This Week's Thumbs Up...
As much as I'm inclined to sarcasm, I always love when a company proves that my apprehensions were not justified and I love to give them credit for it. So, kudos to Camel Audio. I had an issue trying to install 2 new sound banks I bought last night, so I wrote to them. Since it was past 1 am my time, on a Sunday, I wasn't expecting any reply before at least Monday, probably later. But when I logged in this morning I found that they had already sent an e-mail with a fix. Looks like Alchemy will be a more than fitting successor to the derelict Rapture and Dimension Pro as my go to 3rd party synth for odd soundscapes and textures. (I know it's got much more potential than just that, but Rapture and Dim Pro were an integral part of my workflow for so long, so I'm glad to see that covered).

Alchemy is wonderful and my go to synth above all others. Great company. Part of their profits go to environmental charities. I don't use Rapture or Dim Pro any more.

I didn't know that. Alway nice to hear of a company that gives back (Valhalla DSP is another one which comes to mind). Isn't Alchemy based on .SFZ, like Rapture and Dim Pro? A shame that Cakewalk who had a very strong set of instruments w/ tons of potential just sort of gave up on them...

+1 Camel - some of the first plug ins I ever purchased and still using them today - and can only confirm they are a great company to deal with Nigel

You can pm them on KVR too. The only wait is usually the time difference. Sharp as tacks.

Dynamite synths, Reflecting also on why haven't opened up Rapture of Dim Pro for awhile. Dim Pro probably still a keeper. John

I'll take every opportunity I can to commend CA for the superb documentation. Alchemy is one of the deepest, most flexible synths out there. IMO, it has the best documentation by a mile. I seldom have use for Alchemy because it's forte seems to be sound-track/scape sounds. But it's an engineering marvel - and like I said, the documentation is the gold standard.

I've gathered a lot of material for the project with my wife, so until she catches up and learn all those lyrics, I'm working on, uh, my portfolio so to speak, which features a lot of soundtrack sort of music. Alchemy sure seems to complement my sampler nicely. Incidentally, one thing I've noticed browsing those modern libraries is that a lot of what I've heard in Hollywood thrillers and horror movies throughout the last 10 years or so seems to be a matter of layering two or three patches from such libraries. Don't get me wrong I like the results, but I'm used to building things from scratch, not having the whole thing, beat and weird eerie sounds all, already drenched in reverb and sounding like a finished product at the push of a key.

I do find it somewhat disappointing that Cakewalk is an also-ran in the sfz based synth department when they started with the clear advantage of having had Renee in-house. That said, Dim Pro is still a nice synth and Rapture somewhat underrated (despite being ignored by Cakewalk).

They're still great indeed, and still perfectly adequate. But they're on their last leg here unless Cakewalk surprises us with an update, which would be a first in 4 years IIRC. The only reason I can still run them is that they were already installed when I updated my OS AND I'm still running Logic 9 in 32 Bit. The minute I upgrade my Mac and/or Logic, they'll be a thing of the past, so I felt like maybe it was time to move on, find alternatives and avoid creating any new project using Dim Pro or Rapture. But the fact that they're still that adequate and usable so long after the last update tells a lot about just how much potential there is (or was) in those synths. A shame that they've abandoned them, really...
