There we all were, digging a hole...

They are laying some lines the length of the road here. (fibre optic cable hopefully)

Yesterday my internet was out 8 hours straight while they were digging and has been coming off at regular intervals since.

Saturday morning a ditch but no workers.  Fair enough who wants to work on a Saturday?

So why then dig a trench on a Friday when nobody is going to be looking at it 'til Monday?

I've contacted my ISP and we've done a load of messing with a router that is already working perfectly just for the sake of it and our local tech support guy, in Delhi or wherever, informs me there are scheduled works in my area until Tuesday and I will likely have to live with my connection until then but to call back if I'm still having problems at that time, which I'm cool with too.

So how come some cat in India can tell me what is going on but the dig foreman parked in my car park can't?

Still I can get on here to rant during a window of opportunity even if I can't do much else on-line just now.

That's the main thing...

They installed fiber to our town some time back. It connects the little telco buildings.... but the "last mile" to the house is copper...and the outrageous price they want to charge me for "faster" internet.... they're out of their cotton picking minds.  It costs THEM nothing more for the higher speed but they sure charge a premium. OK maybe it costs them like a quarter cent more....

I had a phone company sales-rep call the other day... "Hey I want to save you some money on our new packages. ".... OK that sounds good.......

    OK, I'm listening.

After letting him ramble on for a few minutes and explain the costs & benefits of the "new cost saving packages" It was about $90 a month for the same speed I'm at now or $99 for the next speed up (before the taxes and fees are added of course) .... he made the mistake of asking what I currently pay on my "old plan".... I told him I topped out at on my current bundled package at about $86 a month max  ALL costs including Long Distance & taxes and fees... he suggested that I stay with the current plan...... YOU THINK?

wow seems one area we're cheaper in the UK - for broadband and line rental (inc free calls evenings and weekends) at the above speed (max 40mb) is around £30 - $45 per month.

Yeah, but were all afloat on the same little boat. Our entire infrastructure would likely be inadequate in some US states.

Maybe that's one reason. I've noticed it too and wondered why myself.  Another reason maybe that the suppliers largely piggy back on the same networks rather than set up their own to cover the same areas.

My current package with Talk Talk is pretty reasonable - £6.99 BB + £12.30 Line Rental a month. That's just under twenty quid for up to a theoretical 24 meg download and a 40GB limit per month.

I say theoretical because I'm at the end of a very small branch on the local exchange - it's actually down at about 5MB most of the time although we're promised that our area is to be updated to high-speed sometime this year or next.

The phone package itself is pretty reasonable with stuff like free caller display (which I believe BT still charges for) and free calls any time to other Talk Talk users.

I checked with the phone company and they wanted like $1000 to dig a trench and add an additional phone line into my house. I wanted to add an office and fax line in my office. Forget it I told them.

The next day the cable company knocked on my door and informed me they wanted to lay new lines into all the houses in our neighborhood. This would require digging a trench and laying the lines. I asked them if I could put my own phone line in with their cable line and they said "Sure thing".

I called the phone company back and told them I had laid my own line and please turn it on. They made a big to-do about inspecting my work which was up to code as it turns out.

The end of my trench story.

Except that, I was still mad at the phone company and a few months later switched to all cable on my phones and internet. Revenge is sweet when it comes to public utilities.

    Down In A Hole

Bury me softly in this womb
I give this part of me for you
Sand rains down and here I sit
    Holding rare flowers
    In a tomb... in bloom

Down in a hole and I don't know if I can be saved
See my heart I decorate it like a grave
    You don't understand who they
Thought I was supposed to be
Look at me now a man
    Who wont let himself be

Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' control
    I'd like to fly,
But my wings have been so denied

Down in a hole and they've put all
    The stones in their place
I've eaten the sun so my tongue
Has been burned of the taste
    I have been guilty
Of kicking myself in the teeth
    I will speak no more
    Of my feelings beneath

Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' control
I'd like to fly but my
    Wings have been so denied

Bury me softly in this womb
Oh I want to be inside of you
I give this part of me for you
Oh I want to be inside of you
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers (oh I want to be inside of you)
    In a tomb... in bloom
Oh I want to be inside...

Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul

There are, apparently, 2,000,000 pot holes currently in the UK (and no local council has the funding to fix them) so fixing the 4,000 in Blackburn ain't gonna happen!

    Upspeed has gone up 0.2Mb/s
