Hi all funny but Pro tools are getting carried away because they are introducing track lanes.
That is history for us sonar users.

I think they knicked how Sonar implemented freeze of instruments last year too, just producing audio on all outs that never contains anything but automation otherwise.
I think they could look further and do track templates like Sonar, and not this session data thingy.
Don't know if Cakewalk ever look at feature requests and did allow to save and restore data too, but template are very useful and well implemented.

Pro tools is not what it used to be. im not knocking it or anything. it is a good DAW.
but it used to be what every one used. (the so called: "Industry Standard")
not so much any more. im not sure where they failed, I could count a few different issues. (concentrating on other products, poor driver support for their other products)
but IMO, PT could have gone on to wipe out any other DAW on the market (Sales wise)
but they missed their opportunity. many other DAW's, including sonar have seemed to pass them in technology.

PT is to DAW's what iPhone is to cellphones. Good products overall, but their "Industry Standard" reputations and sales are due to some "brainwashing".....

I can think of several reasons... - Native systems becoming so powerful Avid's emphasis on external hardware became less important.
- Apple lowering the price of Logic to $199.
- Late with technology (e.g. 64-bit operation, non-real-time bounce).
- Specialized programs (Live, Reason) were optimized for functions Pro Tools didn't do well.
- Concentrated on audio and wasn't really up to speed on MIDI when virtual instruments hit.
- Confusion in the marketplace - Pro Tools HD, SE, LE, standard, M-Powered, etc.
- Fewer people looking to replace tape-based studios with something similar.
I needed to load a session in Pro Tools 10 yesterday (files from legendary funk/jazz drummer Mike Clark, how cool is that?). It was okay and did what it was supposed to do - allow me to render the files so I could load them into SONAR to create a loop library, which Pro Tools can't do.

I had a good chuckle when ProTools got Clip Gain a while back... like a decade after Sonar had it. Never mind that they still don't have a built-in 32/64 Bitbridge as far as I know..

Some things I think ProTools did right and every daw should have it. - want a synth on a track, just insert it in the plugin slot - very straight forward no massive amount of track types. - want to know where your plugin delays are at, just look at bottom of mixer and the current delay is there and a field to adjust by your own amount if you want that. Also the amount that very track is delayed due to different plugins. The visuall thing is great and makes you feel in control. There is a feature request somewhere on this for Sonar about 18 months ago from me I think. - pricing is very affordable today, $99 annually stay up on latest version. Spreadsheet guys really were blown off after overthinking what position PT had and the offensive approach they had is gone, stay on annual updates or buy new-thing.
