Theme from "The University"

This is the theme song for a mythical television series about the students, faculty and community in and around a very traditional old world-style university. It is a dramedy, lol.

Seriously, this song started out very different, except for the "chorus" starting at 0:55, which has remained more or less the same in all of the versions that came before. The instruments have changed many times. This version "stuck" and really felt right.

Hope you enjoy and if you have any questions or feedback, I'll take 'em!

Regards,
Dan

I love cellos, it is one of my favorite instruments. When it comes to the strings, they're all just different sized versions of the same thing? From the Violin to the Viola, to the Cello, to the Bass. But something about the cello to me says "this is what they made this design for..." The others are all cool too.

Really nice saxamaphones too. How did you do the saxes? What SW was used to build all of this? It sounds really "really" good, well conceived, and well put together. Something to be proud of here Dan.

The sax is Embertone's Sensual Sax. It is extremely playable for these kinds of parts. Orchestral pieces are a mix of EWQLSO, JV2080 and Garritan Instant Orchestra; mostly in that order as far as number of parts. I really, really like EWQLSO. The rest of the parts are a mix of JV2080, Korg Triton and Omnisphere, along with my guitar and bass.

    Well it's put together masterfully.

I play samplemodeling (http://www.samplemodeling.com/en/index.php) Their stuff is like a fun night with your favorite actress (and I do mean a fun night...) But that Embertone part stood out to me and sounded good, and it's cheap!

I'll have to check out the samplemodeling stuff. It's on my list. So far, I've tried:

    * Supreme Sax - Nice, but fairly pedestrian samples. Also, it is rather thin sounding.
    * Garritan JABB3 - I like the horns and ensembles, but solo saxes are weak.
    * Saxlab - It's pretty tricky getting this to sound good without burying it in the mix.
    * Legacy VSL Tenor in Kontakt - Nice sax, but doesn't respond to pitch bend...so sad.
    * Embertone Sensual Sax - They advertised it like it was a prank, but honestly, it plays very well.

You will not be disappointed with Samplemodeling...

    They rock "hard."

Again, they are not cheap? But their stuff is "the best." I don't work for them? I make no money from them? I am just a very satisfied customer... You can check out their videos on youtube. If you don't have a horn player? You need Samplemodeling... And if you do have a horn player? They'd better be pretty darn good...

Nothing against your song or your sound though, it was really good.

(I'm just finishing a tune w/two Bari parts, a tenor, an alto and a soprano sax) I used the sax brothers from samplemodeling. It sounds like I have a horn section playing with me :-) Part of it is the articulations? How hard you're biting on the reed? How hard you're blowing? The rate and depth of your vibrato? If you're using a flutter tongue technique? etc...

    Hey Dan
The arrangement/flow of this piece is fantastic.  Great job on the mix separation.  This is a great example of your engineering/producer skills.  The mix space created and getting all those libraries, plus the live performance to sit in that space was perfect IMO. Once again a really GREAT piece of music/mix.  KUDOS!

Thanks Kev! It's getting easier to hear when a mix still needs work and what to actually do about it. Hardest lesson I've learned is that it is okay to revert to a previous version, lol.

Well done. It sounds anthemic. (good thing)

Nice samples in use because I thought everything sounded "real" on this computer/speakers.

Dan the Man!! Wow, this is awesome and right up my alley for sure. This is a totally awesome creative piece of work and I like your story concept that goes along with this. Wait it ended and I need to start it again. Great use of instrumentation and a great mix. This is exactly why I like doing this stuff. Glad I took the time to catch up after my vacation, as I would have totally missed this great sounding piece of work. Very, very nicely done. Keep them coming. Love it!!

Thank you John! I'm glad you enjoyed this. Still haven't started on the next one. Tried to this weekend and shut the DAW off after fiddling for two hours and...nothing. Lol. When the muse is ready, I'll be locked to the DAW for weeks, as usual.
