Not using a bass (or guitar for that matter) is NO reason to part with it

Interestingly, I've been wanting to get a bass (not the pro stuff you're logging around, but a cheapie) as I heard it's an easy instrument to play and always wanted to have one. Let me guess, the next thing you're going to tell me is that bass guitars now have 5 strings?

Can't really go wrong with a Squier P or J bass. Mines an old mid 90's Mexi made P I bought "almost new" for I think $400 at the time. It's been through HELL and back many times over and is still trucking. Unfortunately the damned pickup casing is busted in a way so the top side of the pickup sticks way up. The screw hole on the casing is busted so I can't screw the bugger back down. That was from some dum dum I loaned it to skateboarding around with it without a case and it inevitably went flying face down onto the concrete. Aside from that it's in great condition and seriously... this thing has seen some MILEAGE. The current "low" end P/J's are selling new for around the same price if not less. But personally I'd look for an older used one in good condition (likely same price or less) because I'm not sure about the quality of the current line. It's also really simple to replace the electronics too if you need an active pickup or whatever. If they were a houses I'd use the term "they have good bones". You... however likely know all this. lol

Thanks Beeps, that was helpful. I actually didn't know much about Squire P/J bass . Will definitely look at some used ones as well (when I'm actually ready to buy)......Uncle Sam is holding up my bass fix!

+1 on Squier, have a Squier Tele (that actually sounds WAY better imo than the Fender Tele I had untill then).Super stoked with my Squier PJ bass (Vintage modified series) that I bought new at a sale for 330.- The Squier Bullet and Affinity series are entry/starter guitars, but the other Squiers imo are propper instruments.

Bass is ridiculously fun to play and seriously... I think ever guitar player should own one and REALLY understand how a non guitarded bass player acts as a bridge between the drums and everythin' else. Essentially I think playing bass makes guitar players better. The trap to avoid falling into is playing bass "like a guitar player"... which really is the most difficult part I think moving from guit to bass. Things like over picking things (focus on the kick and the snare instead of the guit player's right hand) and resisting the urge to "double" the guitar riffs/licks. ya... i liek bazz...

Well said, Beeps. It's a different mind frame. For me it was natural, I often heard the Bass parts before I paid attention to the guitar parts. It definitely makes you a better rhythm player. Now....learning to sing and play Bass is yet another challenge.

Richard Pryor? OUCH. Please be more sensitive and have more regard for people's feelings. We don't need those sort of inflammatory comments. Playing bass and singing? Mark King. If this is a Craigslist ad for you selling a bass, Bapu, howsabout a pic? And a pithy description? I'm sure most of the Forumites have your entire collections all visually sorted, but alas not I. I think playing bass should be mandatory for all musicians. The bar for entry is pretty low. Is that a pun or not? I think it's a pun. Not really, though. And, while playing bass should be mandatory, lessons and instruction should not. It's much more interesting that way. -Tom
