Three monitor set up
I recently got a 55" HDMI LED television and I discovered that I really like using it as a computer monitor. My current video card has three outputs but can only output to two monitors at a time. I'd really like to bring both of my 22" wide screen monitors back into play. I currently have an ATI Radeon HD 4600 series double head card installed on an ASUS M478 PLUS motherboard. I would like to stay with the ATI Radeon series cards if possible. I'm trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. Some people are saying that they have to buy an adapter to do three monitors simultaneously. Can someone give me some advice? All I need to know is what to order to get me where I want to be.

A second graphics card is all you need, assuming that you have a spare PCIe-x16 slot.

That's another issue that I failed to mention. I don't have any more PCIe slots.

Hi Dave, Get an HD7750 (passive cooled, triple-head video card). You can run three monitors off that unit. If you need a format converter (depends on the inputs offered by your monitors), you'll need an "active" converter to make use of all three ports.

I agree... In my rebuild that is the card I decided on... fastest PASSIVE card... totally quiet, but you do need the active converter unless one of your monitors has display port... Right now I'm using two monitors but also want to add a third. Would love yours!!!

The one thing that I would like to add for anyone who stumbles across this thread is that the video card takes up two spaces because of the heat sink. I had to move some things around in order to make room for those fins. Luckily I had the extra ADAT I/O connections for my RME HDSP soundcard in that space so I moved it to make room for the fins.

Yeah I saw that too Cliff. Dave, None of my PCIe slots are being used so I'm good there. Mike

That's a strange image in my head now. Thanks Dave! That setup looks nice, how far away is that 55"? I use a HTPC in my living room to a 55" 1080P LCD and find high res stuff a little small from across the room.

Yes, it's a 55 in. I don't use the high res on that screen. The text look grainy so I use a lesser setting. If I only had one 55" screen, it wouldn't be workable for me. It's the combination of three screens that makes it nice. As you can see from my photo, SONAR is not my main DAW at this time. I've had SONAR X3 up for a quick look and undocking the windows and placing them on different monitors would be very nice.

That's a real nice setup Dave! Very inviting! I did something similar. I have 2 dual monitors in front of me at my work station, and a 37" HDTV that doubles as a 3rd monitor. I use it for dragging some VSTs & other things out of the way to, [but still visible], and I additionally use it to drag my main tracking window over to, when sitting at the piano which is right next to it, as I cannot see the 2 other monitors from there very well. I found that an additional graphics card was the way to go too, but it also required 2 spaces for the heat-sink as well. Having an ASUS MoBo, I decided to go for an ASUS GT 550 [or something like that - memory challenge from a year ago] for about $79. Well worth the money. Looks like you're all set to go there! +1

Wow that is one nice setup there Dave! I talked to Scott (ADK) about a three monitor setup with a Dell 30" in the middle (2560x1600 resolution) then I could take my two existing 21.3" SyncMasters and turn them portrait to add 1200x1600 res. wings on each side (haven't done it yet). I thought that would be about as good as it gets, but you've already gone beyond that! Great job!
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!
