This sound

I'm going out on a limb here by revealing my preferences, but I've got to ask . I frequently hear a certain "sound" in a lot of the music I like that I cant seem to reproduce (admittedly I am a rank beginer). I dont hear it in any of the presets of the synths I have (z3ta+,virus mod, Rapture and the other Sonar synths). It may be that I just dont have an ear for this stuff. At any rate the link that follows illustrates this sound. Can anyone enlighten me as to the origins of the sound or possible ways to reproduce it ? The link takes you to a pretty funny youtube video, but I'm serious about the sound. Hopefully you will also get a laugh out of it.

It is HERE

    Conan the Ravairian?

What was even funnier was this old Weird Al Yankovic movie "UHF" which had a sketch called Conan the Librarian.

That sounds like a Roland TB-303 lead synth. You probably could use a saw type lead with a filter like effect.

The TB-303 also has a step sequencer so the robotic melody lines has a lot to do with its sound as well.

I think I vaugely remember Conan the Librarian. I thought it might be a 303--a favorite of rave music. I might have to drag out my old copy of Rebirth. I've tried some saw waves in Virus zt3a+ with the filter cutoff+resonance, but it either sounds too musical or like the old telegraph machines.

I can't vouch for how good they are, but you might want to try downloading some of these and load them up in Rapture.

It's a saw wav in a synth (or a preset in some cheap synth, or, most likely just a straight keyboard). I'm sure you can replucate it in dimension with some experimenting with loading saw wavs into presets then tweaking, and maybe adding some light distortion effect on the track. I'm sure you can do it in Rapture too, I say dimension, because it has more presets, and more wavs to work with. But IMO, it sounds cheap and cheezy. Actually almost sounds like a kiddy Casino with some reverb.

I'm slowly working my way towards that. I found the song and downloaded it, put some in Sound Forge, grabbed some samples (one wave, two waves, etc) and put them into Rapture and am playing with that now. Its all for fun anyways. Really gets me poking through the innards of these programs.

    Thanks,
