Good one Bob, nice to see and hear you back! Not too much to pick on here, sounds fantastic through headphones. Can't discern the bass too well, but that might just be my hearing. Brutal riffage sir!

Interesting mix (in a good way).

The vocal seem pretty small between the panned guitar chords.  But it works really well, the sonic equivalent of standing between two pillars.

    I don't think i'd change anything.

I hope you are well sir.
Sounds the biz - great hooky chorus. Guitars rule on this one.

Wow Bob, you just know how to write good catchy/rocking tunes!! Very nice mix/production and the guitar tones sounded very polished.....good stuff bro.

Just a side comment and more or less thinking out loud here (so please feel free to disregard): while listening to this (x4), during the chorus parts, I was thinking the bgv could be a little more fuller/bigger (when you sing "thin line, fine line" etc...).....
Going a bit further on this limb here .....(in my head) I could also hear during the chorus parts, some female voices singing "Aaaaahhh (at 1:29) & Ooooos (at 1:32)" might go well with the theme of "pleasure & pain"?

Of course, this might not even fit at all with the song or how you want it to sound, but it might be interesting to see how it sounds (even if it's just as an experiment).....could add some different flavor to it....IDK?

Anyway, this song is very good as it is and I do like it a lot!!

Geez.... I had to turn down my volume a little...

The mix is smokin' hot .   You've really punched it up.    And the song rocks - catchy chorus (as usual) and the guitars + vocals are balls to the wall.  Cool solo too.    Crazy or sane?  Not sure....

    Hi, James,

Thank you, Sir, for the warm welcome back, and for giving the song a listen and also your kind words and very good input!

I will definitely revisit the Bass EQ a bit when I'm tweaking this mix to see if I can squeeze out a little more definition, I always trust your very good ears because of the stellar quality of your mixes.

Very much appreciated, James, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend, my friend!

    Hi, Matt,

Major thanks for checking out "Thin Line" and for your valuable input and encouraging comments!

I was on the fence about the vocal bus volume, and ended up dropping it by 2 1/2 dB before I posted the song.  With your initial comment, and my good buddy Mesh down below, I'm wondering if maybe I over compensated and should bump the vocals back up just a touch to split the difference.

After long periods away from mixing, I always seem to have volume leveling problems between the different instrument groups and vocals, but, that's one of the reasons why I love this forum.  The input and observations from all of the people here always seem to point things out that I might be missing and get me back on track, moving in the right direction.

I just wanted to mention that you've got a lot of really cool songs on your website, I seemed to detect a bit of a David Bowie influence in some of your songs that I really like, great stuff, Matt!

Sincere thanks for giving this a listen, and for your grood observations, greatly appreciated!

    Have a good one!

Yay I found something to suggest.

That into line at the first break (0:43 - 0:51) could use a splash of verb? To me sounds too naked against the drums with the verb.

The Scorpions called, they want to know how you have done kick-ass guitars better than them.

Crits, not many, but drum programming might stand a bit more editing, for example around 2:08

Also, I'd vote for the vocal more up front in the mix - as is, it sounds a little like he's singing from behind the Marshall stack.  :)

    very very nice!

It's really great to see you back on the forum, and thank you so much for giving this a listen and your very encouraging comments!

LOL, you know it's really funny, that intro riff you mentioned that runs throughout the whole song, I had just changed my guitar strings on one of my PRS's and I was noodling around stretching them out to break them in, and that riff hit me like a lightning bolt to the brain instantly, along with the song title, power chord progression and vocal melody.  I've never ever really tried to write a song in my life.  They've always just hit me like a flash, everything at once, while I'm doing normal things like reading a book or news article, watching a movie or TV show, looking out a window or sitting in traffic, this time it was just stretching out new guitar strings!  It started when I was 13 years old, but I thank my lucky stars everyday since then.

Anyway thanks again for listening and commenting, truly appreciated, my friend!

Tonight at around 3:a.m. I'm planning on trying out your ideas about thickening up the chorus vocals, and also your idea about a background vocal pad, I've got a pretty high range and did the high harmonies above the female singers in several of my cover bands for many years, so I think I'll give it a try to see if I can fit something else into the pretty dense mix.  Hopefully, I'll have some sort of new mix incorporating everyone's suggestions posted tomorrow or the next day.

