The search for "One Knob" to rule them all??? MixCentric
Well it looks like we have another "centric" plugin from Waves today. I purchased the VoiceCentric as it seemed to be a fairly nice and good sounding plugin to get some fast results I also used a discount voucher which sweetened the deal even more but the recent quick releases of PianoCentric and now MixCentric. Waves announces Greg Wells MixCentric I guess I am a little skeptical. As it seems you insert this on your "Master" mixbus and it proports doing some magic remixing under the hood. ;^) I guess there might be a place for this in your toolbox but these OneKnob approaches seem to have been released very quickly. Oh my precious.

My guess? Not only will it wind up as a bundle like the Chris Lord-Alge, Eddie Kramer, Jack Joseph Puig, Tony Maserati, et. al, bundles, it'll be discounted super-cheap in the not-to-distant future. I've been burned by Waves in the past (I basically have 2 CL-A bundle licenses; please don't ask), so... In-place edit: while checking the spelling of 'Maserati', what did I find? Geez, but Waves was fast with this one...the Greg Wells Signature Series! List: $349. On sale today for? $299. I put even money on the bundle being on sale for half that amount (or less), within 6 months. http://www.waves.com/bund...nature-series-overview I like the CL-A set the best; they're great for demos! I don't use any of the plugs in the other "celebrity" bundles, even though some are quite good (Kramer's and Puig's). No reason to. I mean, who else but Chris would include a "Cowbell" setting on his drums plugin? Looking forward to your review of all 3 plugs after you've had some time to use them! Thanks in advance!

When I got the email I wondered who would pay that much for a single knob plugin. I think the price would be more appropriate if they had two tabs on the plugin. One with the magic single knob, the other with the ability to make some tweaks. I halfway want to download a demo to hear what the thing does, but I also know I'd never buy it at anywhere close to those prices. of course the marketing says it is aimed at aspiring music makers (beginners), so I understand that. But most aspiring music makers I know don't want to spend $300 for a small set of tools.

To me that idea would really make the plugin more attractive. It sort of would be similar to what iZotope Ozone does with the Macro settings.

The effect pedal is maybe a pretty good analogy. They're mostly single function and can make you sound better . I'm more inclined to spend a few minutes learning what these one-knob plugins are doing and then do it myself, adjusting things to my particular situtation.

I demo'ed it last night and it does sound good. Seems sort of like a compressor/limiter/exciter rolled together. But for $150? Probably not.

These kinds of make-gooder plugins would have a lot more credibility if they could cite a single hit record made with them.

Who knows - without trying first - it could well be something quite good. I would, however, approach it with skepticism given the dubious manner in which it is advertised. I could easily duplicate the "demonstration" offered by Mr. Wells using a number of other tools. You can do it, too. Just bypass your master bus chain - if you've done anything right at all, it will sound worse, just like in the demo video.

Heck with the "make-good" idea. A mess is a mess will always be a mess. If the mix IS NOT a mess, then I have no need for such a plugin. If the mix IS a mess, there's nothing any plugin can do to fix it. What I DO have a need for is for quickly putting decent-sounding demos together. That's why I like the Chris Lord-Alge bundle. I put the appropriate plugin on each instrument/vocal track, starting with everything at unity and tweak from there. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I wound up with two licenses for this bundle, paying $79 for one and totaling out just under $100 for the other. If I forget about the screw-up, I paid less than $15 for each of the plugins. I've got some Waves plugins that I don't use, but these are great for demos or quick toss-offs. I have a feeling that you could do a decent mix with just these, but I haven't taken them that far yet. G.A.S. is a way of life, I've just got to accept that. For some reason, I've having a surprisingly easy time passing up these Greg Wells plugins. Maybe I've turned a corner! Yeah, riiiiiiight!

That sums it up for me. I didn't hear anything that I couldn't get with a combination of other plugins. I could, however, see it being helpful to someone who is very new to mixing with no idea of how to take a recording up a level.
