I have a neighbor with a Harley and when he opens it up there is no doubt that he rides a loud machine.  But when he comes into the neighborhood he has the discipline to keep his noise to a minimum.  You know he just rode by, but the noise is in no way objectionable.

The ice cream truck driver on the other hand can destroy a nice quiet evening in my backyard.  I have to listen to "Row, Row, Row You Boat" and similar songs repeatedly until I want to vomit.  You can hear him drive up and down every single street in the subdivision for a half hour or more.  Should be outlawed.  Parents should buy ice cream at the store instead of triple-priced crap from this rolling nuisance.

Don't get me started about the brain dead ****s with the boom-boom car stereos...

Well said Mark.

Changing mufflers seems to make folks automatically think loud.
Anybody that's ever been around a muscle car can relate to that low rumble that is
a wonderful sound. Not loud but the big 3" pipe's and muffler choice change the pitch.
Rather than a tinny high pitch sound that so many of the bikes have ( sounds very close to a rattle to me)
and what is stock now on Harleys I immediately changed mine to have that nice low tone.

I'm older now and I "style" ride. I don't rap my bike and when my wife and I ride through neighborhoods
people wave. There are a lot of bikers here and we support many causes and the people that don't ride
are always supporting the biker functions and enjoy participating.
There are drag strips and dirt courses. Mud boggin' , four wheeler rides...and most any thing folks like to enjoy.
And for the most part you never see "crazy" stuff going down.

I am a considerate rider and many of the things mentioned in this thread I understand and share the irritation
but it's not something that's experienced much around here.

Whether or not a riders prefers legal loud or a quiet machine, it's nice to have the choice so a rider can
ride feeling like their choice is the right one.
So if you ride and prefer a quiet bike...great and I hope it keeps you safe.

It sure seems by some of the complaints I've read here that the laws in the areas are not being enforced or they
sure are relaxed laws. It also seems like a great place for rock groups. Loud Harleys and rock and roll.....I remember
when I loved it.....sure ain't gonna **** now even though I've changed.

Ride on!

I was a little hesitant to post this, however since I had already opened the proverbial can of worms and said I would make another post here it is.

Undoubtedly a subject like this will draw some flak but we are all mature here (well some of us are) ....

Yes I think that this whole thing falls into the same category as the loud subwoofers and the ice cream trucks. Whenever someone either knowingly or unknowingly becomes a pain in the arse category I guess.....Usually its knowingly and uncaringly IMO.

Sometimes being human, certain things do get me going but not to any great degree, and I'm not a constant complainer. I just made an observation out loud on the CH. I am glad to see I am not alone on some of of the ideas. I have about 10 more but I don't want to start WW3 lol.

While on the subject though I agree with what someone else said that loud pipes might help save a life but its not really likely because the same type of person who plays music in the car or is glued to a cell phone or putting on makeup(that ain't me)  will not look twice before pulling out.

Fact- Riding a motorcycle puts you at risk no matter what. Your chances of being seen are less and you should always drive defensively.

Coming back from the Jersey shore a few weeks ago two women lost their lives. We were coming the other way and had to be detoured. When they turned us around all I could see were bodies under white sheets. Apparently a group of bikes were coming around a blind curve and someone was too far over the line resulting in a collision with a truck coming the other way. This is purely a hypothetical guess on my part- I think that MAYBE the bikers were doing what I always see them do when they ride in packs and hanging either right on or over the yellow divider line. I admit it could have also been the fault of the truck being too far over or a combination of the two...I'll probably never know. A biker can do everything right and still get hit.

When I was just a boy, my father had a very serious motorcycle accident. It put him in the hospital for three months and they had to operate on his brain removing three blood clots. They didn't expect him to live but he did. At the time helments were the law. His helment was broken into about 10 pieces.

Motorcycle owners.yeah its a free country, you don'y have to wear a helment but if you don't want scramled eggs for brains I strongly suggest it.

I have also broken bones on motorcycles and other stuff I won't go into here....suffice it to say I am a little biased about what can happen on a bike already let along those guys who think they are tough with loud pipes.

Time lends perspective...

Nothing wrong with changing ones mind with the benefit of increased knowledge and greater experience.

There's plenty of stuff I used to love and now **** about.

With hindsight I feel grateful to be in that position.

How right you are sir. I don't know how I made it this far....and can still function.
I did try ****ing....no one listened.

I have noticed that on-line one does read many statements that tag bikers....such as "bad-ass".
"they think they're _____this or that" ( fill in with whatever)
The only thing I know for sure about every biker I've ever met was they loved to ride and did it for that
reason alone. I'm not sure really why people want to label them and assume all the things they do.
It's really no different than "people in the music industry are nothing but drug heads and love to show off"....
geeze I sure have my doubts about humanity.

The truth be known......I think aliens that used most all of their brain power had to do something with the population
that was functioning on a small percentage...they planted them here. edit(on Earth) With all the indications I've seen, we are the ****ed
and handicapped descendants of an alien race. ( while I duck and run for cover)

That certainly best explains the course of my own life...

I ended up selling my bike some years ago because of too many close call that were my own reckless fault. The last two incidents I had sealed it for me. I out ran a State cop and had it up just shy of 120mph when the old handle bar shimmy happened. Those of you who've had the pleasure of experiencing that know full well the instant shot of fear that goes through you... it'll tickle a turd loose for damn sure. A few weeks after that I came into a corner way too fast, Hunter S. Thompson style(read the Hell's Angels biography)and was right on the edge where the blacktop meets the sand. That was enough for me.. I've lost both a cousin and a good friend to bike accidents. I didn't want to join them so I sold it. Had a lot of fun though while it lasted.
