Guitarhacker, I'm a little curious now. I don't think I need a battery. But I'll do you lamp test to see. Anyway, where does one get a replacement battery? Thanks, Jan

@ robo   you can buy a manual transfer switch from most electric supply stores,,, ( not Lowes or Home Depot) and an electrician can hook it up. You connect the generator with a custom cable, then simply "throw the switch handle" to disconnect the mains and waaaa laa you have generator power.

I have that custom connection in my shed. All I do is shut off the big power users like the hot water heaters, the HVAC units, and the 200 a main, which also acts like my disconnect to the power company...and flip the "generator breaker" in the main panel to the ON position and I'm good to go.

@ old 55   You can buy the batteries for UPS units at most Batteries Plus+ stores.  Just carry the old one and they will match it up.  Man, I do business with my local BP+ store since I can easily drop in to pick up and drop off old batteries for recycling and they have every battery you could want

I plug my generator in the same way that Herb does. One word of caution,if you plug in directly to your panel the main breaker MUST be off. I have read of electrical workers being electrocuted from back fed generators....second thought you never heard either of us mention this....I would get the switch if your not very familiar with A/C panels and high voltage.

I also have a small battery inverter and when I replace ther batteries in it I'll probably shop for lithium batteries as opposed to lead acid batteries. They last way longer and charge faster.

An average computer UPS with everything plugged in will give you a reasonable amount of time to boot down your computer safely. This is the only reason I have one. Not intended for extended use. Just enough time to close a file and shut down.
