This is why we can't have nice things...

I've reached that point where, after stumbling on what was called Bohemian Rhapsody Star Wars edition, I officially can no longer bear to hear Bohemian Rhapsody.

That's it.

People completely ruined it for me.

It's been over 20 years since Wayne's World brought the song back into the spotlight, and ever since, it's only been getting worst - even more in the last few years with the advent of online media sharing. I so wish they could have left it alone... Why did they have to go on, cover version after cover version after cover version? And karaoke versions. Or simply using the original version again and again and again...

It saddens me, really. It's an amazing piece of work, and I will forever recognize that and appreciate it - but people spoiled it, to a point where I feel like I'm about to puke out my intestines whenever I hear it.

This seems to be the way with very popular music...

The radio will play it till you can't stand it anymore...
Then other artists will cover it to make it even more unbearable...
Then AI, X Factor, and the Voice will add insult to injury...

And finally...you've reached the point that you've just had enough...

I can sympathize Rain...

Exactly.

And the worst part is that I avoid mass media as much as I possibly can. I'm actually under-exposed to them compared to the average normal carbon unit. I'm only catching hints, here and there. I can't imagine how I'd survive a full blast.

But even at that rate, I still feel like I must have heard 20 000 too many versions of "Somebody that I used to Know" and from what I understand, trying to sing "Someone Like You" is a mandatory rite of passage for anyone with vocal cords.

The problem is all in your head Rain LOL! I still love hearing 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Someone I used to know'. Just listen to the original artists doing them. They really do it the best. I still get that feeling of joy and excitment and hearing then for the first time even now.

Stairway still works for me - I don't know how that happened, I managed to not be over-exposed to it. But Bohemian, I'm afraid there's nothing I can do. Even the original is burned out for me. But as I said, it doesn't take anyway from the merits of the song. So, yes, it's in my head. :P

I agree wholeheartedly with the statement that the original artists do it the best - which I guess makes it even worst, and only fuels my exasperation, because I wish people would take a hint and leave those darn songs along. But monkey see, monkey do. And in this day and age, every monkey has an internet connexion to see and do what every other monkey does.

Run the World didn't even last 20 seconds before I had reached the point of no return. I still remember vividly when first heard it in a clothing store in Moscow. I walked right out because it was absolutely unbearable. I am not kidding.

Took over 20 years and a gazillion versions to get me sick and tired of Bohemian...

To me "Nantucket Sleighride" by Mountain is the perfect substitute for "Stairway to heaven" when I'm in need of epic nostalgia. "Bohemian rhapsody" is substituted by "Carry on, wayward son" by Kansas. That way the "originals" don't get so worn out.

Just curious, what is this someone I used to know song, I did a search but all the responses led to some song by Gotye which I've never heard. Is this a European thing? Also someone like you is the Rod Stewart song? Sorry to be dense.

I think they're talking about the Gotye song.  It had its fifteen minutes of fame.  It got some airplay on radio and TV, but mostly you had to go to You Tube to view/hear it.  I got a little tired of hearing it--but not on the scale of Rhapsody, Stairway or Freebird.  A bunch of Fleetwood Mac falls into that category, too.  Over play--not video--killed the radio star.

The thing that killed Stairway To Heaven for me was when I heard the Muzak version in an elevator.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

Its was all over the radio in the UK and UAE, still is in the UAE and its become a staple of many cover bands playing in Dubai.

Unless you count the 6.8 million US sales making it the highest selling US single in it's year of release and the 13 million worldwide. Other than that, no-one ever heard of it ;)

Oh well I'd never heard of it nor did the video impress me very much. Usually songs that are terribly overplayed are usually off the scale on one and or the other.
But to be honest I've lost touch with a great deal of what is pop music's cutting edge.
Who knows; in 40 years this tune might be another Brown Eyed Girl...
Speaking of which is that the most over requested song in history for you European guys? Or anyone not here in the US?

They're all nice--the first couple hundred times you hear them.    I'm not nearly as tired of it as others here are.  It hasn't reached that level for me, but I can see how it might.  The girl is cute and the video was interesting.

I just listened to your favorite version of Bohemian Rhapsody, it was fun.  He didn't have quite the same range as the guitar solo.  He had to stay at least an octave lower when Brain went for the higher notes.  I couldn't do any better, though.

It's not flat yet?  I still remember when I was a DJ (from '80 thru '83) holding records flat so I could look across the grooves.  If they were light grey, the record was dead but, if they were a sparkly black, then the record still had decent grooves and was ready to be used.

I also remember spinning them endlessly on the tips of my index finger while another one plays, but that's a different story.

That Gotye song has had years of fame, sold billions, he has toured the world with it and it literally has made him. And he is Australian as well thanks very much. He has taken out major awards too with this and on several ocassions. When you can write a song that is even slightly in that league I will be interested to hear what you and others have to say.

It is pretty cool actually. Check out the original carefully and listen to the mix too on a fine setup. You will be amazed. There is so much going on in that it is quite incredible, yet it does not sound like it. Also how many people have written songs that almost thousands in the world on YouTube has attempted a version of it. I realise that many songs have been covered of course by many people but this seems to have struck a chord emotionally with many people from the four corners of the globe. That does not happen that often. Gotye himself compiled this I believe.

This is pretty cool:

Here's the waveform of Bohemian Rhapsody bounced to mono in SONAR (I pinched the idea from Wikipedia):

To me, it just 'looks' sort of interesting, and makes you want to listen to a song that develops like that.

Even the quieter parts haven't been brought up to level it all out. You certainly wouldn't see such a vast dynamic range in most modern productions.
