I still have a shoebox full of floppies with Cakewalk 1.0 projects on them. I'll bet I could still load them into SONAR. Problem is, I no longer have a floppy drive.

Floppy drives that plug into a USB port are only $10-15.  I have one and it works pretty well when I occasionally need it.

I Thought those were available for the 3 ½ floppies and not the 8” variety.

According to the Wiki page:

8-inch and non-standard diskettes are rare or non-existent, and those formats must usually be handled by old equipment

It looks like Steve will have to go out and get his hands on some old hardware if he ever wants that 8” floppy read again.

I don't think 8" floppies have been used since the late 70's, but 5.25" floppies were what the original Cakewalk came on.

In all seriousness, I was doing NMR spectroscopy in the mid-80's on a state of the art 300 MHz machine and it used 8" floppies.

 Started with Voyetra.

That was my most used after I discarded a system that had a dongle.

I started with TT @ PA4, purchased every upgrade (sans SONAR 2 for some reason) but did not get serious with SONAR until 6/7. Up until that time I had used Voyetra and ADATs fairly satisfactorily.

I have a floppy drive on my i7 rig (as well as my quad core). I have a USB floppy drive for the laptop (if needed).

Started with CWPA 6.0, moved to 9.0, jumped to Sonar 5.0 and then Sonar 8 all on CD (it is where I sit now).

My CWPA manual has a code for 5.0 handwritten in it (by me) so, I am guessing that when I bought it, Cake was just transitioning to 6.0 and I may have had a 5.0 disc (but maybe not).

Also, hand written on the 1st page is the tech support phone number ... and to this day, I can still recall the conversations that I had with Cake's tech support.  Very specifically, a tech support person commented on how calm I was remaining and that most people in my situation (which apparently was quite common and had to do with deleted files) called to scream.

In all honesty, I would prefer to NOT see Steve's 8" floppy ... I'll just take his word for it.

Bapu....

That's quite a list I must say.

For me....I started with Cakewalk Home 3.0 which I'm thinking was 1994. (not DOS)
I had 3.0/4.5-5.0/6.0/7.0/8.0/9.0/Sonar 1.0/Sonar 3.0/Sonar 5.0PE/X2PE and now on X3PE.
I recycled most of those disks but I did keep ProSuite 9.0 for the MP3 encoder enabler. (not that it is needed now)
I also kept Sonar 3.0PE/5.0PE because I still have the manuals along with Sonar Power 5.0.

Now they are all archaic goodies from the Pleistocene Epoch.

Carry on...a good day to all.

I think the first time I saw Calkwalk, she was bundled with my first Soundblaster Live card. I think there was another program in there called Vegas or something. Anyway, I still have in my possession a working Windows 98 machine. I just today retired my XP work machine. My Music rig is Win 7. My new work system is Win 8.1. I installed VirtualBox and it also has a virtual Win 98 and XP in it. (I needed the XP for work programs but only have an XP Upgrade disc. So I had to install Win 98.) My real Win 98 computer has a copy of Pro Tools - Free for Windows. LOL I never used it but it loads. Ah, memories...

I started with Sonar 2 XL (I think they called it XL) and am still trying to figure it out... I'm sure I just need more plugins. I skipped S8 and 8.5, I was distracted by another hobby at the time. I've paid al my other Cake dues!

I think I've seen the old DOS program on a friend's PC.  It was on an old amber CRT.  It's hard to imagine trying to us some of that old hardware today.

What's crazier?  That I still have the booklets and the floppies or that I knew exactly where they were?  (I am not a pack rat.  Just a collector.  Plus, I still have a Win 98 machine.)

Ha...I think I had Voyetra as far back as '94 or so IIRC.
Little purple or magenta colored square boxes being midi measures that would blink when playing.
Back then, I had 2 R/R decks (Teac 3440S & Fostex Model 80), a Roland JV-30 (still my controller) and Voyetra.
What could be better....I was in creative heaven. :)

Cool pic of the floppies and manual.
My my....things have changed.
A great day to all.

Not quite. Shambler is messing with you. "Cakewalk" on the Atari was a video game, not a DAW.

Well, actually neither was Cakewalk 1.0 for DOS. It was a MIDI sequencer, not a DAW.

OK,

760K & 1.4K = These are probably MIDI files and a $5.00 USB Drive is the Fix.  I tested this and it's no problem.

btw - (going waybac here) you know they make a USB disk emulator for the Ensoniq Mirage!  Its not your average IBM floppy.

Now how about those funky cat crys I sampled and put into my 26 minute pre-house jam?  It's a 16bit .CWB file.
I get this error...
"Could not open file.  The file may be damaged [it works in my cats computer (don't go there, its a long story) , an XP with SONAR 4] or incompatible with this version of SONAR.  You may attempt to recover this file in safe mode...  [never worked]"
