This is how to start the new year!

I got an email from my cowriter Pat today.  Seems she entered our song ...Come & Go, into the Houston Texas Songwriters Association monthly song contest. I didn't know about this.... (I'm OK with it though)

Seems we are the winners for January 2012!  Link to the news>>>   http://www.houstonsongwriters.com/

They must have a pretty active  and large bunch of writers because they choose 2 winning songs every month from their contest (open to members)  and they end up on a compilation CD at some point.

On my soundclick site, you can find the original, which was the winner in Houston as well as an updated version.  An individual in Nashville has heard this and made the suggestion that we make the production more modern sounding. Seems steel guitars and fiddles have been run out of country music and distorted, screaming guitar are now the "in Vogue" thing to have in the production. We are planning to have Cassie record her vocal parts again with more edge and energy, then it's back to Nashville to see what happens with this tune.

original & winner in Houston>>  http://www.soundclick.com...34&songID=11124487

updated WIP >>> http://www.soundclick.com...34&songID=11414196

comments on the updated mix are appreciated.... I was gonna wait until after I recorded the new vox...... but.... oh well.... have a listen.

This is a fantastic recording.  Your singer has a great voice, and the hooks are very catchy.  I wish you well with this song; it deserves a wide audience.  You always put out some of the best music on this forum.

Well, I think the cymbals of the drums are way over the top on the new mix, and all people must smile when recording the song. Not sure if it is leaning more towards hard rock with all the guitars, because I guess I miss the piano from the original mix. Good luck with the song though but for one thing I would definitly down the cymbals of the drums in it.

That's a good deal, buddy!  Congrats.  It is a very nice song.  It should be illegal to remove steel guitars and fiddles!  I'm glad you didn't.

Awesome Herb congradulations!  The song is catchy and well written, your partner if very good also.  As far as the mix, I agree with Spacealf that the cymbals might be a little harsh.  The snare could use a little beef to it as well.  Minor things which you will probably fix when she re-records the vox as you said.

congratz to both of you again

Mike.... probably so.... I had just thrown a bit of EQ/comp on the kick/bass buss before I exported this mix.

I will likely go back in and remove it and put the sweets on the tracks so I can make individual tweeks.

Its still a work in progress so nothing yet is carved in stone.  Thanks for the input on the new mix.

Lots of good ears here for sure.

Hi Herb - Sincere congratulations. So very pleased for you and Pat - about time your music received the plaudits it so richly deserves. As for screaming distorted guitars, I am sure this is just a fad - you can't beat the old sound!

Hey Herb – congrats! I remember this tune (solid country to my ears)  – nice to see it’s getting some recognition. Good for you two. As far as “updating” it, well, that’s show biz, but I like it fine just the way it is.

    guitarhacker,

I've listened to both versions a number of times.   My thought is that I like where you're going with the new version but would trim some of the guitar licks down a bit and figure out how to work the steel back in in places.  My dos centavos.

Malcolmb... I hope it's a fad but so far in country.... nothing seems to have come back around yet.  Gotta keep up with the times or do an oldies show.

BiabDude..... sounds like a Gibson ..... doesn't it? Cranked up of course. Sweet. It's still not final.

Manny: yeah... we're actually working on rewrites  and updates on two of them... this is one.... two of the songs got really nice crits from some top Nashville writers with a few suggestions for some minor improvements/changes that will hopefully put them both over the bar......and we're working on those now.

dkbender.... I really like the steel and fiddle as well.... but that's not currently the hot thing in Nashville at the moment..... and yeah I might look at how I could blend it back in.... on this WIP.

Guitarpima..... than you....   but a Nashville artist cut and a top 10 hit would be so much nicer.... the frosting on the cake so to speak.   We're still working on that part of the deal.

You guys will be among the first to know.

But really..... it's all about the creative process of writing..... whether I ever get a big hit cut or not..... I'll be writing songs as long as I have the inspiration to do so.  I love the process and the results.

Real nice tune, Herb, and I like that gal's voice.  Good arrangement too.  The mix sounded good and the organ coming in was a nice touch.  My only nit was that the cymbals sounded a bit splashy to me at points, but that could be a taste thing.

Nice job, congratz on the win and my best wishes for good luck in Nashville.

    Hi Herb,
I just listened to your new mix ,
    Wow ,
it sure sounds just like the type of Modern Country Music  that gets played on the Radio
and makes lots money  good luck with your opportunity

I like the tune, it is well written ,
i dig the voice and her vocal delivery, the guitar tone sounded nice and meaty ...
    sounds totally within  the genre

with a few suggesting that I add steel guitar back into the new mix...... I took some time and played around with this mix this afternoon.

    http://www.soundclick.com...34&songID=11414196

I added steel in a few places and backed it down in level..... more like s p i c e......nothing says country like a steel.......and backed off the drums/cymbals a bit. I added some verb to the guitars to smooth them out as I felt they were a bit rough and in your face.

This mix was done with headphones.  So... I doubt it's perfect, and it will be the last one I post up until I get the new vocal tracks recorded..... it'll probably be several weeks at the earliest.
