Think I've gone into training overload

Over the past two weeks have watched so many videos on mixing, recording, using sonar, eq, compression... Now when I listen to music all I see in my head are tracks, bounding meeters and compressors.

Heheh. Yeah that'll happen, man. The thing that drives me the most crazy is getting the sample tunes in tutorials stuck in my head for days on end. Those buggers just lock in there and won't let go. lol

Yeah, The Devil Goes Down or whatever it's called. Not a bad rocker and that was a pretty good vid. I'm working the the Mix 101 vid and it's some bubblegum pop but he deals with acoustic guits, vocals, piano, etc which interests me. I'll warn you right now that if you end up going through the 101 series be aware that the lengthy drum segment ends up being a very plastic sounding pop drum kit. It's not a useless drum mixing tut but I get the impression you're more into rock so don't do what I did and waste a ton of time writing everything down. Skip to the end of the drum segment to see how it sounds before making a major time investment. I'm a little annoyed actually because I just spent my entire afternoon dissecting it. Ugh.

That series is still worth a watch though for other reasons. Cheers.

+1....one of Brian Lee White's mixing courses on Lynda.com has a really nice track with a beautiful female vocal as the example material. I had it in my head for weeks and get warm fuzzy feelings when I think back to it now.

I can't do more than 2 or 3 videos in one night. I have some ADD thing going on and my concentration wanes dramatically after about 30 minutes.

Hi, sharke. Yeah, I try to stay focused but I need lots of breaks. I'm starting to go a little antsy already and it's only been a week of doing the G3 stuff. Gotta learn as much as I can before the month is up though. This current series is turning into a bit of a waste of time. I thought it was going to be a little more concise and cover more general fundamentals but it seems very specific to the track being mixed. More like someone handed the guy a tune to work on and he just turned on the camera to record him working. I've picked up a couple things but it's all pretty scattered for something labeled Mixing 101. Oh well. It was free so I can't complain. Hoping the other mixing vids are a little more helpful.

    Cheers.

Every now and then, I get either the background music or the project song from Charles Dye's Mix It Like A Record stuck in my head for a few days.

I've watched those DVDs in 2006 or 2007 IIRC.

Then you may want to stay away from this

One major long video. No chapters to break things up. just one long video. Plus the guy who is presenting is about as interesting as watching grass grow.  I understand he's very Sonar savvy and he does seem to know his controls and plugins, but damn... Listening to him is sleepy time.

I really liked the one by Kenny Gioia.

In fact, I had already purchased that before I got Sonar. Actually, I had already purchased SEVERAL of the videos before getting Sonar and my 30 day pass.

I think that's Fast Biker Boy's handiwork. I think I saw him mention there are chapters. Same thing happened with the Anderton vids. Try using QuickTime or something other than Media Player to watch it. Not sure why the newer WMP versions are so stripped down.

There ARE ways to break up this video?  Man, I hope it works in other players cuz this is pure pain.

Yeah, try it out in QuickTime like I said. That was the fix for the Anderton X1 stuff but I don't own Karl's vids yet. I've watched some of his youtube stuff and I kind of like his dry english style. He just gets to the point. I've been cramming for like a year now so I don't really have the patience for too much piddling around, yanno?

I'm gonna be starting that Mixing Rock series tomorrow myself. Just thought the 101 would be a good way to round out the fundamentals beforehand but it was not what I expected at all. Very specific to the sample song which was not a very standard recording. Quite odd.

    Cheers.

Heh, I watch a lot of training videos at double-speed using Windows Media Player.  It doesn't cause the sound to chipmonk, but I don't get bored having to learn at "someone elses" speed.  My ADHD doesn't let me concentrate on one thing for too...  SQUIRREL!!!

Hey Craig, yep I know... My mind starts to drift quick. I had no idea you could watch a video at double speed.  I've never heard of such a thing, now you got me wanting to go home and try it out.

I think you will like it. Of all the videos I've watched and own, he's been my favorite person to listen to.  He uses Pro Tools but it all still applies.
I have his Reaper stuff as well.  I was using Reaper before purchasing Sonar.
