Thinking about repainting my Les Paul

I painted it about 25 years ago with a watercolor, then 30 coats of thin (cheap) laquer. I was a noob with the clearcoat, and overdid it. It was gummy for about 5 years! Anyway, it's finally hardened. I have been thinking of doing a 2 or 3 color burst instead. I went through a phase of doing custom motorcycle painting, so I can do a quality job now. This was originally a gibson factory reject, and it has no real value other than a nice player. I had to fix the outer binding, and set the neck, but that was it. The rest was just prep/paint. The woodgrain isn't spec'd for a natural sunburst, but I was thinking of doing possibly a center yellow, outer orange/red, and the very outside a bright blue.

Anyway, looking for opinions on if I should just jazz it up as is, or alternative finish ideas

You know, I like the orange with the sun and the green with the people. I'm not wild about the blue part. I'd probably try to put a nice finish on what you've got. I've sure never seen one like it. I'm starting to understand the blue with the fish. This thing is different. OK, I like it! Is there any way to redo that finish without losing the painting?

What's wrong with "regular" colors like black or red?

Regardless, anything would be an improvement over this eyesore.

Yeah, I have a love/hate relationship with it!

But this guitar is a canvas to play with...red and black are boring.

When the hardware and pick-ups are on it, it looks kind of cool...but I'm tired of it for sure.

Your art on the guitar obviously represents something you felt 25 years ago Ron. Possibly the choice is down to this; Do you feel differently about the guitar, and your art, nowadays? In which case, time for a change, or, if you feel the same, or perhaps just want to hold a piece of your past into the present day for the memories and feelings it invokes, then leave it as it is.

I have an American 73 Strat I bought second hand as an 18 year old in 1978 from Frank Hessy's in Liverpool, where The Beatles got all their gear originally. it cost me everything I had, it now has road wear, scratches dings etc, but that guitar has followed me through all the ups and downs of my life, at one point it was the only instrument I owned and it moved with me in the front passenger seat of my car on a couple of occasions when every possession I had in the world was in the car with me. I could not imagine being parted from that particular guitar because of what it represents to me and my life. How do you feel about your Les Paul Ron? Let your feelings dictate, it's what makes the music real.

Wooks, I can understand where you are coming from with the natural wood, it can be beautiful and a statement in it's own right. In fact my 73' Strat I referred to in my previous post is natural. However peoples own individual artistic statements can also speak for themselves, and Ron's 25 year old sun and seascape communicates something about the younger and present day Ron that I am sure comes out in his music.

I imagine your guitar's look lovely too however

    Ron,
You may have no choice but to go with an opaque finish. Watercolor is a highly pigmented stain, and it has probably penetrated fairly deep into the wood. You can dissolve the lacquer with mineral spirits, but it will probably have little if any effect on the watercolor. To completely get rid of the watercolor, you will most likely have to sand off a fair amount of the veneer, which may not be a good plan.
At this point, I would lean toward a solid color, or sunburst pattern with opaque colors. This seems in line with your original thoughts.

    +1

some things are best left untouched.. I'm not a guitarist.. but I'd put it back to it's original state..
at the time I'm sure it was a good idea.. but hhmm dunno.. it's a bit like putting go faster stripes on a car

what Robert said about the paint being in the wood. if you stripped it back and it looks bad, then you'd have to cover it up some how..

In the 60s I was playing at night and working in a Columbian guys wood veneer shop. I took and old "woe is me" 50s telecaster and veneered it with an ultra exotic wood front and back.. Man was it great. I wish I had it now!

If you do go for a colour or burst finish this stuff here is the answer for stopping the water-colour (or anything for that matter) bleeding through without resorting to grinding it down.

    http://www.zinsser.com/product_detail.asp?ProductID=10

It's a shellac base so it's gentle and you can cover it with any type of finish you like.

As much as I'd like it to be a natural finish, it "wood" just be too much work, and the wood on this guitar was never spec'd to be natural. It has a pretty crappy grain to it. The only way it could be done is with a veneer or wrap. If I was dropping the dough for a wrap...it would be carbon fiber all the way!

I have a Gibson SG (1969) that was a beautiful red sunburst. It was stolen 2 times, and when I got it back ( yeah...long interesting story on the 2 thefts and returns) after the second theft, it was dinged up pretty bad..... no serious gouges to the wood but the finish was in bad shape. I stripped it down and painted it white. It looked really good...for a short period of time. White gets dirty real fast when gigging full time. So ....... since I had another guitar (bought it after the first theft) I decided to strip it down again. So, down to the wood with sandpaper. After thinking about what I wanted to do, I simply decided to finish it natural. I don't think I even used a stain..... just a clear polyurathane finish. light sanding, another cost.... let dry...repeat. I think there's about 4 or 5 coats of cleay poly on it. You can see the pics on my website.

I like the beauty of the natural wood grain......

well, better that you painted your guitar than a pet or a child i think the opaque sunburst idea is probably going to work the best.
