Things on TV that really annoy me :-(
- 4:3 footage zoomed to fit 16:9
When using archive footage in a documentary, why on earth do they insist on zooming the original 4:3 picture so it fits the 16:9 widescreen format the documentary is made in. We're not stupid. We know they didn't have widescreen back then. Just show the footage in its original aspect ratio with black bars on either side. When you zoom in, aside from losing the top and bottom of the original footage, you also magnify the poor quality of it and make it annoyingly blurry. I recently watched the (otherwise) excellent documentary about Dads Army and the constant use of incredibly poor quality zoomed clips made it very difficult to watch after a while. - Talking Animals
Real animals don't talk. They're not human. Trying to make them look as if they are conversing with each other never works for me. I'm just not sure whether I dislike it more when the animals just 'look' at each other while someone does the voiceover, or when it's obvious that they've desperately tried to edit the animal's random mouth movements to make it appear that they are talking. Obviously, this doesn't apply to cartoons. - Weather reporters that feel the need to get all 'emotional' about the forecast
We've all seen the annoying buggers looking all upset because it's cold, or it's going to rain. What!? I couldn't care less. It really doesn't 'disappoint' me in any way whatsoever if tomorrow isn't going to be nice. If it's cold, I'll put on something warm. If it's raining, I'll take an umbrella. Which reminds me - STOP TELLING ME WHAT TO WEAR you ignorant pillocks. And another thing, they're not proper forecasters anymore (like Bert Ford), they're just presenters reading a script. - Advertisements that change the words of well know songs
It doesn't work. It's not big and it's not clever. If you do this, I will definitely NOT buy your products. Listen to the incredibly annoying Confused.com adverts to see what I mean. - Extended repeats
When they screen Have I Got News For You or QI, the show is always edited down to half an hour. Yet when they repeat it the following night, they always screen a 45 minute edit. JUST SHOW ME THE LONG VERSION IN THE FIRST PLACE. - Noel Edmonds (specifically on Deal Or No Deal)
Oi Edmonds, despite your repeated and pathetic attempts to convince anyone who'll listen of the benefits of "the power of positive though" and sh1te such as "cosmic ordering", it just simply isn't true. In fact, some clinical studies have shown that 'positive thought' actually works in exactly the opposite way. And another thing Edmonds... For the last time you bearded cretinous dwarf, THERE IS NO SKILL WHATSOEVER IN CHOOSING A BOX AT RANDOM. And why don't you also stop talking gibberish about probability. Stop saying complete crap like "What are the chances of the quarter million being in that box again today" and trying to make it sound like the chances against it are astronomical when they clearly are not. Mind you, one cannot moan about his bouffant and tidy beard................... oh, yeah. - Using backgrounds to display facts
Oooh look how clever I am. The bloke on the news is reporting about some housing shortage and I've displayed a graph of the data so it fits neatly on the wall of a house. I even got the perspective correct. Well not quite. Or the news reporter is describing current educational standards. I know, I'll display the information on a blackboard. NO. STOP IT. You smug pricks.

Stretched aspect ratios annoy me as well. Systems respond differently to the ratio information, I guess. On my other system when I'm watching old TV-series, they are 4:3, and only the commercials come wide-screen. On the other system, if I change the aspect ratio to 4:3, the commercials come in 16:9, and after the commercials the program continues in 16:9. I hate it. The stretching also decreases the picture quality noticeably.

I have a shorter list. Commercials/Advertisements get the best of me. The nice thing though is that with a DVR you can FF through them. Not just the commercials but the repetitive commercials. They show the same commercial multiple times in the same show....for goodness sakes at least give me some variety. Closing a segment just before you get to hear what you've been sitting there waiting to find out for the last 15 minutes. Don't think I don't know they do that on purpose. Then the juicy thing you waited to hear isn't as juicy as you thought it was. Any show involving ghosts or sasquatch or UFOs that portend to be getting to the bottom of something never does. Blah blah blah blah commercial, blah blah blah blah, commercial, rinse repeat show over....and I'm paying for this. I have seriously considered getting air TV...forget the cable. In my case over 150.00 a month for a bunch of mindless muckety muck.I get that for free here:)

- Obviously scripted 'conversations' on the news
The presenter asks an expert correspondent a series of interesting questions that have obviously been scripted in a vain effort to make it look like they're actually having a conversation. Just let the correspondent tell me the facts - simples.

Commercials that are interesting or funny the first one or two times they're broadcast. The disagreeable parts is when they air them 3-4 times an hour for six months after they get boring. "Scan & pan" instead of letterbox formatting. a. The panning looks artificial and mechanical. b. Two characters each at opposite edges of the screen are rarely on-screen at the same time--even while having a conversation. Make-up artists who didn't make a proper adjustment to HD. They simply used heavier make-up which tended to attract more attention and exaggerate personalities who weren't "ready for HD".
Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys? X2(X3 pending hardware upgrade), Emulator X2, E-mu 1212M, Virtual String Machine

Might be just a UK thing, but I hate the volume goes right up when the ads start as if to make you pay attention. Totally counter productive as I always turn it down lower than it would have been had they just left it at the same level. Also, the way that they have now made almost all channels have the ads on at the same time so that switching to a different channel for a few minutes to avoid them is almost impossible without having to endure the tripe that is usually on the BBC (no-ads allowed channels for the benefit of non-Brits).

Not only audio volume issues with commercials but movie mixes are nuts too. Soon as the action scene starts the volume is just to loud. Turn it down and then have to turn it back up for dialog. Audio mix and having to pay for "packages" are really my only gripes. And really I don't watch much anyway. Most all of the time I spend in front of a TV is watching a new DVD. If not for the family I'd trash the dish. I spend over $150.00 a month for it and mainly for it to just be there when somebody does want to watch it. If I paid only for a few channels that we may watch at least I'd feel it was a fair deal. Currently it's a rip and waste of money IMO.
