Thirteen - new orchestral music in honor of the year
Hello again, I'm continuing to expand my palate, both compositionally and sonically. "Thirteen" is a short orchestral piece in honor of the year. If reflects my obsessiveness about numbers, rhythm, melody and structure. I've upgraded my woodwind sounds to Berlin Woodwinds and my brass to Cinebrass. I continue to use LASS for the strings. I created the whole thing in Sonar X2. I'd love to hear your response to it! https://soundcloud.com/ascent-music/thirteen13

Quite an enjoyable piece nice contrasts and movement my ears enjoyed it. But as a know nothing I tend to say nothing other than I like. Thanks for sharing

Okay, I gotta say, very impressive. Here's what Bruce is doing: His opening theme is in 13/8. 13 is a prime number with no natural subdivisions, yet he makes the rhythmic and pitch structure of the phrase sound natural and complete. AND, the theme opens with three units of three (short-long = 1 + 2 = 3 eighth notes-duration (two actual notes)). Normally that would give it a triplet feel, but these don't feel like triplets--instead, the theme has its own unique character that can only captured as...13. Well done...

Hey, thanks for the detailed analysis of the first section, Jerald! You're correct, that is exactly what I was going for. I subdivide the rhythm in a few different ways during the piece, but I wanted to fool the listener into feeling the rhythm more naturally by hearing a triplet or shuffle feel at the start. There are many other ideas based around prime numbers in the piece, all subtly hidden in melody. Thanks to all for the listens and the kind comments.

Very imaginative piece. I can tell you put a lot of effort into this and I hope it receives the kind of attention it deserves. I guess if numerically we went to 26 or other multiples of 13 , then it can be evened out and not sound odd. Not sure exactly what you did with everything at that level but the music flows very well here. Enjoyed the listen and thanks for sharing!

@Bruce, I love the numbers games too. You probably know this one already but check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0mtZapDH_Y Daft Punk, opening of Homework album. At exactly 35 seconds, they blow your mind. I actually had to notate this out in both meters in order to stop obsessing over it.

Hi Bruce, This was a very enjoyable piece of music you have produced here which I enjoyed a lot. You have a very good way of making the instruments sound authentic. Kept my interest throughout. Loved the change at 2:40. Mark.

Thanks, everyone. It was indeed a lot of effort! I'm going to try to add EWQL choirs to my next piece. Why keep it simple? ; ) Jerald, the Daft Punk piece frightened me. Thanks for sharing.
