The original (old) Session Drummer

Hi,
This is a question for all of you "old guys".  I have just updated to Studio X1.  In the old versions of Sonar there was a midi drum program called Session Drummer which played midi drum patterns from a company called Drumtrax.  Is there any way that I could use those patterns in Studio X1?
Thanks,
Mack

Session Drummer, now on version 3 IIRC, is still there so I guess you should be able to.

Session Drummer 2 and 3 are a bit of a different animal than the original Session Drummer... It can still play midi trakcs (such as from Drumtrax), but the internal sequencing is much more limited... So you have to do things a little different...

A big difference between the original and the 2 versions since is that the original had no drum sounds... simply for sequencing so you need another sound source (synth/sample player) as well as midi data. the new versions are more about the kit (sounds) tho it still can load/play midi patterns.

When SD2 first came out I found I still needed/used SD1 as I didn't like the SD2 sounds and had sounds I like in another drum synth (DR008), so I continued to use SD1/DR008 until the release of SD3 which included the Stephen Slate drumkits.... I still use them both (Sizzle and Old Zep)... They are excellent (for me)...

I'd love to check out the Andy Johns and Neil Pert kits, but I'm too broke to be able to afford them (yet?) and I'm not too unhappy about it as the SS kits still work great for me... with a few situational issues...

Hi, Mack - Nostalgic topic, that very first version of Session Drummer.  It was a DXi which was hardwired to Cakewalk so that as soon as there was a version of Cakewalk that didn't include SD, you couldn't open it - it wasn't possible (as far as I could see) to get SD registered after the fact of installing a new version of Cakewalk.

But I experimented to see SD's MIDI patterns could be used - and they could, BUT they weren't practical to work with.  In that SD interface, you would dial up different variations of patterns, the way you do in the current SD, but the program was accessing just a segment of a larger MIDI file.  Without the interface, all you had were super long MIDI files which you could search through to find the various bits.

I used those a few times, searching and slicing, but it was too time consuming.

That's my experience with the original SD anyway.

    Hi Randy...

The way SD1 used large midi files with pointers indeed made them hard to use, but far from impossible. Easy enuf to load the midi pattern/clip and splice it into short segments which could then be exported and saved in that form...

    Not to be 'pushy' (?)...

SD1 loads fine into X1... the problem that happened with the release of SD2 was that there was a name conflict... that was corrected by Cakewalk with a replacement dll for SD1 (at that time) and it has continued to work for me... I just tested it again to be certain...

I'll guess to say that the updated dll is still available somewhere (if not already in the Sonar package)... If not, I'm sure I could find a way to "legally" get you a copy? .... or if Cakewalk doesn't mind I could make it available on my website's Cakewalk & Kurzweil Support page...?

That's right, Keni, those SD1 files weren't impossible to work with, I was just explaining how I ended up not feeling they were worth the hassle.  Maybe I should dig in again one of these days.

And thanks for the info on why SD1 was suddenly not available.  I never saw the replacement .dll for SD1.  That'd be cool if you could make it available - Seems like any registered Cakewalk user would have a legitimate reason to have it.

    Hi Randy...

I'll post a message here and see how Cake stands on this... I need their' approval before I can proceed. They may have it somewhere online, but they sure didn't make finding it easy if it is... I tried and couldn't find it...

Here's a link or two that might help. I haven't followed them all the way today...

    http://forum.cakewalk.com...m=1185504&high=SD1

This last one is probably your best starting point... until I find if I can send it. Note message #8 on the last link...

Thanks to all responders...Yes, I sure would like to continue using the "old session drummer" with X1.  It would be nice if Cakewalk could post step by step instructions about how it could be done.  I bought the Drumtrax library for $24.95 way back when.
