Thinking of getting a UAD 2 quad

I'm thinking of getting a UAD 2 quad in a couple of months and so wanted to ask the age old question is it worth it?  Especially since you will still need to get a bunch of plugins after words.

Thoughts?

It's definitely the way to go with UAD plugs becoming bigger and bigger chip hogs.  I've got a Duo and Solo and one UAD1 in my box and never run out of room...but I don't use UADs as my only plugins.  You might also take a look at the new Apollo interface which comes with either a Duo or Quad installed.  It looks pretty sweet.

Yeah, I've got a pretty good amount of other plugins.  Several of which I blame on you   In particular sound toys, and softtube.  That being said, I've had my eye on a UAD 2 system for a while, and think my wife will relent in a bit.   But I'm want to make sure it's REALLY worth it.

    Yes. It is worth it.

    And so are the plugs.

I'm partial to the Harrison and Helios EQs. Studer is excellent.

Oh heck they're all great. The 224 is equal to Valhalla Room (IMO) but since I have Valhalla the 224 may never actually be purchased.

I have two Quads but so far I've not really stressed out the second one.

The only thing I would warn against is buying their plugs sort of willy nilly as I did when I first got the UAD system.  While they are all good...there are some you may find (as I did) that you end up never using at all.  Be careful.

Plugs I still use all the time

    Fairchild
    LA2A
    LA3A
    1176
    Fatso
    4k Buss Compressor

    Harrison (always.....always)
    Helios
    Cambridge
    Neve 1073

    Neve channel strip
    SSL channel strip

    Precision Limiter

    DreamVerb
    RealVerb
*OOooops...forgot about my beloved EMT Plate 140 and EMT 250!!!

    Dimension D
    Boss Chorus

    Cooper Time Cube

    MANLEY MASSIVE PASSIVE....A MUST HAVE!!!!

Would love to have the Lex 224

All others see moderate to little use for me as they have been supplanted by other plugs.  I have a handful that I wish now I'd never purchased...not that they aren't good and wouldn't be useful to almost anyone...just that I find myself never using them.

    Choose wisely.

+1 on getting a UAD Quad or even better (as others have suggested here) get an Apollo with a Quad built in.
I only have a UAD2 solo and I need more, so I plan on upgrading to either a quad or Apollo-quad next year.

Does anyone know what the projected prices will be with the Apollo's?

If you have the money definitely get the quad.

I love the limited number of UAD plugs I have. The ones I use on everything are Pultec & Harrision EQs, DBX VCA comp, and the two EMT reverbs. There are many others I've liked when demoing but can't justify buying. If you wait for the twice yearly sales you can get some great bargains.

I own a Quad card and glad I bought it.  The Precision Buss Compressor and Precision Limiter are two of my go-to plugs when setting up a song for mixing.

I'm going to be looking at a new audio interface soon (current one is PCI not PCIe) and when I have to I'm going to heavily consider the Apollo Quad.

    ...RealVerb
This is a useful reverb and it comes free (i.e. included) with the card.

I have a UAD-1e and some of the free plugins have become go-to items for me, e.g.:

    DM-1 Delay Modulator
    RS-1 Reflection Engine

These particular plugins are easily overlooked, as they are intended to be components of a channel strip, but can also be used separately.

So it sounds like everyone is pretty much voting the same way.   I wonder when the 64bit will come out though.

I'm thinking of getting a UAD 2 quad in a couple of months

If the past two years is any indication, UA will probably have a killer UAD-2 deal going on come late Spring or
early Summer. For the past two years, UA has run a (3) month promotion (last year it ran July-Sept), whereby if you
purchase a new UAD-2 card you got up to (3) premium plug-ins free. The UAD-2 QUAD promo included the EMT-250,
Massive Passive EQ & Studer A800 free ($897 value). I suspect UA will offer a similar deal in 2012, as well.
If you can swing it, get a QUAD Flexi which includes a $500 plug-in voucher to purchase any plug-ins that you want.
Depending on where you buy a new UAD-2 card, you only pay 40-60 cents on the dollar for the extra $500. If UA is
giving you extra plug-ins and plug-in vouchers you might as well take it! So if you had purchased a new QUAD Flexi
(around $1500-1600 street) last Summer you would have got back $1397 in extra plug-ins & vouchers. At that point,
you are only paying a few hundred dollars extra for the QUAD card and the included plug-ins (LA2A, 1176LN, Pultec,
1176SE, RealVerb Pro, CS-1). If you happened to already have any of the promo plug-ins, UA exchanged the retail value for additional plug-in vouchers. Use your non-expiring plug-in vouchers during one of UA's frequent plug-in sales and save even more.

I am a bit biased, as I have been using UAD plugins for the past decade. I purchased my first card (UAD-1 Mackie)
back in 2002 and except for some select native plug-ins, I primarily use UAD for most FX. But, if you are into hardware emulations of classic/vintage gear, UA certainly has the most varied and extensive plug-in catalog available and their plug-ins are top notch. In addition, the UAD-2 cards play well with SONAR X1.

All we know about UAD 64bit plug-in compatibility is that it is happening in 2012 and will be a free update for registered/licensed users. Personally, I don't think we will see the update, until later in the year and it will probably be v6.4 (get it).

    Cheers,

    Billy Buck

I'm fortunate enough to have a UAD2 solo.

    My current plugs are the

    LA2A
    1176
    SSL E Channel Strip
    SSL 4k Bus Comp
    Precision Bus Comp
    Trident A Range
    Little Labs IBP

Plus Realverb, Pulteq and the Channel Strip including the excellent seperate modulation plugs Kev mentioned that came with it.  I use them all, all the time and will pretty much max out the card often unless I'm careful.  I'd probably happily get by easily without limits with a duo, but if you want to use some of the later, bigger, more resource hungry plugs then the quad would be the way to go.

I love my little UAD stash.

I went through a phase where they were all I was using for compression but over the last couple of years I have moved to outboard. They do have great compressors however i.e. 1176, LA2A, Distressor, Fairchild etc. Some of my favorite are the EQs, Delays & Reverb. The Plate 140 is a great plugin in. The Harrison is amazing. The SSL strip, the buss compressor and the Studer are extremely good as well. A great education in learning what gear can do is found in the UAD2 product.

If you have the patience and the money, the Apollo is the way to go in my mind. Great AD/DA, 8 channels in and out for outboard or mixing OTB. That is going to be a great piece of gear.

I have a UAD2 Quad and Mackie UAD1. So of the best purchases I ever made. The Studer is amazing! As are many of the plugs. I also have the Waves Mercury bundle but the UADs see the bulk of usage. 2¢...
