Third revision of Come & Go.
This is the third, and hopefully the final revision of this song. Thanks to all the great advice and patience of the people here..... maybe we got it this time..... I'd appreciate your comments before we wrap it up and send it off. Come & Go >>> http://www.soundclick.com...34&songID=11414196 updated version In this version, the instrumentation was changed a bit. Drums and bass were changed out for a more rocking feel. Steel and fiddle as well as other things were removed or at least enveloped to certain limited parts. Piano was also tightly controlled. We decided to record the vocal tracks again. So on Monday evening, Cassie came in and we recorded a number of tracks. 3 keepers on the Rode and 2 keepers on the SM-58. One of the Rode tracks was used as the main vox. The other 2 Rode tracks and the 58 tracks were mixed wide and low for some layering. Main vox has: Cakewalk's Studioverb2 reverb, FX2 tape sim, POD farm delay, in the track..... Slight compression and EQ and very low SV2 in the vocal buss where the other dry vocal tracks come together too. The layering is very subtle....and easier to hear with the vox buss soloed. Singing without a pop filter didn't work well. But it was fun. As always, feel free to comment on anything about this song. The original version was very country and dated sounding. It did however, win #1 in the January 2012 Houston Songwriter's Association song contest. The original is here>>> http://www.soundclick.com...34&songID=11124487 Thank you.

Nice HOOK! Now, I'm now familiar with where this song started, but I would like to hear a tempo feel like Lady Antebellum's "I Need You Now" because it's the same kind of feel lyrically and range wise. GH man, this is great work. Tell Cassie to push that diaphragm on her low notes and to not give up just because they are low. Push hard! Great work. So much I could say. I'm going to listen a few times and make some more comments. I'm pretty thankful to have heard this!

OK - Cassie either needs more energy/feeling/passion or to be backed down in the mix. I don't believe her...sounds like she's just singing during the verses. Ask her, I bet she likes singing the chorus better than the versus. She needs to make the those words drip... "the world came between us" make me believe that! But seriously dude, this is a great track, I hope to hear it on the radio or tv.

Great advice Josh.... she'll be reading this thread I'm sure. I keep telling her that... about the passion and feeling it. She will grow, as a singer, into that. I did not allow her to read the lyrics, they were on a stand for reference by at a 90 degree angle so she couldn't stand there and read them. I told her to learn them and she did a good job with that. I can tell a big difference between this performance and her first version.

This sounds pretty polished to me. The mix is full and balanced, although I would have liked to heard the bass guitar at least as loud as the drums. I liked her vocal performance personally, but it's like icing on the cake. It's always a good idea to memorize the lyrics. Very well done.

Love that rocking guitar...just gritty perfection. Not my kind of mix, kinda cold, could use some mid boost.

Hey Herb GREAT job! IMO the change of the arrangement really simplified a once busy mix and gave it that Contemporary Country vibe that you hear more on today's radio. Cassie's vocal delivery much stronger and sung with cofidence. KUDOS! I really like the song but I'm not crazy about the mix. One my end the vocals had depth but the rest was flat in compare. GREAT JOB! Ohhhh, was that you on the lead guitar or Band In A Box. If you, what guitar did you use and did you mic the amp or DI it. Kev

I liked the other mix/performance better. This one is too clinical and perfected or something. In other words, it was done and now it's overworked. JMO

Tim... isn't that the formula in Nashville now though? Truth be told, I do like the original as well. The person who reviewed this in Nashville made the same comment about the original. he said he really liked this song, it had melody and a feel that isn't evident in much of the music on the radio..... BUT..... if my goal was to try to get a cut with the song, the production was dated and needed to be made more contemporary, with crunchy, screaming, distorted guitars, and I needed to lose the traditional instrumentation...fiddles and steel and dobro.

Wow, she's hot... And this performance/arrangement/mix is so much better Herb! Her performance is the way she should do it. I knew she was a singer, I never doubted that. "Everytime we come and go baby." I would bring you up a bit, and maybe "tune you a little." :-) On some of the fill parts (lead guit) It's good? But I would go more for feel, and melody, and a little less of the mechanics and motion. Maybe in spots? But hey, EVERYONE is a producer? And this is much better. Most notably, her performance really improved and is noticablly better. I would love to have access to a vocalist like this, bravo and good job.

I know Herb. I remember your first stab at the more new/now distorted mix. That's what i was referring to. If you remember, I liked it then except for some of the fills. And, I understand what you are going for. Country ain't country no more.

Ok. fresh ears. Herb, I think what I'm missing in this mix is the wall of distorted guitars that was there in the first rough. (if I remember correctly). Now, it seems to me that it is a wall of bright acoustic guits. It could be what yoyo is referring to in the lack of mids. (I agree with him on that) Don't get me wrong though as there is nothing "wrong" with this mix cause anyone with 2 ears can hear it's a good song. And, It also could be, I just like to hear myself talk. Good luck with it.

OK... good point. I did pull the electric down a bit especially in the verses to get that country acoustic dynamic happening. I plan to revisit it today to work on the "mids" issue and that may be the problem. Since I have the guitars bussed into electric and acoustic, it's an easy thing to tweeze the envelopes in the busses to see what happens.

So I edited it and reposted a new version taking into account the 3 suggestions I got.... Bass> add compressor on track to bump it up a db or two in fatness. EQ> in the master buss eq there was a slight dip in the 300hz range.... by a few db... that is now closer to flat. Electric crunch guitars> bumped the envelopes a bit to add a db or so to the levels. Nothing major at all..... a few db here and there in those 3 areas.

Like the guitar work in a big way, very Eagles. the chorus had a bit of a Eagles thing going as well, cool thing!!! The opening vocal line is so very sweet. Her emotion in the line "Is this how the story has to end" faded a bit. I love the sound of voice, I could picture her singing any Eagles song very well. The production and mix is well done. Sounds like you have a keeper. Cheers, Terry
