This is a new musical chapter in my life...

"Shopping" for Gibson SG's on Sweetwater's site last night, I fell in love with the Derek Truck's signature SG. Isn't she stunning?

Not that expensive either - in view of the price of regular SGs I mean.

At any rate, by association, it reminded me of the Allman Brothers Band, which I've heard about for decades but really know next to nothing about - I mean, I'm familiar with the biggest hits I imagine, though I couldn't tell if it's one of their songs or what.

As unimaginable as it seems, I'm actually glad that I've kept so much stuff for later - this means I have a steady supply of awesome classic rock to discover and get all excited about, no matter how uninteresting the contemporary music may turn. A few months ago, it was Rush... Now it's time for the Allman Brothers.

Next - who knows, Lynyrd Skynyrd? :P

You should be in for a pleasant surprise, ol pal. TAB were a very good band for their time and Duane was an influence for so many slide players. Try Idelwild South...then their Fillmore concerts. Southern rock at its finest...at it's inception. Lynnerd Skynnerd...pah!

So sad that Duane was on that motorcycle right at their beginning in '72.  Then they lose their bass player.  It's amazing they stuck together and prospered!

Re: This is a new musical chapter in my life... 2014/06/08 09:58:24 (permalink)
Absolutely!!!!

Very similar to my 69 SG.  Go to my web site, select Music & Recording , scroll down to bottom.

It used to be cherry red before it was stolen (2 times) and dinged real bad. It was recovered both times. (I've posted those stories here in the past) I painted it white.... it looked good but, that was a disaster,  White shows the dirt too easily. I eventually  sanded it and went natural with just several coats of poly.

Until Gibson reissued this guitar as the "Angus Young" reissue for $3000, I had seen very few that had the tremolo tail piece on it like my SG has.  I think George Harrison also has one of the original SG's of this style.  Gibson's AY reissue wasn't a particularly popular reissue because prices dropped to the $2200 range rather quickly.

I know you will enjoy the SG.... to me, it's one of the finest guitars ever made. It has a slim, thin neck, it's weight is perfect, and such a sexy shape, throw in the dual humbuckers covered in chrome........ nothing even comes close IMHO.....

One band I was in, the other guitarist had a Gold Top LP. It was so heavy he was trying to rig up a double padded strap support. We swapped guitars for a set one night and he exclaimed that the SG was so light he could have used a piece of rope as a strap and played that way all night.  Yup... throw a wide strap on the SG and it will seem like you have nothing hanging from your shoulder ....... pull that trigger....!

Talk about 'in the eye of the beholder'..love the sound of an SG (especially Angus' clean/dirty tone), but really don't like it's looks at all.

I'm with you James. Hard to enjoy playing a guitar that is just butt ugly. Maybe if I could tell the difference of what type of solid body guitar the HB sounds made things may look different to me.

I played with two guitarists in one band that both had SG's. Later I had an Eb0 and then even later an Eb3. Not saying the are beautiful but they are a staple in my mind.

When I started playing in '63, the SG was too funky (is that ugly?) looking for me. Now I like the Historic '61 with the Maestro (though I tend to think of John Cippolina! vs other SG players). However, every time I play one, I seem "way off/lost" as I move up the neck. I suppose I'd get used to it, but after these 5 decades of mostly Strats, (several Guilds, Gretsches, a '68 Riviera and '68 LP Custom), the neck/body relationship throws me! LOL
I suppose for "humbucker Gibson", I prefer a Les Paul.

I love my SG. It may not be the prettiest guitar in the world. It's got 36 years of dings, scratches and fade. But when I hold it, it feels like a part of me. I wouldn't trade it for the nicest guitar in the world.

Many guitar purists insist that SG necks are unstable and prone to damage. I wouldn't have a clue. I only know my best pals 69 SG had the skinniest dern neck I've ever played. And...natch...he traded it away back when everything cost next to nothing. Sigh.

PS: oh yea, I almost forgot...my other best pal recently got the first SG he's ever owned in over thirty years of pro playing (the Standard, I believe...in white) and just loves the heck out of it.

I guess I kinda feel the same way about the "plain Jane" look of some of the other guitars that people seem to go bonkers over. To each his own, and yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  Some things are so ugly, they are cute? At least that's what I've heard. I had a SG 5 string bass guitar at one time. I would not buy it again as mentioned above because of the neck. Too much tension in the strings for it.
And unfortunately I would think that way about the guitar also. (for the price I think there are better guitars out there perhaps, maybe it is just something with the thinner neck -hard to say but not a bass guitar in that design. Sorry but I know for sure but that was some years ago now).

As to Allman Brothers some I think became Sea Level after the demise:
Never really caught on though:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIXuCGLfcFU

(a favorite song).

Album the song is on:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5zWvZWgrs0
A few songs of that will warm you up to the Allman Brothers although different.
Actually an ugly time in the history of music since Disco was big at the time for some reason no one like me knows.
Like Trance music nowadays for some other reason no one like me understands.
This concludes your music history lesson for today. Music to shake your finger at, and perhaps not your index finger.

My last student (I've stopped teaching after 50 years of it) just got a '61 Historic SG for his high school graduation/ 18th birthday present. Nice gift, eh?!   ....I will have to check that out.

RE the Allman Brothers Band. I remember waking up to Dreams one morning in Chicago (early '70?). It was the first I'd heard of them and it blew me away. I saw them in DC with the Band and the Dead, back then. Eat A Peach and the first LP still stick out the most for me, though Live At The Fillmore was killer, too.

The first band I jammed with in high school the bass player had the Gibson SG bass... EB0 I believe.   We had a matched looking pair...   Same color scheme.

