This documentary blew my mind
It's called "Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory". Look it up on Netflix or YouTube.
We already know music is powerful. That's why we make it. But I had no idea how deep it goes.

Alive Inside ( 2014) The documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken health-care system to demonstrate music's ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain) and musician Bobby McFerrin ("Don't Worry, Be Happy"). 8-Stars rating on IMDB. Have to check it out.

Yup, that's the one.
I'm hoping there's some truth to the idea that music forestalls Alzheimer's. My father, his mother and my mother's mother all died from it. Doesn't bode well for me.
Both Mom and Grandma played the piano. Not encouraging.
But my maternal grandfather didn't have it, and he was a musician (not a piano player). Of course, he dropped dead from a heart attack at 74. But at least he still had his wits about him at the time and could still play the guitar and mandolin. I need to spend more time on the guitar.

I haven't seen it but the description rings a bell and I suspect I might have seen a clip. Is there a scene with an old black guy in a home who remembers nothing and recognizes nobody, but when they hook him up to an iPod with all the old jazz tunes on, he comes alive and starts talking about his youth? Or something. I have a vague recollection. Might have to watch this.

I haven't seen this yet, but just reading about the effects of music on people is very noteworthy. I believe music is embedded in all of us from birth itself and has some definite qualities in it that simply impacts us.
I've noticed that my little girl (who just turned 1 a few weeks ago) truly loves music.
Ever since her birth up to now, whenever she cries, I've put on Mozart or Bach (on my phone), and she immediately stops the crying.......while paying complete attention to the music.......everytime!! Even if she's playing in another room and hears me playing the acoustic, she walks/crawls as quick as she can to sit down (clapping her hands) and listens to the music.
I've done this same thing to my other 3 children as well, but it wasn't as effective on them as it's been on my little one. However, they all have a very good "musical ear" and can sing in key with a good range of pitch.

Watched it last night. It can be hard to watch at times because it does deal with an illness associated (generally) with aged people. Somewhat puts the question/fear in you that if you make it that long, will I be affected by Alzheimer or Dementia. Dr. Oz feels there will be cures in the next decade. Hope he is right. It was enlightening to see how well the patients came to life listening to their music.
The documentary though doesn't show patients that did not respond. That is my biggest question from the movie. Do some patient not like music? Perhaps they need some other stimulus? The current simple to control methods of medication may keep the patients alive and under control, but at what cost to quality of life. Alternative treatments such a musical therapy should be welcomed. I hope this music remedy can be further promoted, and have many more successes.