Sincere thanks for always listening and contributing great input and ideas on my stuff, I'm truly grateful for your observations and suggestions!

Hey, Ed, what's happening, buddy?  Hope you're doing great!

LOL, As agent Maxwell Smart used to say, "Thanks, I needed that!".   Since I first started mixing this song, there was something odd nagging me about it, (NOT a NagBap!) but I couldn't for the life of me put my finger on it!  You dug deep and pointed it out to me, and BAM!!! that was exactly it!  Later tonight I'm going to stick a send on that "bone dry" intro guitar riff track that runs throughout the whole song, and shoot it to my guitar reverb bus.  Man, sometimes it's the simple little details that get lost in the big picture of a mix that can drive you crazy!  I should have the revised mix addressing everybody's input posted by 4 or 5 a.m. East Coast time.

Seriously, I can't thank you enough, something in the mix was driving me crazy and I just could not detect what it was until your comment.  It's that kind of observations and attention to details that makes this forum such a valuable tool and great place to keep learning this stuff!

Mucho gracias, Bapsi, 'Yer a true gentleman and a scholar!

    Have a great night!

    Mix # 2 Up! 5-6-16

Major thanks for all your input and suggestions, truly appreciated, you guys rock!

For this mix I re-tweaked the bass guitar EQ to try to wring out some more definition.  Then I tried to thicken up the chorus vocals a bit without raising the volume too much, by recording two doubles one of the lead vocal and one an octave lower, then threw a distortion plugin on them for a touch of grit and EQ change, panned them dead center between the wide panned chorus harmony vocals, and then brought them up just barely audible below the main vocal.  I'm hoping that did the trick.  Sorry, Mesh, old buddy, I tried singing a higher range, 2 part vocal harmony pad, and it sounded okay, but I couldn't get it to fit in with the other elements in that busy chorus section.

I also took our buddy Bapu's dynamite catch on the bone dry guitar drone riff, and routed it with a send to my guitar reverb bus, and then lowered the track volume on it about 2 1/2 dBs to make up for the added gain from the reverb.

Sincere thanks to everyone who took time to listen and provided input and observations, and please let me know if you have any other ideas or suggestions!

    Have a great weekend!
    Bob

Hi Bob, I have to tell you man that I listened to this song quite a few times this morning......not necessarily for any critiques, but rather coz it just rocked my socks off!!
No worries about the suggestions not working out.....this is a solid song with a clean/clear mix, and I love that in your face heavy guitar/vocals!! You really should send this to your local radio station . Very catchy tune my friend and the remix was done very well.....song is still lingering in my head.

it's like a heavier version of 'thunderstruck'
    rockin',
    nice heavy mix.
any mix comments are nit pickin',
but i'd love to hear the vocals bone dry.

    Hey, Tom,

How's it going, brother?  Hope you're having a Rockin' week!

Major thanks for lending your excellent ears to this one for me, and for your good input, suggestions and words of encouragement!  Love the good old Scorpions, saw them 8 or 9 times back in the 70's and 80's, and did a ton of their songs in my cover bands over the years!

I actually played the drums on my Yamaha pads for this one (quite slowly and sloppily, LOL), but I actually meant for that skipped beat at 2:08, trying to insert a pause, but maybe too long?  I touched up the drum timing and used groove quantize to randomize velocities a bit on Mix #2, hopefully it's a little better now.

Also, as per your suggestion, as mentioned in my remix comments above, I tried to thicken up the chorus vocals a little bit for the new mix to get them back in front of the good old Marshall stacks.

Sincere thanks, Tom, I always look forward to and truly appreciate your always good input and observations on my stuff, the comments and suggestions from you and our fellow forum members always have a great impact on improving my mixes!

    Have a good one, buddy!

How's it going, buddy?  Hope you're having a great week!

Thanks so much for coming back again to check out the remix and your continued input and support!

Your excellent suggestion about thickening up the chorus vocals seems to have worked out really well for me on this, even though I went about it in a weird way, and the second idea about the higher range vocal pad was also a great idea, but after singing the harmony parts, it was just a little to much to squeeze into the already dense mix during the thicker chorus.  But, it was still a great idea, and I'm glad I took the time to try even if it didn't work out for this particular song.

Thanks again, Mesh, greatly appreciate your good ears on my stuff!

    Have a great night!
    Bob
