Anything can happen, but I'd guess this is good news overall for Cakewalk users. Their decision to emphasize the Cakewalk brand, the tone and language of the announcement ("The news you've all been hoping for...") looks like a deliberate attempt to engage with the user base and throw a lifeline to those who are sticking with Cakewalk's products. Sometimes, companies buy other companys' intellectual assets and quietly merge them into existing products or tech, and the purchased assets vanish and no longer have an independent identity. That doesn't seem to be happening here. It looks like they avoided buying the Cakewalk company because they didn't want to take on the debt and obligations (and why would they even want to, frankly?), but bought the valuable parts, and are now making an effort to emphasize that the brand and product are still alive and have a future. Nothing is guaranteed, but I think there is reason to feel optimistic about Sonar's future.
That's how it looks to me, anyway.
