Thinking of vacationing in Maine just because...
It's hot and humid here... we're thinking of a quick escape but we've been visiting our regular spots a bit too frequently. The idea of Maine came up... mainly because we aren't very familiar with it? What's it like? I want to avoid suburban homogenization as much as possible... and can get plenty of that just about every where. Day hikes, driving in nice scenery, and picnics in nature are what we are looking for. Any tips or suggestions? Thanks!

If I just wanted to get away to the north I'd just start driving and turn whenever I felt like it. I'm sure not going to make a recommendation...if something goes south you're not blaming me! I have quite a bit of vacation time left so I decided to turn this month into 4 day work weeks. This one has been great so far. My family went to CO and NM - naturally I miss them but the time has been great other than me trying to enjoy my cooking....I tried once but it was sandwiches after that mess.

Thanks. We've done the no plan thing many times... and still sort of try to go with a very flexible hybrid travel plan. It seems like sometimes we spend more energy than we'd like to finding a place to sleep. Sandwiches. Yum!

Sorrento is my favorite spot in Maine. It is across Frenchman Bay from bar harbor. It has a beautiful harbor and view of Acadia national park. It has scoodic point to the north with beautiful surf. Black hills to the west . Tonk lake near by too. Do you sail? There are no stores or hotels so you will need to rent a summer cabin from someone. Our house if in budget.

You culd also escape this: Then there is this: " Ah, the dulcet sounds of summer in northern Maine: the haunting cry of a loon across a still woodland lake; the song of a robin as she approaches her nestlings; the steady breeze whispering through a stand of mature pines; the incessant, brain-numbing whine of mosquitoes, black flies and moose flies."http://bangordailynews.com/2011/06/16/news/aroostook/stinging-biting-bugs-part-of-northern-maine-reality/ It's always something... I guess if you stay on the rocky, wind blown shore you will be OK! FWIW, ever since I took a trip to northern Ontario... (it was a night of camping in Kapuskasing in August)... I no longer complain about mosquitos. We don't have any compared to them, you literally could not breathe without breathing them in in the evening. Just come to N GA, the humidity hasn't been too bad, there are no gnats, and it really has not been very hot. In NE GA this week it was 61 in the morning one day... Blairsville or Rabun. A friend who was there mentioned it. Maine is a LONG way to go. If I were going to drive that far it would be to the U.P. of Michigan, or over into Canada to Superior. Last time I was there, in the early 90s we went out to a point on Superior just above the U.P. there were waves at least 10' and people wedged into clefts in a cliff fishing... beautiful and weird. It was just west, out from Sault St. Marie at Gros Cap... an amazing place. I know you're probably just talking... but anyway, it is a nice place. It was this place: Where the wave is blowing up is where a couple of people were lodged into the cliff fishing...

We can barely walk out side at our house right now because of the Mosquitoes. We just drove in to tow and bought a book about touristing in Maine. Thinking happy thoughts!

Ok, Maine and Ontario just got scratched off my list of places to visit. I seem to have a high sugar content in my blood which makes me a delicacy for mosquitoes. No thanks! However, I just bought one of these bug-zapping rackets: And had a lot of fun when about 3-400 gnats got into my bedroom last week.

We are headed up to the North Shore of Minnesota this coming Thursday, got a cabin up on the Gunflint Trail for a few days. I can't wait to get out of the Texas heat. We held off until August in hopes that some of the Mosquitos would be gone.
Also looking forward to a little fried walleye and Moosehead.

Hi Julien, Yes, we spend a lot of time in North Georgia and West North Carolina. We visited Lake Michigan and Wisconsin last summer too. We're thinking of flying into Bangor, renting a car, and then just doing it for a change of pace and curiosity. Hoping to do the NW Pacific coast the next year. So if anyone is reading... I am eager to learn about Maine. A cottage near Acadia seems great... especially something close to a great breakfast diner. We'd also like to go a little further Down East so we're looking for places to consider up there too. all the best, mike

Vermont and New Hampshire are pretty nice places. Then there's always Cape Cod...... (granted that was a long time ago for me) Pick a lake and book a cabin. Don't know bout the miskeeters though.

Nantucket is nice. I lived there for a year. Absolutely stunning scenery and beaches and some of the nicest sunsets in the north east. Plus there's always a nice breeze. Can't recommend it enough.

My wife went to Maine about 20 years ago when she had to visit Boston for some class. A short drive it seems. She said they have lobster resturants there like we have fried chicken resturants... and they are cheap but don't expect iced tea.. they do not serve it there. In Ontario if you order french fries you don't get ketchup, you get vinegar... which is really good! J

If you order "french fries" in Britain, you get ketchup AND vinegar AND curry sauce.

If you order "french fries" in Britain, they'll look at you funny. Once you describe what you want, then you'll get crisps often with HP Sauce and malt vinegar.

Mike, I hope you enjoy Maine. I would like to make that trip someday too. I was in Vermont for business about a month or so ago. I am thinking of taking my wife up there. I have frequent flyer miles and hotel points to use up. If you go to Maine, let us know how it went.