I would have to say to Rain, I always trust  whatever "calls" me about a guitar (or mic or any instrument, VST etc) is going to continue to inspire me for a long time. I don't have any experience (none in my almost 51 years of "playing") to the contrary.

So, go for it! There are some items that I have never owned that it is now time for, and a few that have been long absent in my daily life, that are going to get "put back in place". I love being inspired!

I like that a LOT. Going to SW to take a look. Next thing on my "to buy" list is a KitchenAid stand mixer so I can grind my own heirloom wheat and make my own sausage. There is this vertical wood smoker too...
Than again, I've wanted a red SG for a LONG time! This one looks like it will fill the bill. I would hope the Derek wouldn't lend his name to a crappy guitar.

Thanks for the head's up!

Wow... that's nice. I think I'll probably jump on an Epi G-400 Pro or maybe a Gibson SG Special. Then if I really fall in love with it I'll get a better one. I should sell my LP to get an SG. I try to like the LP and I do like the tone but it is the most uncomfortable guitar I have ever played.

Re: This is a new musical chapter in my life... 2014/06/08 15:51:15 (permalink)
Just to clear it up, unfortunately, I'm not buying that one, not yet - that's why I used quotation marks ("shopping") but that wasn't clear either - correct word would have been browsing I guess. Darn frenchie!

FWIW, I never liked SGs until recently - it was all strats and LPs for me. The way they looked and felt totally put me off. And then after getting back to LPs for a while, I started wishing for something that'd have elements of both the strat and the LP.  I knew I wanted:

Tune-o-matic type of bridge
Knobs and switch out of the way
A pair of humbuckers
Better higher frets access than the LP
Set neck

And I'm a man of pretty traditional tastes, so I tend to want to stick to classic models, like Gibson's and Fender's. At that point, I was more likely to go with Gibson than anything else, anyway.

I tried to find one SG I'd feel comfortable playing, but it wasn't until I tried a Epiphone SG with a fatter neck that it somehow clicked. That neck somehow made up for the overall thinness of the guitar. And then I saw that the 2013 SGJ had pretty much everything I wanted - including a fatter neck - and allowed me to finally put my hands on an actual Gibson, not an Epiphone. Ok, it's an entry level Gibson, but it's mine

When I ordered it, my wife asked me if I really thought I could be happy with it, being that she knew how I dug LPs. I still didn't like SGs all that much but I was warming up.

It wasn't long until I found myself wishing that I'd switched to SGs decades ago. And the guitar started to look better and better as that happened.

I still think the LPs are the best looking solid body ever, but I've developed a strong taste for the SGs.

I agree at the LP, especially (for me) a '58 plain top... those just knock me OUT. I like a stop tailpiece so I was a little put off by that big piece of metal tailpiece on the DT model, don't know what you call it, just know I don't like the way it looks. I always lock down a tremolo and take the arm off.
SGs really look good to me, they look RocknRoll. I like the red ones.

Set neck/bolt neck... I don't care. I don't think it makes much, if any, difference. Strats and Teles both sound great with bolt necks, LPs and SGs sound good with set necks but I'm not convinced that it matters... except that people are prejudiced about on certain guitars. I need another real Tele too... I need to win the lottery.

Strats and Iced Tea Std Les Pauls were always the two best looking over my last 51 "guitar" years, but I have gotten very interested in the SG, Firebird, ES-355, Guild Aristocrat and Tele's as I've gotten older.
...The Guild Duane Eddy, Artist Award  and D'Angelico New Yorker have really gotten gorgeous, like old Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Porches and Jaguars! Well, perhaps I should include the Jaguar AND the Jazzmaster. Maybe this is some kind of nostalgic phase for all the guitars I haven't bought yet! (I have owned a Tele)

The lightness and look have certainly grown on me, regarding the SG Standard, but I still want the Les Paul.

Some would prefer a Firebird or a Flying V if one can be found (depends on when Gibson ever makes the guitar perhaps again or still or whatever they do there).

Regarding the set neck - my preference for those is totally subjective. It's a bit like the icing on the cake.

Incidentally, while looking for a tele for my brother-in-law, I stumbled upon very inexpensive set-neck ones, loaded w/ DiMarzio Super Distortion and/or EMG's. Which only goes to show that set neck doesn't mean better or high end.

I'd be curious to try a thicker SG-type of guitar. The ESP Viper models seem a bit thicker than the traditional SG. And the twist on the shape makes them quite interesting to look at as well. Originally, I thought they actually redeemed the whole SG design.

The Viper 1000 Deluxe is quite a deal, at $799. A shame they messed with the knobs and switch placement.

Re The Allman Brothers Band - Man!!! That's that song from The Exorcist (bar scene). Rambling Man. Meaning I've heard that one hundreds of times.

I am more familiar with their music than I would have thought, though I didn't know it was them. What a nice thing it is to finally discover such an amazing band!

Enjoy the journey, Rain.
I've been a a fan of theirs forever. I missed out on seeing Duane, but Dickey did a fine job of carrying the torch.
The Allman Bro's and the Grateful Dead were masters of the long jam. The modern world seems too impatient for such things, but I'm glad I was around at that time. There was a unique flavor and artistry to what they did.
I like Skynyrd as well, but they were not at the same place.
Skynyrd was whiskey and cigarettes. The Allman Bro's were brandy and cigars.
Depending on my mood, I'll take 'em both.

Then it should be a better deal @ $499 http://www.jrrshop.com/gu...u-black-cherry-b-stock
granted it is B stock but every instrument I have ever owned rapidly becomes B stock in my hands.
