other apps, internet, virus protection, additional drivers other than the current audio, no onboard audio and completely disabled in BIOS, and all the Sonar installations done as admin with no 32 bit plugs anywhere! Not even the beloved Perfect Space ( which you don't find out until later that it's actually 32 bit. We were even thinking that there was possibly something corrupt about the original X3 download so we went though the entire download procedure again just to be sure it was a completely fresh install. And then did a 'vst reset and re-scan' just to be sure we didn't miss any steps. Even checked msconfig to make sure the ONLY thing starting up with windows was the audio driver, unchecked everything else. Brought the Studio to a complete standstill for 2 days while meticulously thought each step through, you all know how this goes lol. So the brand new install runs like a Maserati, smooth, fast, and stable as a rock on the most demanding of projects with loads of effects and tracks.... ....and then...BAM!! We literally could not believe our eyes!!! The same crash!!!! Unbelievable!! On a completely new system. It happens with the exact same frequency ( about twice every hour or so ). Only happens on the opening or saving of projects so far, or so it seems. I read through every one of Noel's post about the registration of the Shared Utilities/internal path and checked the registry to make absolutely sure those paths got written correctly. All there, all correct. That's about as thorough as I can figure an install to be and yet, there it is rearing its ugly head once more. It does not appear to be any one project specifically as it will happen opening one and then that one is fine but happen on another. We had never seen this error until we installed X2. It never happened on X1 or earlier, even with the heaviest of use and careless operation ( deliberately inserting busses durring playback, ect. ) And just to be clear, this is the exact same machine and components that X1 ran on. So far, this is the most pervasive problem we have ever had on any of our machines to date. A complete mystery so far....

One of the significant changes between X1 and X2 were the MS runtime libraries needed to run the application. These may need updating on the machine. May want to suggest this to tech support.

I was under the impression that the MS runtime libraries installed with each app or plug needed to be those specific versions because that was the version used during coding. No?? I have several separate instances of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 redistributable alone in Add/Remove Programs and many other versions as well from several years. Each installed by either Sonar, Ca2a, Concrete Limiter, ect.

In an ideal world this is the case. But they do get jacked up and when not right cause some fairly bizarre problems.

So do you suggest to update each separate version of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable ( 8.0.61001, 8.0.56336, 8.0.59192, 8.0.61000 ) or is there simply an update for all the 2005 versions, 2008 versions, ect??

Since you are already working with tech support, I would rely on their guidance. They know which versions are used by each version of SONAR.

I think for the moment, they are about as stumped as we are, and this is about as typical as you can make a Sonar installation really. There is literally nothing to conflict with lol

Just ran across this post From Noel, Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk] Do NOT uninstall the CS runtimes or you will break some application or the other. If its on your system some application installed it because it needs it! We install 2 flavors because we redistribute certain plugins that are not built by us. These plugins require the older runtimes. Additionally there might be multiple versions depending on which service pack is being used by the various vendors. Executable files in Windows now have a manifest inside it that identifies the specific version of the runtime that it was compiled with. If the runtime is not found the application will fail to launch. So do not remove any versions on your machine unless you really know what you are doing.
Hmm, this would indicate that the install needs that specific version even if its older.

I'm running the same Windows version and same Sonar version and have never seen this problem. Although admittedly I don't use the ProChannel much. Not that that helps you much, I just mean to say that it might be worth figuring out what is different about your machine. I guess you did run Windows Update until you had the latest everything?

1. Is Windows COMPLETELY up to date on all maintenance? 2. You indicate this error opening some projects. What happens in new projects started in X3e? 4. FYI, That module seems to be the PC4K S-Type Bus Compressor. 5. Does PCS-BusCM.dll exist in C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\Internal? 6. Can you download and run a free utility, called DependencyWalker, and send the results to me? I will send you a PM with my email address. (I will review and post the findings here, after looking at the log file you send me). DependencyWalker is a wonderful and free program that you can use to analyze Sonar, and it will go through and figure out everything that gets called from Sonar, and posts versions of detected components and such, presenting its findings in a really nice output report. Once you download it, click File>Open, and navigate to C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\SONAR X3 Producer, and double-click on 'SONARPDR.exe'. Dependency Walker will take a couple of minutes to analyze Sonar, and will produce an online report. Click File>Save As, and give it a name and save it with its default type of 'dwi'. Then, attach that to an email and send it to me - look in your Private Messages folder for the one I am about to send you, which will have my email address in it. Thanks, Bob Bone

My first thought on reading this post was "this is exactly the same machine". It may, or may not, be the cause of these issues, but there may be a conflict with the driver of another device, or peripheral, on your machine. I run the same CPU, same model m/board, but a different memory and audio interface so I don't feel I can be that much help, but I would definitely start looking at what device or peripheral you could swap out to start eliminating these as well. I feel your pain, these issues are real "tear your hair out" trials and I know how my heart sinks when I think I have the problem licked and then it rears its ugly head again. Will keep an eye on this issue.

Sorry to hear this is causing trouble. Filing the problem reports (sending the minidumps) is the best way for us to move forward on this. Support is still the best option. Be sure to provide any details they're asking for. Rest assured we'll be looking into the matter. Thanks for your patience. Keith

Thank you for all the help and ideas on this and Bob, thanks for you generous offer, will do. 1. Yes, this is Win7 64 Pro with all the latest updates as of yesterday. 2. This is a project that was created in X3e 3. Yes, thats correct. 4. the PCS-BussCM.dll is in the correct C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\Internal path. Keith, thanks for checking in and I continue to send the ongoing mini dumps to Dean as they occur.
We really use the Pro Channel exclusively now because of the powerful effects included. The puzzling thing is that X1 in all its incarnations ran flawless on the exact same configuration with many more potential conflict/apps installed than this ultra clean install. And to be clear, this isn't a similar configuration as the X1 install, its the same audio hardware and computer install ( bios, settings, driver versions, memory, video, cpu, hard drives, ect ) and the same order and version of plug ins. It always returns the same info each time on the fault report:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: SONARPDR.exe Application Version: 20.0.5.352 Application Timestamp: 5320c501 Fault Module Name: PCS-BusCM.dll Fault Module Version: 1.0.0.182 Fault Module Timestamp: 521d8bfd Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 0000000000005c17 OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 1f14 Additional Information 2: 1f148a24dfa4340065133386e53d5f6e Additional Information 3: fa70 Additional Information 4: fa70401bec3d3cf32402a08215af4102
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
As I understand it, c00005 is a kind of access violation dealing with the Runtime Library involved but beyond that, its all Greek to me. Have re-installed X3 several times but keeps producing the same result.
Again, very appreciative of the help and input here! The guys at Product Support are great and incredibly helpful at what, I'm sure, is a frustrating job and somehow they maintain clarity, these guys are true pros.

So before we go back to the very beginning and re-install Sonar x3 again on a completely blank Win7 64 bit system, just wanted to double check about the install order. The X3 download version installs ( X3a build 211 ) Can we go right from there to the X3e patch or do we need to do them consecutively?
