This Melodyne ARA looks really interesting. Do you know if there is a vid on it?
http://blog.cakewalk.com/easy-audio-to-midi/ I suppose you could record voice and convert it to any midi instrument... or what ever instrument you play the convert it to midi and to any other instrument. Very cool... I want a vid. J

This might not be what you are asking or looking for but have you been to the Celemony site and looked at their videos? There are plenty of tutorials.

I just recorded live drums on a jazz tune. I needed a better kick so I gated the kick (which was recorded on its own track) and bounced to a new track. I then applied Melodyne to it using the Percussive analytic. Then, I created a new instrument track for Addictive Drums and then dragged the Melodyne track right onto it. Voila! I now had a midi kick drum parft. I then transposed the kick notes to the C1 kick and seasoned to taste. The original kick is now replaced by a Sonar bass drum and I can edit at will. This whole process took 3 minutes at best. How cool is that? Rimshot

I have found that the audio to MIDI functionality is a little hit and miss, even on monophonic lines. A few days ago I recorded a series of very clean 16th notes on guitar (using a pick) and ran it through Melodyne and onto a MIDI track. It made a real pig's ear of the timing....some of the notes were tied.

How is that different from the way people have been using Melodyne pre-ARA? I'm sure there is some difference and so I'd be curious to know what it is. Pre ARA you would convert the kick drum audio to MIDI using Melodyne and then use the MIDI to trigger the drum sampler. Has integrating ARA made this process more streamlined? The first benefit I can think of is the Random Access that gets Melodyne loaded with the audio faster than ever. Does it also streamline the MIDI export somehow? Thanks. best regards, mike

Mike I had and used Melodyne Editor prior to ARA and tried to use it a few times but since the X series was giving me so much trouble -that combined with having to export and import parts to use it I was spinning my wheels. There's more benefit to ARA than just the use of Melodyne but it is very nice to use with X3.

I recently recorded the "Head" of a jazz piece on electric guitar. With the ARA integration I simply dragged the clip onto a Lounge Lizard track and voila, Fender Rhodes doubling the part. It was almost instantaneous. I had to correct one note, caused by a string bend, I think. That's different from the way people have been using Melodyne pre-ARA, isn't it?

Does that mean that there is no export and subsequent import process? Do you just drag your melodyne accessed audio clip onto a midi track and it turns in to MIDI automatically? Does it actually turn in to MIDI so that you may edit it with MIDI tools after the drag and drop? best regards, mike

There is no import/export. If you want to use Melodyne, you select an area and choose Melodyne from the menu. It then opens in Melodyne in the Multidock. With the audio to MIDI thing, there is no need to even access Melodyne yourself. Drag a perfectly normal Audio clip to a MIDI track and it converts it to a normal MIDI clip. Simples.

It's not that simples, especially if you're using the polyphonic algorithm in Editor. In most cases you have to do some work in Melodyne first before dragging the clip. It gets confused very easily by two notes an octave apart and it sometimes mistakes overtones for notes. So you may find yourself having to go through the audio note by note and fixing what it's gotten wrong.

This thread was about the Melodyne ARA integration, I thought, not Melodyne. The above example that I gave was mostly monophonic, although there were some double stops at the end. It was a clean electric guitar track. Only one note (a string bend) needed correcting. Hence, simples.. I assumed Mike was familiar with Melodyne and it's capabilities, but was enquiring about it's ARA integration into Sonar. The first time I used Melodyne Editor on polyphonic material I was initially disappointed in it's detection, and at the amount of "cleaning up" needed. It quickly dawned on me that it was very little when one considered what Melodyne was doing. As I practiced (and read the manual), I became very swift at "cleaning up" the note detection, and am still amazed at what it can do. My first attempt corrected a single wrong note in a busy classical guitar piece that is un-noticeable. It took a little work, but probably less than re-recording it. It can take a little work, but just think what it is doing. Back to the OP. Regardless of one's thoughts on Melodyne's capabilities (and most think it is pretty amazing), it's ARA integration in Sonar is fantastic. edited for typo
